  • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 An historical biography: 1969-2004 by Omékongo Dibinga Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2015 Advisory Committee: Professor Barbara Finkelstein, Chair Professor Steve Klees Professor Robert Croninger Professor Derrick Alridge Professor Hoda Mahmoudi © Copyright by Omékongo Dibinga 2015 Acknowledgments I would first like to thank God for making life possible and bringing me to this point in my life.

PROLOGUE Sidelines of chairs neatly divide the center field and a large stage stands erect. At its center, there is a stately podium flanked by disciplined men wearing the militaristic suits of the Fruit of Islam, a visible security squad. This is Ford Field, usually known for housing the Detroit Lions football team, but on this occasion it plays host to a different gathering and sentiment. The seats are mostly full, both on the floor and in the stands, but if you look closely, you’ll find that this audience isn’t the standard sporting fare: the men are in smart suits, the women dress equally so, in long white dresses, gloves, and headscarves.

Genre as Bait: Using Pop Soundtrack as Narrative Counterpoint or Complement By: Margaret Dudasik May 15, 2013 BA Film & Screen Studies/ BFA Musical Theatre Dr. Ruth Johnston Film & Screen Studies, Dyson College of Arts and Sciences 1 Abstract There is much argument against using pre-existing music in film, Ian Garwood noting three potential problems with the pop song: obtrusiveness, cultural relevance, and distance from the narrative (103-106). It is believed that lyrics and cultural connotations can distract from the action, but it is my belief that these elements only aid narrative. By examining the cinematic functions of the soundtracks of O Brother Where Are Thou? (2000) and Marie Antoinette (2006), I will argue that using pre-existing music in film is actually more effective than a score composed specifically for a film. Film theorist Claudia Gorbman notes that film scores have “temporal, spatial, dramatic, structural, denotative, [and] connotative” abilities” (22), and it is my belief that pop music is just as economical in forming character, conveying setting, and furthering plot.

  • “Ready to Die” 1994–2017 MA CCC CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS
“Ready To Die” 1994–2017 MA CCC CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS 1 F.Sargentone march 2017 ed: /2 2 READY TO BE The Anti-Cinematographic eye Writing an introduction to this publication has probably been one of the most difficult things I have ever done in the recent years. I thought it could have been easy to talk about one of the most influential records of the whole music history. It turned out that this loose, A5 –sized, home printed book- let is the only existing monographic work on Notorius B.I.G.’s Ready To Die. By stating this at the beginning of the sup- posed dissertation, I want to make sure that the reader could read these lines as the raw output of a deep, although instinc- tive, research on one of the milestones of hip-hop cultural history. The research pro- cess, of which this booklet testifies the ma- terial result, has been spontaneous, in the sense that did not started as a canonical research question, but instead it happened a posteriori, being the record a very famil- iar matter for me since ages. As you will see, the lyrics of the songs contained within Ready To Die are formal- ly printed –without any additional editing– from RapGenius, a world famous website collecting lyrics and anecdotes of hip-hop songs from users. The oral history com- ponent of this platform is an essential el- ement shared with early hip-hop culture, in which realities existed and formalised themselves only via word of mouth or so- cio-cultural affinity with the hip-hop phe- nomenon.

During the process, I faced numerous challenges from the narrowing of content and focus on the subject at hand, to seemingly unjust legal and administrative circumstances. Dr. Jonathan Adams, whose gracious support, interest, and tutelage, and knowledge in the fields of both music and communications studies, are greatly appreciated. Dr. Gary Heald encouraged me to complete my thesis as the foundation for future doctoral studies, and dissertation research.

  • Notorious BIG Tax Bill
Robert W. Wood THE TAX LAWYER May. 7 2012 — 11:36 pm Notorious B.I.G. Tax Bill Rapper The Notorious B.I.G. was gunned down in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997. Born Christopher George Latore Wallace, he was also known as Biggie Smalls, Big Poppa, and The Black Frank White. His wife Faith Evans, has herself had a colorful career and her own successes. But 15 years after B.I.G.’s death, the California Franchise Tax Board has evidently had enough of Born Again (The Notorious B.I.G. album) nonpayment of taxes. Not his, hers. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) California’s answer to the IRS is the Franchise Tax Board. See Notes From California’s Tax Trenches. It filed a tax lien claiming the former Mrs. B.I.G. failed to pay her taxes to the Golden State for 2008, 2009 and 2010. The total due?$60,357.17. See Singer Faith Evans: The Government Has No Faith In Her Ability To Pay Taxes. If Evans doesn’t cough up the cash soon, the state could try to levy on her assets like homes, cars and bank accounts to collect. Tax bills often seem to slip through the cracks for celebs. Take Lindsay Lohan, who missed bills leading to a $94,000 tax lien. See In Taxes, Lindsay Lohan Is No Kim Kardashian. Faithfully (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Liens can be filed by mistake, but it doesn’t happen too often. Most state and federal tax lien procedures are similar. The IRS can file a Notice of Federal Tax Lien only after: IRS assesses the liability; IRS sends a Notice and Demand for Payment saying how much you owe; and You fail to fully pay within 10 days.
