CLASSIC WINTER JUMPING

ADVENTURE AND FUN

HIGHLAND BOWL AT ASPEN HIGHLANDS: Hiking the 800 vertical foot boot-pack to the 12,392 foot peak, is a rite of passage. Pyramid Peak and the Maroon Bells dominate the view as prayer flags ripple in the wind. On powder days the 2,500 foot decent into the bowl can be some of the deepest and steepest skiing on the planet.

SILVER CIRCLE ICE RINK: Adjacent to CP Burger, Silver Circle Ice Rink makes skating a family affair with a charming atmosphere and small-town spirit. Order a burger first and skate it off, or earn yourself some truffle fries by racing your family around the rink.

FIS TRAIL: Aspen Mountain’s FIS Trail was named for the FIS World Championships held here in 1950, marking the first time the event was held outside of Europe. The race included downhill and slalom events, and – for the first time in history – giant slalom. Since then, ski racing has remained an institution in Aspen. Swedish powerhouse Ingemar Stenmark won his final race here in 1989, and Americans Billy Kidd, Tamara McKinney, Phil Mahre, Bill Johnson, and Mikaela Shiffrin have all taken home gold on the historic trail.

HIKING HIGHLAND BOWL

ULLR NIGHTS: The name Ullr gestures toward the Norse God of Snow, and every Friday of the winter season, Aspen-Snowmass creates a winter wonderland at the top of Elk Camp Gondola. Activities such as tubing, ice skating, snow-biking, s’mores and hot chocolate by the bonfire are annual staples of the event, and new this past year is the Alpine Coaster. A full slate of activities is offered inside, and gourmet meals and hot chocolate are the perfect complement to the celebration of the winter season! The cost is ten dollars.

SNOWMASS CROSS COUNTRY CENTER: Access the Roaring Fork Valley’s 90-plus kilometers of free trails from the Snowmass Cross Country Center, where equipment and the Black Saddle Bar and Grille can be found inside. The nearby terrain offers miles of beginner and intermediate cross-country trails. As an added benefit, The Ute Mountaineer runs an in-house shop that offers rentals, and lessons can be booked in the clubhouse.

ASHCROFT SKI TOURING: Located twelve miles from Aspen in the Castle Creek Valley, the ski area offers a range of trails fit for beginner, intermediate, and advanced Nordic skiers. Roughly 22 miles of groomed trails extend over 600 acres surrounding the ghost town of Ashcroft, mixing history and adventure. A sophisticated menu at the Pine Creek Cookhouse will remind you that you’re only miles from ’s culinary capital. Rentals, lessons, and guided tours are available.

BLISS IN THE GROTTOS

MOOSE: Moose are considered to be the most dangerous wild animal in Colorado. Turning and running is the best option when encountering a moose. Get away from the situation as soon as possible, and try to avoid contact. Unlike mountain lions and bears, moose are not easily spooked, and they do not fear humans.

THE LOST FOREST: Elk Camp on Snowmass Mountain now boasts an outdoor adventure forest, complete with an Alpine coaster, zip lines, biking trails, ropes challenges, climbing walls and disc golf courses. There are ponds to fish in and creeks to hike along for a full day of family fun.

WHEELER OPERA HOUSE: With a history that goes back to 1889, Aspen’s beloved community performance venue is the premier spot for films, lectures, community events, opera and marquee concerts. The wheeler has hosted talents such as Jerry Seinfeld, Oprah Winfrey, and Sheryl Crow.

ISIS MOVIE THEATER: Relax in a reclining chair and enjoy a glass of chardonnay for the full cinematic experience in Aspen’s boutique-style movie theater.

SNOWMASS LANES & LOUNGE: This Snowmass hot spot features eight full-length bowling lanes with cushy leather couches and two 300-inch high-definition projection screens. Getting one of the hand-tossed wood-fire pizzas while you enjoy its selection of local beers is a prerequisite after a hard day of skiing. THE ULTIMATE TAXI: The Ultimate Taxi is more than just a ride from point A to point B. The taxi ride is better described as a concert, light show and magic show, with a 1981 Checker taxicab as the venue. Cruise around Aspen and let driver-turned- showman Jon Barnes show you the ride of a lifetime.

JAZZ ASPEN SNOWMASS hosts its Labor Day Experience at the Snowmass Town Park each fall. Past headlines include legendary performers from Lionel Richie and John Oates to Jack Johnson and Keith Urban.

BELLY UP ASPEN: With a 450-person capacity, this adored concert venue has played host to an array of bands and national headliners such as The Temptations, Jimmy Buffet, Snoop Dogg, and John Legend. The intimate setting makes for an up-close-and- personal live music experience that’s unrivaled by any other ski town.

BUD LIGHT HI-FI CONCERT SERIES features three highly anticipated performances, two of which fall in the spring. Past years’ lineups have included Umphree’s McGee, Real Big Fish, Jamestown Revival, and Big Gigantic.

THE ASPEN MUSIC FESTIVAL AND SCHOOL’S summer season offers eight jam- packed weeks with more than 400 classical music events around town, including concerts by five orchestras, solo and chamber performances, fully staged operas, and small outdoor shows around town – like busking musicians often seen playing in front of Paradise Bakery.

ELK MOUNTAIN EXPEDITIONS brings a local touch to rafting expeditions on the Roaring Fork and Arkansas rivers. Personalized river trips and individualized attention make them one of the best in the business.

ASPEN CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES: ACES’ team of naturalists offers daily guided snowshoe tours on top of Aspen Mountain, Snowmass and Ashcroft. The naturalist-guided ski tour at Snowmass runs twice daily and on Fridays as part of Ullr nights. January through Mach, ACES puts on a twice weekly slideshow series at Hallam Lake, where adventurers share tales and environmental experts speak on various topics.

CASTLE PEAK

Pierre Wille, Proprietor

Thank you for staying at the Tyrolean Lodge

Spring Backcountry Skiing

Uphill skiing the new rage, and in the spring, the alpine ski touring in the Elk Mountains around Aspen and Marble Colorado is unsurpassed. The avalanche danger usually stabilizes somewhat in mid-April just about the time the lifts close. The freeze / thaw cycle begins and the snowpack in the surrounding mountains are a paradise where almost everything becomes skiable if you are willing to get up very early and hike.

There are 7 fourteeners and countless 12 and 13 thousand foot peaks to skin up and ski down. Classic nearby ski tours include: Mt. Hayden, Mt. Sopris and Castle Peak. The photos through out the lodge hallways are all in the Elk Mountains. Around Memorial Day, Independence Pass opens and the skiing on the top is awesome. Blue Mountain, Mountain Boy and Fourth of July Bowl are incredible shots with short hikes and long descents to lower switchbacks on the road. Also, check out the classic couloir on 13,989’ Grizzly Peak. Also around Memorial Day the road to the Maroon Bells opens providing access to Pyramid Peak, North and South Maroon and countless other real ski mountaineering objectives. Castle Creek Road is open year round for access to a plethora of peaks and backcountry huts. Aspen Expeditions is a great guide service and touring gear shop as well as the Ute Mountaineer.

If you like to skin, come stay with us for the corn harvest. Skiing usually last through mid June in the high mountains.
