Breaking the Silence Thursday, 19 July 2012 15:48 - Last Updated Thursday, 19 July 2012 16:32 Breaking The Silence Thursday, 19 July 2012 15:48 - Last Updated Thursday, 19 July 2012 16:32 On Saturday, the veteran footballers of Beara GAA take to the pitch again as they bring a subject close to our hearts close to the light. PEARSE O’Neill, Michael Shields, Noel O’Leary, Graham Canty, Donncha O’Connor, Paul Kerrigan, Colm O’Neill, Alan Quirke and Patrick Kelly are just some of the Cork players who have helped to promote the charity Breaking The Silence. Unfortunately, the lads will not be in Eyeries Park this Saturday afternoon at 4.30 for the over-40s’ football tournament, however some local stars from Urhan, Garnish, Adrigole, Bere Island, Glengarriff and Castletownbere will again don their club jerseys to raise funds for Breaking the Silence. Everyone is welcome and bring along the cameras for what promises to be a memorable evening. 1 / 3 Breaking The Silence Thursday, 19 July 2012 15:48 - Last Updated Thursday, 19 July 2012 16:32 Started in the Cobh area in 2007, Breaking The Silence is an entirely voluntary group that works to help create a Suicide Safer Community by connecting the person at risk of Suicide with life preserving resources. Breaking The Silence provides two world standard training programmes in suicide intervention and prevention; the SAFE Talk three-hour workshop and the two-day ASIST course, which stands for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. They are constantly running fundraisers to support the numerous free training programmes they provide for communities. Urhan GAA Club, with the help of our neighbours, hopes to assist with fundraising on Saturday and has urged generous support so that this group can continue to provide communities with free training. A workshop is planned for Beara in the autumn fo all clubs willing to participate. Meanwhile, 1 Life is a dedicated 24-hour freephone national suicide prevention helpline: Call 1800 247 100 to speak confidentially with professional counselors, or text ‘HELP’ to 51444. CIT Student GAA Club – Overview Camogie – Gaelic Football – Hurling – Ladies Gaelic Football - Handball As befits a County with Cork’s tradition in Gaelic Games, GAA has occupied a central role in the development of sport in the Cork Institute of Technology. The Cork Regional Technical College, as it was formally known until its change of title in 1997 to Cork Institute of Technology, first occupied its Bishopstown campus in September 1974. The new college buildings were officially opened by that great Cork GAA exponent and Taoiseach of the day, Mr. Jack Lynch, in December 1977. A student GAA football team was formed in 1975 and the hurling team commenced playing activities in 1976. In the same way the campus has evolved and expanded so too has the GAA Club which as well as being the oldest sporting club at the Institute, with over 400 active members is also the biggest.
