18 SOME RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE AREA OF SOCIAL JUSTICE AND FAIRNESS

(1) My initial work on justice focused on the construction of a systematic typology of just and unjust situations (see Törnblom, 1977a) on the basis of which a set of integrated propositions was generated (and partially tested in a few empirical studies – see Törnblom, 1977b, 1982, Donnenwerth & Törnblom, 1975). The theoretical paper (1977a) has been widely cited and was noted by Unesco (The Division for the Study of Development) which resulted in an assignment to write a report for the international ”Meeting of Experts on Application of the Criterion of Equity to Development Analysis and Planning” (see Törnblom, 1977c; Jobert, Rew & Törnblom, 1979). This project is described in detail in Bernard Schaffer & Geoff Lamb’s (1981) book ”Can equity be organized?”

(2) A second set of contributions to the area of justice and fairness concern the differentiation of ’subrules’ of justice, showing empirically that people do conceive of justice in those terms, and that subrules of justice indeed have differential impact on a variety of responses. Conceptually, a major value of this research is the realization that most justice principles may be operationalized in more than one way (i.e., may encompass several subrules), and that a given principle may be meaningless unless it is defined in terms of a specific subrule. (See Törnblom & Jonsson, 1985.)

(3) Theoretical developments and empirical comparisons between the (different) effects that positive and negative resource allocations may have on justice conceptions and choice of justice principles. (See Törnblom, 1988; Törnblom & Jonsson, 1985, 1987; Törnblom et al., 1991; Törnblom & Vermunt, 1998, 1999; Törnblom & Ahlin, 1998; Törnblom & Vermunt, 1998).

(4) Theory and research on the impact of justice and injustice on intergroup relations (e.g., Griffith et al., 1993; Törnblom, 1995). My work in this area considers the complexities that arise when justice/injustice for the individual and justice/injustice between two groups are simultaneously accounted for.

(5) A typology of allocation-principle conflicts between the allocation principles appropriate for the individual and the group and theoretical statements regarding modes of conflict resolution (Törnblom, 1988).

(6) A formal theory towards the integration between distributive and procedural justice, and resource valence, a ‘Total Fairness Model’ (Törnblom & Vermunt, 1999).

(7) Many of the above contributions also belong within the wider context of mapping the determinants of justice principle conceptions and choices, as part of an effort to explain within- as well as between-situation differences.

(8) A comprehensive and well-received overview of the state-of-the-art of justice and fairness theory and research within social psychology (see Törnblom, 1992). Two more recent overviews are provided in Jasso & Törnblom (2014) and Törnblom & Kazemi (2014).

(9) A systematic exploration of the effects of the transacted resource (following Foa’s theory and classification of particularistic and universalistic resources) on justice conceptions (e.g.,

19 Törnblom & Foa, 1983; Törnblom et al., 1985; and various chapters in the Törnblom & Kazemi 2012 Handbook of Social Resource Theory).

(10) A formal theory towards the integration between distributive justice, procedural justice, and resource theories (Törnblom & Vermunt, 2007).

(11) A resource production theory of distributive justice. A new direction for research on distributive and procedural justice, viz. the impact on justice conceptions and behavior of the way the allocated resources are produced or acquired (Törnblom & Kazemi, 2007).

(12) A typological framework for the analysis of distributive justice conflicts (Törnblom & Kazemi, 2012).
