Extent: 28 cm of textual records ; 36 photographs ; 6 audio reels Biography: Dr. Helen Evans Reid, former Head of the Medical Publications Department of the Hospital for Sick children in Toronto, is the author of All Silent, All Damned: The Search for Isaac Barr (Toronto: Ryerson Press, 1969. Shortt FE 3242.9 B37R45 1969). Reid spent six years and travelled to various countries to carry out her research on Isaac Montgomery Barr. Although and Anglican minister, Barr, working under the auspices of both the British and Canadian governments, organized a colony of middle class British immigrants to settle in the Lloydminster area. Barr was responsible for all arrangements including transportation, sleeping accommodations, the allotment of homesteads and the supply of foods, equipment, livestock and other homestead items. Since Barr lacked administrative skills, he was blamed for many of the colony’s problems. In fact, he was even accused of absconding with the immigrant’s funds. Reid challenges this negative interpretation of Barr in her sympathetic biography. She portrays Barr as a man with “a vision”. Custodial History: In April – May 1988 Reid decided to deposit her research material in the University of Saskatchewan Library, Special Collections. Scope and Content: The types of materials that Reid gathered to support her thesis are noted in her acknowledgments. She states: “Since the memory of the elderly is keen but capricious and recall tends to telescope time, I have relied, with one notable exception, on personal accounts for opinions, descriptions and anecdotes only. -

A Miniature Coxey's Army: The British Harvesters' TorontD-to-Ottawa Trek of 1924 WJ.C. Cherwinski THE MEN TRUDGING THROUGH the late-winter mud on the shoulder of the road between Toronto and Ottawa in March 1924 did not attract much attention from onlookers except comments about the World War I greatcoats they wore and the trademark bundles of the migrant worker they carried on their backs. Despite the men's appearance, this motley aggregation did manage a rough military order, not surprising since most of them had been in uniform only five years before.1 Moreover, their resolve to carry a message of "work and wages" to the Prime Minister meant they had to stick together and see this ordeal through to conclusion. Although their numbers were small (fewer than 40 reached their destination), aided by local radical organizations and with resolute leadership, the Ottawa trekkers of 1924 achieved considerable success in attracting sympathy and publicity for the cause of the immigrant unemployed. Government agencies, well aware of then- potential to make Canada's immigration and employment policies appear in the worst possible light, responded en masse to the threat. As protests go, the Toronto-to-Ottawa march was a minor affair; even so, the marchers' story is a good one and deserves telling. Their experience from start to finish is instructive from a number of perspectives. The trek and the circumstances leading up to it encapsulate a number of social and political developments in the postwar period; indeed, Imperial-Canadian relations in the 1920s are better under stood because of them. -

In commemoration of the Indian Residential School legacy, the Prince Albert Grand Council developed a two-phase project. The first phase was the development of a Denesuline dictionary that includes Denesuline cultural and spiritual traditions. The dictionary was dedicated to former residential school students from each of the three Denesuline communities – Black Lake, Fond du Lac and Hatchet Lake First Nation. Researchers went to each of the communities to interview elders and collect stories which will aid in curriculum development in the future. The second phase of the project was the creation of a virtual museum to celebrate the resiliency and legacy of former residential school students. AS Morton's History of the University
“Written in Letters of Gold” A. S. Morton’s History of the University of Saskatchewan’s First 25 Years By Arthur Morton Introduction and annotations by Cheryl Avery and Patrick Hayes The following illustrated essay is a faithful reproduction of a slide show and lecture given by history professor Arthur Silver Morton on the University of Saskatchewan’s first twenty-five years. It was given between 1934 and 1937, the result of a request to Morton by the Alumni Association, although the audience it was directed toward, or the number of times it may have been presented, is not known. The text, found as an annotated typescript among Morton’s papers, has been unaltered; and from Morton’s notes it was possible to identify and use the same images as in the original presentation, with very few exceptions. The result is an interesting, informal and unique perspective on the University’s first quarter century and an assessment of its achievements and role within the province. Arthur Silver Morton joined the University 1914 as professor of history, with a concurrent appointment as Librarian. He remained with the University and was active on campus even after his 1940 retirement; by the time of this lecture, he had been on faculty for just over two decades. He certainly knew many of the people – students, staff, faculty colleagues, and in some cases government officials – about whom he spoke. In some respects it would therefore be easy to dismiss him as an apologist for the institution. But he was, also, a professional historian, able to sift through and analyse evidence; many of the points he makes were extremely relevant to the time.
