PERMA-PREVIEWS AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS By Gennifer Choldenko 006697 $16.90 G.P. Putnam’s Sons Reading Level: 3.5 Interest Level: 5-9 Classification: Fiction Every twelve year old boy wants to live on Alcatraz Island, the most famous prison in 1935. That’s where Moose Flanagan (Alcatraz Island This unique and fascinating Boy) finds himself, because his dad has accepted a job as a prison guard and an electrician. This story will entertain and capti- move allows his autistic older sister, Natalie, to vate middle school readers attend Esther P. Marinoff School in San Francisco. everywhere. Thus begins Moose Flanagan’s life on “a twelve- acre rock covered with cement, topped with bird turd and surrounded by water.” Moose meets several children living on the island, who are ruled by Piper, the warden’s daughter. Piper, a pretty little schemer, contrives a plan to charge a nickel to every student in their school who wants their shirts laundered by the infamous Al Capone. Of course, they are caught by the war- den and are punished, just like real criminals! We watch Moose, the responsible one, some- times grudgingly but always with love, take care of his sister Natalie and learn that some rules are meant to be broken. The heartwarming ending will delight readers as Moose understands: “When you love someone, you have to try things even if they don’t make sense to anyone else.” This unique and fascinating story will entertain and captivate middle school readers everywhere. Readers will appreciate the author’s extensive notes about life on Alcatraz during the 1930’s. Reviewed by Theresa Sidwell COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT LIBRARIAN 1 P. Finally, the sisters were saved from the grating wails by a young girl name Nellie. She’d had some experience with babies, as she had two dozen brothers and sisters, and she knew just what to do. She got the sisters’ attention and suggested they let her lend a hand, but only after their gigantic efforts to soothe the child failed did she really take over. Nellie cuddled, fed and cleaned the baby, and with that, he fell sound asleep. The sisters had learned from the small girl that small, everyday actions created all the com- fort that Lil Fella needed, and from that time on, they were able to express their love for him in less grandiose ways, knowing that was all he really wanted anyway. 2 .
