Few practitioners in public health have doctoral-level degrees, and few doctoral programs focus on the development of leadership skills specific to the public health arena. The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree provides comprehensive leadership training in all areas of public health, exposing students to the latest in research, practice, and theory. The DrPH offered by the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago is tailored to mid-career public health professionals who want to expand their knowledge and practice of public health. With the flexibility to learn online from anywhere around the world, students in the DrPH Program in Leadership will join a stimulating community of peers and renowned faculty en route to an outstanding educational experience. Those who earn the DrPH from UIC will possess the skills to lead practice-based research, influence public health policy, effect change in health systems and institutions, and assume key roles in the public health community at local, national, and international levels. Admission Requirements To qualify for the DrPH program, students must hold a master’s degree from an accredited school of public health or a master’s degree in a related field. They must also have three or more years of full-time, paid, professional experience in public health in a leadership position (or in mid to senior level management positions that demonstrate evidence of leadership potential). The GRE is not required. Applicants who have taken the GRE or other aptitude tests within the past five years may elect to submit their scores. This may be especially helpful for applicants whose academic records do not reflect their current academic potential and accomplishments. Applicants are expected to provide a personal statement. Applicants should make a clear and compelling but succinct case as to their motivations for pursuing the DrPH degree and their readiness to begin and complete the program. Points covered should include reasons for applying, how the DrPH degree would be used, how it fits in the trajectory of professional and leadership development, along with life adjustments and financial preparations the applicant will make to successfully complete the program. Degree Requirements The DrPH curriculum includes 28 semester hours (SH) of core requirements, 8 SH of a focus area, attendance at the annual summer institute, and a thesis project (28 SH). Up to 32 SH of credit may be granted for those already holding an MPH or related degree.
