Ra.One feels like an extended remix-mash-up of hit 80's and 90's pop tunes. You recognize the hooks, it makes you smile, but ultimately you long for the originals. Ra.One takes all of the tropes of Bollywood and meshes them into a modern story in a way that is engaging and propulsive. SRK held the film from the beginning, first as the geek then as the superhero. Little Verma was good as Prateek while Rampal always makes a good baddie. Though the film does provide a lovely collage of shiny computer graphics, its narrative power doesn't quite keep you in the game. Everything appears so visibly constructed and all over the place that you gape at the wires, rather than blend in with the experience. It's a film where no character or relationship gets fleshed out well, the climax plays out flat and the crucial fight to the finish meets with a rather tame end. The whole film seems to be dipped in the stop-start-go stutter of an overlong video game.

Female consumers have managed their relation to film costume through negotiations with their tailor as to how film outfits can be modified. These efforts have coincided with, and reinforced, a semiotic of female film costume where eroticized Indian clothing, and most forms of western clothing set the vamp apart from the heroine. Since the late 1980s, consumer capitalism in India has flourished, as have films that combine the display of material excess with conservative moral values. New film costume designers, well connected to the fashion industry, dress heroines in lavish Indian outfits and western clothes; what had previously symbolized the excessive and immoral expression of modernity has become an acceptable marker of global cosmopolitanism. Material scarcity made earlier excessive costume display difficult to achieve. The altered meaning of women’s costume in film corresponds with the availability of ready-to-wear clothing, and the desire and ability of costume designers to intervene in fashion retailing. Most recently, as the volume and diversity of commoditised clothing increases, designers find that sartorial choices ‘‘on the street’’ can inspire them, as they in turn continue to shape consumer choice. Despite this, the films directed by women have compelled audiences to take notice, because of the wide spectrum of issues they have touched upon. Three women directors, whose movies have left an indelible mark on the audiences, include Tanuja Chandra, Meghna Gulzar and Gauri Shinde. This paper analyses the work of these three women directors, for the uniqueness of their themes and the characters they have sketched, and attempts to find out, what has led to their films being etched deeply, into the consciousness of their audience.     Designer Report Introduction Manish Malhotra is an Indian fashion designer who often works with Hindi cinema actresses. Born in 1965, Manish Maholtra grew up knowing he wanted to become a part of the fashion industry, choosing to forgo taking over his family's business to pursue a fashion career. He launched his label in 2005.In 2014, his label marked a turnover of over INR 1 Billion making it one of the first Indian luxury fashion houses to do so. Manish Malhotra started his career as a model, while studying at the Elphinstone College in Mumbai. Though he did not have formal fashion design training, he was attracted towards costume design due to interest in clothes, costumes and art. The designer’s fascination with fashion began at 14 during the preparation for his brother’s wedding, during which he took great interest in the design of his mother’s clothes and jewelry for the occasion. In 1998, he ventured into mainstream designing with his couture store 'Reverie - Manish Malhotra’. This brought him clientele from beyond the film industry to incl ude fashion-mavens across India and the Indian diaspora. Soon after, he received appreciation for his glamorous ensembles using traditional colors, craftsmanship, textures and embroideries presented at his first runway show in November 1999.In 2005, he launched his couture label MANISH MALHOTRA which offers bridal, couture, diffusion and men's wear collections and currently retails at two stores in Mumbai and New Delhi.
