We aspire to be a dynamic educational community grounded by Quaker values in the pursuit of truth, knowledge, self-revelation, lifelong friendship, kindness, and the dignity of all. Our shared values sit at the heart of this education to help us foster healthy relationships and a productive learning environment. Please take a moment to read through the Community Handbook, which outlines the School’s expectations of conduct and behaviors. Additional information regarding the specific protocols and policies relating to the COVID-19 pandemic can be found in the School Plan for 2020/21 (posted at sidwell.edu/Fall2020). All parents, guardians, and students agree to read, understand, and abide by the terms of this handbook upon signing the enrollment contract. Beginning this school year, parents, guardians, and students who have reached the age of 18 must also sign an acknowledgment of this revised edition of the handbook before the academic year begins. In addition, students who will participate in in-person learning when the campuses reopen will be required to have parents/guardians sign a return-to-campus waiver. Parents are expected to support the School’s values and standards and, in their interactions with other mem- bers of the School community, to treat one another with openness, honesty, and mutual respect. Please read the general information section, which states basic policies and procedures for all three divisions, and then the section that pertains to specific guidelines for the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools. While this book might not address every circumstance or situation, the policies and procedures outlined are intended to apply to general School life. From time to time, a scenario may require an immediate or nonstan- dard response. The handbook does not limit the School’s ability to deal with individual circumstances as they arise in the manner the School deems most appropriate, taking into consideration the best interests of the School, its students, faculty, employees, or overall community. The policies may also be revised or updated periodically, even during the academic year, as deemed necessary by the School. You will be advised of any changes as they are made through the weekly School newsletter. Any student, parent, or guardian with a ques- tion about any handbook policy or statement should feel free to speak with the appropriate division head, the assistant head of school for academic affairs, or me. I look forward to sharing the year with you and hope we all have a positive and productive year together. For early closings or unexpected emergencies, phone messages will also be sent. • The School website: sidwell.edu. Early Closing Early closings will be determined by the administration and communicated via the methods listed above. Parents/guardians indicate emergency dismissal preferences during the annual enrollment process, including the designation of at least two persons authorized for emergency pickups, and for grades 5–12 only, alternate forms of transportation the student may take. To update emergency contacts throughout the academic year, use the “Update Household Information” form in QuakerZone. Aftercare Program If School campuses close early due to inclement weather or other emergency, Aftercare will not be held. If the School does not close early but after-school and evening events are canceled on campus, Aftercare and the Early Childhood Learning Center will close at 4:00 pm. After-School and Evening Events When School campuses are closed for a weather emergency, after-school and evening events are canceled. The head of school or a designee, however, may make some exceptions to this policy. Information about exceptions will be communicated directly to the participants or via the School website, sidwell.edu. Area-Wide Emergency In the event of an area-wide crisis, parents/guardians will receive communication through the SFS Urgent Notification System (email, phone, and text) with instructions on next steps. Depending on the situation, a scenario could occur where parents may not be able to pick up their children right away. In such situations, the School follows protocols stated in the School’s Crisis Management Plan. Snow Makeup Days Designated snow makeup days are February 15, 2021 (Presidents’ Day), and May 31, 2021 (Memorial Day). If required, additional makeup days may be added to the end of the academic year. She has tremendous experience as a collaborative and empowering leader and as an adept administrator. Her focus on building strong and trusting relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni will make her an excellent guide for Sheridan. Jessica is moving to DC from The Athenian School in Danville, California, where she is the head of middle school and assistant head of school for advancement. Prior to joining Athenian, Jessica was the head of the middle school at Gateway School in Santa Cruz, California, where she also taught algebra, geometry, American history, and English. Jessica holds an M.A. in independent school leadership from Columbia University and a B.A. in English and American literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Over the past several months, Jessica has oriented herself to Sheridan’s programs and operations. In addition to working closely with Adele Paynter, our acting head of school, and the Board of Trustees, Jessica has visited the Sheridan campus and has spent time in classrooms, experiencing and absorbing our SHERIDAN SCHOOL unique culture. The teams were selected by coaches in each sport through majority vote. COACH OF THE YEAR Steve Turner, Boys Varsity Head Coach, Gonzaga College HS Coach Turner is completing his sixteenth (16) year as head coach at Gonzaga College HS. He currently holds an overall record of 396-142. He has been named the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Coach (WCAC) of the Year five (5) times during his Gonzaga tenure while his teams have captured four (4) WCAC titles and he was the first ever National Gatorade Coach of the year in 2015-16. He was also named the Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year for the 2018-19 season. He has coached two (2) DCSAA Players of the Year, fourteen (14) First Team All-WCAC players, ten (10) First Team All- Met players, nine (9) DC Gatorade Players of the Year, five (5) DCSAA First Team players, six (6) First Team USA Today All-USA DC players and is the first two time winner of the DCSAA State Championship Tournament, capturing the title in 2016-17 and 2019-20. His team 2007-08 squad finished ranked #4 by ESPN and Sports Illustrated, #1 in USA National final poll and #10 in the USA Today final poll.     Shakespeare Monologue Competition March 12, 2007 Imagination Stage Imagination Stage and the Center for Renaissance & Baroque Studies would like to congratulate all the students who performed at the Monologue Competion on March 12, 2007. These students showed bravery, courage, and insight into the characters they chose to represent, and their appreciation for one another's work was evident in the comments they offered during the discussion that followed the performances. Judges selected five stand-out performances but observed that students had grown enormously in the course of learning their monologues and that many of the performances were noteworthy.     DISCUSSION/ACTION Office of the Superintendent of Schools MONTGOMERY COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS Rockville, Maryland October 10, 2016 MEMORANDUM To: Members of the Board of Education From: Jack R. Smith, Superintendent of Schools Subject: Final Approval of the Comprehensive Master Plan Under the Bridge to Excellence in Public Schools Act of 2002 (BTE), enacted by the Maryland General Assembly in 2002, Local Education Agencies (LEAs) in Maryland are required to submit a Comprehensive Master Plan (Master Plan) that links school finance to decisions concerning school improvement annually. BTE is a standards-based approach to public school financing. BTE requires the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to set academic content and student achievement standards, ensure that schools and students have sufficient resources to meet those standards, and hold schools and school systems accountable for the performance of all students and all racial/ethnic and special services groups. By design, the legislation requires school systems to integrate state, federal, and local funding and initiatives into the Master Plan. Background The BTE legislation provides a framework for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and other LEAs to increase student achievement and close the achievement gap. The legislation increased state aid for public education and required each LEA to develop a Comprehensive Master Plan that is updated each year. The Master Plan describes the goals, objectives, and strategies that will be used to improve student achievement. In addition, the Master Plan includes detailed summaries of the alignment between our current Fiscal Year (FY) 2017 budget, the FY 2016 actual budget, and the Master Plan goals and objectives.
