In this course, we will focus on studio painting with oils. Beginning with sketches, colour studies and roughs, learn how to build a painting, taking advantage of the unique properties that have made oil paint artists’ medium of choice for centuries. Andrew Sookrah was born in Guyana, South America and immigrated to Canada in 1974. He lives and works in Toronto. Alla prima, also known as direct painting or wet-on-wet oil painting, is an Italian term which means “at first.” Using this technique, you will complete entire paintings in one or two sessions, without waiting for the paint layers to dry completely. MIXED MEDIA 16 BRUCE LEPPER Carving & Painting the European Robin

With the European robin as our subject, we will spend the first three days carving an alert pose in tupelo wood using power tools and will then bring the bird to life by painting its colours. Special attention will be paid to various aspects of the bird’s anatomy, so students will achieve an understanding of form. This class is recommended for intermediate and advanced wood carvers. A materials fee of $30, payable to the instructor, covers the tupelo wooden blank, patterns in black and white and colour, a set of eyes and feet, as well as sealer, gesso and the use of all necessary paints.

Bruce Lepper came to carving wildfowl in 1986, after a career as an advertising art director and graphic designer. Since 1987, he has won numerous awards, including many best of shows in Canada and the U.S. In 2003, he placed second in World Decorative Miniature Wildfowl and Best in Masters Decorative Life-Size Wildfowl at the Ward World Championship. In April 2010, he won the John Scheeler Memorial Award, considered the highest award in wildfowl carving. He is a respected judge and teacher of bird carving and has worked in many collections in Canada and the U.S.
