Paradoxes of the Nouvelle Vague
ARTICLES · Cinema Comparat/ive Cinema · Vol. I · No. 2. · 2013 · 77-82 Paradoxes of the Nouvelle Vague Marcos Uzal ABSTRACT This essay begins at the start of the magazine Cahiers du cinéma and with the film-making debut of five of its main members: François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette and Jean-Luc Godard. At the start they have shared approaches, tastes, passions and dislikes (above all, about a group of related film-makers from so-called ‘classical cinema’). Over the course of time, their aesthetic and political positions begin to divide them, both as people and in terms of their work, until they reach a point where reconciliation is not posible between the ‘midfield’ film-makers (Truffaut and Chabrol) and the others, who choose to control their conditions or methods of production: Rohmer, Rivette and Godard. The essay also proposes a new view of work by Rivette and Godard, exploring a relationship between their interest in film shoots and montage processes, and their affinities with various avant-gardes: early Russian avant-garde in Godard’s case and in Rivette’s, 1970s American avant-gardes and their European translation. The Legacy of Black Musicians: Entertainer Josephine Baker by Lilyana D’Amato In the decade following the First World War, French popular culture was dominated by images of negrophilia: the disconcerting obsession with and seizure of Black — specifically African — culture. Introduced to African folk art through global imperialism and colonialism, the French became fascinated with racialized depictions of the “savage” Black body, fetishizing Blackness through painting, sculpture, film, and performance. In the early 1920s, avant-garde Parisian artists began appropriating Black culture as a means of exploring what they saw as the juxtaposition between the “primitive” and changing notions of modernity. When entertainer Jospehine Baker, the hugely influential African American expatriate, arrived in Paris in 1925, she became the face of this racialized mania. Her body and persona came to signify the exotic, used to satisfy colonialist sexual fantasies. In reviews of Baker’s most iconic performance, her 1925 stage debut in La Revue Nègre, she is almost solely described through animalistic metaphors — as a monkey, a panther, a giraffe, or a snake. In the Parisian newspaper Candide, the reviewer begins: “This is no woman, no dancer. It’s something as exotic and elusive as music, an embodiment of all the sounds we know.” Dehumanized and reduced to something, Baker was, as Scholar Alicja Sowinska explores in her paper Dialectics of the Banana Skirt: The Ambiguities of Josephine Baker’s Self-Representation, “popularly situated in a sort of netherworld, suspended between civilization and savagery, and between the human and the animal.” References to Baker’s ambiguous humanity also appeared in e.e. -

One of Dindo's documentaries features painter and sculptor Paul Gauguin in conjunction with the Gauguin: Maker of Myth exhibition, on view at the Gallery from February 27 through June 5, 2011. In celebration of the exhibition In the Tower: Nam June Paik (March 12–October 2, 2011), the Gallery will present All For All: Collaborative Channeling, a program highlighting three videos that Nam June Paik made in collaboration with other artists: Guadalcanal Requiem, You Can't Lick Stamps in China, and Allan ‘n' Allen's Complaint. Washington premieres include Lost Bohemia, a film about a spectrum of artists, musicians, dancers, and actors who once resided in the now-demolished Carnegie Studio Towers, and Son of Babylon by Iraqi filmmaker Mohamed Al-Daradji.
