1973 As a symbol of the St. Lucia Congress where petroglyphs of the Antilles were discussed, we have used on the front cover a drawing of one of the petro­ glyphs at Layou on St. Vincent (see Mattioni page 29). A photographic repre­ sentation of the same petroglyph appears on page 40 (Olsen Fig. 1) . It is be­ lieved by some to represent Yocahu, the Arawak male god and giver of manioc. Proceedings of the

The Fourth International Congress for the Study of the pre-Columbian Cultures of the Lesser Antilles was held in St. Lucia, W.I. , July 26-30, 1971, under the auspices of the St. Lucia Archaeological and Historical Society. Eric M. Branford, Secretary for Archaeology of the Society, was local president and Ripley P. Bullen, program chairman.

The program, list of delegates, and report of the business meeting will be found elsewhere in this volume. All the papers presented at the Congress are reproduced here except for two for which texts are not available. Two additional short papers have been added to complete the coverage of the sessions on petroglyphs. As previously, papers are published in the language in which they were presented. PROGRAM
