Research Project Summmary Main Research
Research project summmary Main research fields: zoology and reproductive physiology specialization fields: Animal reproduction, Behavioural ecology, Behavioural physiology, sociobiology. My research interests focus mainly on the sociobiology of African rodent moles (Bathyergidae) and in particular the extrinsic and intrinsic factors that have led to the evolution of sociality in this remarkable endemic African family. My research group is fundamentally interested in elucidating the modes and mechanisms that are responsible for reproductive suppression in the non-reproductive females of the various species. Research is currently being directed at the neuroendocrine and molecular levels to elucidate the extent, nature and location of GnRH suppression. We are also interested in the photic and thermic input in the control of reproduction in seasonally reproducing mole-rats and the potential lack of a role in aseasonally breeding bathyergids. Long term population studies on social mole-rats from mesic and xeric environments are underway. These studies are providing empirical data on the spatial distribution of colonies, longevities, factors restricting and promoting dispersal, vagility, foraging methods and lifetime reproductive success. We are interested in the genetic relatedness of colonies and also the type of paternal skew operational in the social genera. This work is being carried out in collaboration with Dr Chris Faulkes at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London. Students currently under supervision MSc (research) 1. The United Republic of Tanzania June, 2018 The United Republic of Tanzania National Environment Statistics Report, 2017 Tanzania Mainland The National Environment Statistics Report, 2017 (NESR, 2017) was compiled by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in collaboration with National Technical Working Group on Environment Statistics. The compilation work of this report took place between December, 2016 to March, 2018. Funding for compilation and report writing was provided by the Government of Tanzania and the World Bank (WB) through the Tanzania Statistical Master Plan (TSMP) Basket Fund. Biodiversity Data Journal 9: e71266. https://doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.9.e71266 Abstract Background Here we present the sampling event dataset that contributes to the knowledge of current vegetation of the Prioksko-Terrasnyi Biosphere Reserve (part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves), Moscow Region, Russia. The Reserve is situated on the terraces of the Oka River in the zone of mixed coniferous forests. New information The dataset provides 269 relevés (9174 associated occurrences) of renewed vegetation collected in 2019-2020. It is aimed at sampling vegetation data from the Reserve area with particular interest to sites with invasive species and sites with recent deadfall in the spruce stands caused by the bark beetle-typographer. The dataset contains representative information on plant communities in localities with assigned GPS coordinates, sampled using the standard relevé method with the Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. -

NATURE RESERVE OF ORANGE COUNTY NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release June 13, 2016 Irvine, California-- Between June 18 to June 24 and July 5 to July 12, the Nature Communities Coalition (NCC), in collaboration with OC Parks, Irvine Ranch Conservancy, and The Nature Conservancy will conduct an aerial weed survey during daylight hours using a small, low-flying helicopter to document and map the distribution of over 30 weed species located within selected inland parks and open space areas. The resulting information will provide details about the abundance and distribution of invasive weeds and help land managers evaluate the effectiveness of current weed monitoring practices, identify emerging weed problems, and strategically plan future weed management actions. Notices describing the aerial weed survey will be posted at trailheads at participating parks and open space areas during the project period. The aerial weed survey will be focused on mapping the distribution of artichoke thistle and a minimum of 30 other established and emerging invasive weeds which degrade natural habitat values important to wildlife and the park visitor experience. The list comprises of 30 currently known amphibians (28 anurans and two caecilians), which includes 11 families and 15 genera. In addition, individual records per species, distribution in the reserve and brief remarks about the species are presented. The checklist is based on information from museum collections, field guides, unpublished reports and newly collected field data. We are able to confirm the presence of two Eastern Afromontane species in the SHNR: Scolecomorphus cf. vittatus and Callulina cf. kreffti. The latter has not been recorded since the original collection of a single specimen over 50 years ago. -

Zambia Pitta Tour & Black-cheeked Lovebird Extension 01 - 11 December 2015 Tour Leader Tertius Gous Photographs by Tertius Gous taken on this tour www.birdingafrica.com Day 1: The first day was mostly a travel day as we departed from Livingstone at noon and traveled in a westerly direction to our lodge situated along the Zambezi River. Roadside birds seen during the journey consisted of Pied Crow, Helmeted Guineafowl, Yellow-billed Kite, Knob-billed Duck, White- browed Sparrow-weaver, Meve’s Starling and Hamerkop. We made a short birding stop in some well-developed mopane woodland where we recorded Southern Carmine and Blue-cheeked Bee- eaters, Red-breasted Swallow, Grey-backed Camaroptera, Brubru and White-crested Helmet- Shrike. Our lodge was situated along a quiet backwater of the Zambezi River and late afternoon birding produced good sightings of Southern Masked-Weaver, Holub’s Golden Weaver, African Jacana, African Openbill, White-faced Duck, Wire-tailed Swallow, White-winged Tern, while Little Rush Warbler and Luapula Cisticola called from the reed beds. Days 2 - 3: We were woken the next morning by the melodious calls of White-browed Robin-Chats emanating from the lush riverine vegetation and gardens of the lodge. Breakfast was served on a wooden deck overlooking the river and we soon got onto a Slaty Egret foraging along the shore, while the antics of Tilapia around their nesting circles in the river was fascinating to watch. The morning was alive with birds and our list was growing quickly with additions such as Red- billed Francolin, Swamp Boubou, Southern Grey- headed Sparrow, African Mourning Dove, Common Waxbill, nesting African Paradise-Flycatcher, Southern Brown-throated Weaver, Brown and Red- billed Firefinch, White- browed and Coppery-tailed Coucal, African Green Pigeon and Diderik Cuckoo. -
