Schiffman Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Yeshiva University How many times have you been in a shul on the second day of Shavuot and noticed confusion at the beginning of the haftarah? Either the person called up to maftir suddenly finds out that after the first verse of the haftarah he is to recite an Aramaic text that he may never have seen before and/or the melody of which he does not know, or if the maftir does indeed know what he is doing, the congregation is flustered when he begins to chant the unfamiliar text that is often not in their Siddurim. This situation results from a combination of historical tendencies but gives us the opportunity to learn about, and be inspired by, a very beautiful poem that is part of our yom tov Machzor. In ancient times, after Hebrew gradually gave way to other languages as the spoken language of the Jewish people, the custom of translating the Bible into the vernacular became common. Already in Hellenistic times, in the 3rd century BCE, the process of translating the Bible into Greek began, leading to the creation of the Septuagint. The Dead Sea Scrolls preserve not only fragments of Greek translations of parts of the Bible, but also a fragment of a Targum (an Aramaic translation) of Vayikra as well as large parts of a Targum to Job. The Mishnah (Megillah 4:4) discusses the custom of translating Torah and Haftarah readings into Aramaic, the former verse by verse and the latter in groups of three verses.

    Dear Youth Directors, Youth chairs, and Youth Leaders, NCYI is excited to continue our very successful Parsha Nation Guides. I hope you’re enjoying and learning from Parsha Nation as much as we are. Putting together Parsha Nation every week is indeed no easy task. It takes a lot of time and effort to ensure that each section, as well as each age group, receives the attention and dedication it deserves. We inspire and mold future leaders. The youth leaders of Young Israel have the distinct honor and privilege to teach and develop the youth of Young Israel. Children today are constantly looking for role models and inspirations to latch on to and learn from. Whether it is actual sit down learning sessions, exciting Parsha trivia games, or even just walking down the hall to the Kiddush room, our youth look to us and watch our every move. It’s not always about the things we say, it’s about the things we do. Our children hear and see everything we do whether we realize it or not. This year we are taking our Youth Services to new heights as we introduce our Leadership Training Shabbaton. This engaging, interactive shabbaton will give youth leader’s hands on experience and practical solutions to effectively guide your youth department. Informal education is key. What the summer shows us as educators is that informal education can deliver better results and help increase our youth’s connection to Hashem. More and more shuls are revamping their youth program to give their children a better connection to shul and to Hashem.

    Magnified and Sanctified – the music of Jewish Prayer June 2015 Leeds University Full Report Magnified and Sanctified: The Music of Jewish Prayer International Conference held at Leeds University, 16-19 June 2015 A Report by Dr Malcolm Miller and Dr Benjamin Wolf Pictured: Torah Mantle, Amsterdam c 1675© Victoria and Albert Museum, London Introduction and Overview A historically significant and ground-breaking event in the field of music and musicology, held at Leeds University in June 2015, set a benchmark in the field and a stimulus for rich avenues of research. Entitled Magnified and Sanctified: The Music of Jewish Prayer, the conference was the first ever International Conference on Jewish Liturgical Music in the UK , which, during the week of 16-19 June 2015, attracted an international array of leading scholars and musicians from Europe, Australia, USA and Israel to share cutting-edge research on all aspects of synagogue music past and present. The stimulating and diverse program featured an array of keynote lectures, scholarly papers, panel discussions and musical performances, and was followed by the 10th Annual European Cantors Convention weekend. The conference, presented by the European Cantor’s Association and the music department of Leeds University, was one of the inaugural events in the three-year international project ‘Performing the Jewish Archive’ (2015-2018) which has seen several major conferences and festivals across the world. Spearheaded by Dr Stephen Muir, Senior Lecturer at Leeds and Conference Director, the project has given rise to revivals of and research into much music lost during the period of the Holocaust and Jewish migrations in the 20th century.

    1 In the Absence of Ritual Customs of the Holiday of Shavuot Simcha Fishbane Touro College Shavuot and Rosh Hodesh Along with Passover and Sukkot, the holiday of Shavuot (“Weeks”) is one of the three pilgrimage festivals, the times when Jews would travel to the Temple in Jerusalem. In Scripture, Shavuot is identified by different names in various contexts. In Exodus 23:16, the holiday is referred to as the Holiday or Feast of the Harvest (Hag Ha‐Katzir): “And the Feast of the Harvest, the first fruits of your labors which you have sown in the field, and the Feast of Ingathering, which is at the end of the year.”1 The holiday falls in May–June, when the wheat begins to ripen in the land of Israel. It is from this wheat that the Bible commands that the “two loaves” (shetei ha‐lehem) be baked and brought to the Temple as an offering. This ritual then permitted the eating of the new season’s crops. The holiday is referred to as the Festival of Weeks (Shavuot) in Exodus 34:22: “Seven weeks shall you count unto you, unto the Lord your God, with a tribute of a freewill offering of your hand, which you shall give, according as the Lord your God has blessed you.”2 Seven weeks – forty nine days – are counted beginning with the sacrifice of the omer offering on Passover; this “Sefirat Ha‐Omer” culminated with the offering of the new fruits in the Temple on Shavuot. SHAVUOT (PENTECOST) DEREK LEMAN Shavuot Laws and Traditions Scripture #1: Shows the beginning point of the 50-day count, Leviticus 23:10-11. This is the day of offering Barley Firstfruits during Passover. In the time of the rabbis, and still today, there has been controversy over what “day after the Sabbath” means. Is it the day after the weekly Sabbath (and thus always Sunday) or the day after the Passover Yom Tov (and thus always the second day of Passover). Scripture #2: The basic regulations for Shavuot, Leviticus 23:15-21. Count 49 days and on the 50th, it is Shavuot. This is the Firstfruits for wheat. Scripture #3: Shavuot as one of the three pilgrim feasts, Deuteronomy 16:16. Tradition #1: Shavuot is the day God gave the commandments from Sinai. This is based on Exodus 19:1 and following. The third month here means the third month of the year, Sivan.

Shavuot, also known as the “Feast of Weeks” or “Festival of First Fruits”, is a two-day Jewish holiday commemorating the revelation of the Torah to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai. The holiday takes place 50 days after the start of Passover and falls on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan. Shavuot is one of the three biblically based pilgrimage holidays in Jewish calendar. The holiday originally began as an agricultural festival to celebrate the beginning of harvest but has evolved to also commemorate the giving of the Torah. In 2021, Shavuot will begin on the evening of May 16 and end on the evening of May 18. How is it observed? Shavuot, meaning “weeks”, celebrates the completion of the seven-week harvest period between Passover and Shavuot. The holiday is an opportunity for Jewish followers to honour God’s gifts and reaccept the Torah. One the first day of Shavuot, special morning services take place in local synagogues where followers recite key religious texts including a liturgical poem called “Akdamut,” the Book of Ruth and the Ten Commandments. Many in the Jewish community will study the Torah and other Jewish texts all night in a practice called “Tikkun Leyl Shavuot” to symbolically prepare for receiving of the Torah. On the second day of Shavuot, a special Yizkor prayer is recited in honour of the departed. Shavuot is commemorated by abstaining from work, reciting Shavuot prayers, enjoying traditional meals, and attending special synagogue services. During Shavuot celebrations, many families prepare traditional holiday meals that center around dairy, as there are many symbolic connections between milk and the receiving of the Torah.

    Shavuot Without Shul: A Guide Erev Shavuot, Thursday, May 28 • Make an Eiruv Tavshilin. Set aside a cooked food that will not be eaten before Shabbat, and a baked food (the baked food is not absolutely essential), and state “by this Eiruv it is permissible for us to cook and bake and do all our needs on Yom Tov for Shabbat.” • It is customary to decorate one’s home with plants and flowers. • One should make an effort to daven Mincha before plag ha-mincha (6:45pm). • Candles should be lit at 8:01pm. Many women have the custom to recite shehecheyanu immediately after lighting candles (note: women who will be reciting Kiddush themselves may not recite shehecheyanu at candle lighting. If they said it accidentally at candle lighting, they may not say it in Kiddush). If candles are not lit before Yom Tov begins, they may be lit afterwards from an existing flame. • On the first evening of Shavuot, it is customary to recite Kiddush and begin the meal after nightfall (8:58pm). Our minhag is that this applies to making Kiddush only; in shul, we do not wait until nightfall to daven Maariv. When davening at home, however, it is advisable (but not required) simply to daven Maariv after nightfall and make Kiddush immediately thereafter. • Those who are ill or find it very difficult to eat late may light candles, daven Maariv, and make Kiddush after 7:00pm. If possible, one should wait until after sunset (~8:20pm) to recite Kiddush. One must remember to repeat the Shema after 8:58pm.
