The abundance and distribution of P. semifasciata at early stages indicate the existence of at least three offshore reproductive grounds between 42−43°S, 43−44°S, and 44−45°S, and a delayed spawning pulse in the southern stocks. Terminology for morphometrics followed Neira et al. (1998). Additionally, head depth (HD) was defined as the maximum depth of the head. Preserved ×100 larvae were measured to the nearest 0.1 mm with an /BL ocular micrometer fitted to a dissecting microscope, HL and their pigmentation pattern was recorded. Possible shrinkage was not considered in the measurements. Whenever possible, the number of vertebrae and num- bers of dorsal, anal, caudal, pectoral, and pelvic fin rays were recorded. In addition, 14 larvae from 3.4 to 11.7 mm BL were cleared and stained following the methods of Potthoff (1984) and Taylor and Van Dyke (1985), and then examined for meristics and osteological features.

A survey of fishes associated with Hawaiian deep-water Halimeda kanaloana (Bryopsidales: Halimedaceae) and Avrainvillea sp. (Bryopsidales: Udoteaceae) meadows Ross C. Langston1 and Heather L. Spalding2 1 Department of Natural Sciences, University of Hawai`i- Windward Community College, Kane`ohe,¯ HI, USA 2 Department of Botany, University of Hawai`i at Manoa,¯ Honolulu, HI, USA ABSTRACT The invasive macroalgal species Avrainvillea sp. and native species Halimeda kanaloana form expansive meadows that extend to depths of 80 m or more in the waters off of O`ahu and Maui, respectively. Despite their wide depth distribution, comparatively little is known about the biota associated with these macroalgal species. Our primary goals were to provide baseline information on the fish fauna associated with these deep-water macroalgal meadows and to compare the abundance and diversity of fishes between the meadow interior and sandy perimeters. Because both species form structurally complex three-dimensional canopies, we hypothesized that they would support a greater abundance and diversity of fishes when compared to surrounding sandy areas. We surveyed the fish fauna associated with these meadows using visual surveys and collections made with clove-oil anesthetic. Using these techniques, we recorded a total of 49 species from 25 families for H. kanaloana meadows and surrounding sandy areas, and 28 species from 19 families for Avrainvillea sp. habitats. Percent endemism was 28.6% and 10.7%, respectively. Wrasses (Family Labridae) were the most speciose taxon in both habitats (11 and six species, respectively), followed by gobies for H. kanaloana (six Submitted 18 November 2016 species). The wrasse Oxycheilinus bimaculatus and cardinalfish Apogonichthys perdix Accepted 13 April 2017 were the most frequently-occurring species within the H.

Corresponding author, e-mail: [email protected] Morphological development of larval Prolatilus jugularis from Bahia Independencia, Pisco, Peru is described. Two hundred and thirty-two specimens were collected with plankton nets in 2000; a develop- mental series of 40 individuals (2.5^25.9 mm: recently hatched through transformation) was assembled using morphological features and pigmentation. Prolatilus jugularis hatches at approximately 2.5 mm, noto- chord £exion begins at *5.7 mm and ends at *6.9 mm, and transformation begins at an unknown size between 14.2^20.3 mm (probably near 20 mm). Diagnostic features of the larvae include a robust body with large head bearing small preopercular spines that begin to form by late pre£exion stage; preanal length just under half of body length early in the pre£exion stage increasing to near two-thirds of body length in the post£exion stage; and pigmentation primarily on the snout, opercular region, dorsally on the head and gut, laterally above the hindgut, and on the ventral margin of the tail through early £exion stage. A broad mid-lateral stripe begins to form on the trunk and tail late in the £exion stage and dorsal pigmenta- tion forms on the trunk and tail in the post£exion stage.

ORCID-iD: http://orcid.org/0000-0002-5199-5103 Summary: Two species of sandperch (Pinguipedidae: Perciformes), Prolatilus jugularis and Pinguipes chilensis, inhabit the coastal waters of the South Pacific. Both species have pelagic larvae with similar morphology, but their diet preferences are unknown. Diet composition, feeding success, trophic niche breadth and dietary overlap were described during larval stages for both species. In the austral spring, larval P. jugularis (3.83-10.80 mm standard length [SL]) and P. chilensis (3.49-7.71 mm SL) during their first month of life had a high feeding incidence (>70%) and fed mostly on copepod nauplii (>80% IRI), Rhincalanus nasutus metanauplii and Paracalanus indicus copepodites. The number of prey ingested was low (mean: 4-5 prey per gut) and independent of larval size; total prey volume and maximum prey width increased as larvae grew. Mouth opening and ingested prey were greater in larval P. jugularis than in P. chilensis, leading to significant differences in prey composition among larval species, in terms of prey number and volume.

  • A New Sandperch, Parapercis Maritzi (Teleostei: Pinguipedidae), from South Africa
    S. Afr. I. Zool. 1992,27(4) 151 A new sandperch, Parapercis maritzi (Teleostei: Pinguipedidae), from South Africa M. E. Anderson J.L.B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology, Private Bag 1015, Grahamstown, 6140 Republic of South Africa R~c~ived 15 January 1992; acc~pt~d 14 April 1992 A new species of sandperch, Parapsrcis mantz;, is described from 12 specimens from the outer shelf off Transkei and Natal. The species differs from all other sandperches in its oolouration, particulars of its dentition, and meristics of its axial skeleton and squamation. It is one of the deep-water sand perches, and is found on open sandy-rubble bottoms of the outer sheH. 'n Nuwe spesie van die sandspiering, Parapercis maritzi, word van 12 eksemplare vanaf die buitenste plat aan die kus van Transkei en Natal beskryf. Die spesie verskil van al die ander sandspierings deur sy kleur, eienskappe van die tandformasie, en die meristieke van die aksiale geraamte en skubbe. Dit is een van die diepwater-sandspieringsen word gevind op die cop sanderige steenslagbodem van die buitenste plat. The sandperches of the genus Parapercis are a speciose fm rays. The last dorsal and anal rays, divided through their group of bottom fIShes occupying sandy or sand-rubble bases, were counted as one. Vertebral counts include the areas in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific urostyle. Measurements were taken with dial calipers and re region. These habitats are usually near reefs, but also occur corded to the nearest 0,1 mm. Proportions of body dimen in bays and lagoons and offshore to depths not exceeding sions were calculated as a percentage of standard length 400 m.
