Environmental Policy

Scilly is an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and Hell Bay is located on the island of Bryher, the smallest of the inhabited islands, just 1 mile long by ¼ mile wide with a total number of around 74 residents. The island also has a number of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). Hell Bay is the largest single employer and serviced accommodation provider on the island and as such we believe that we have a duty to help care for this unique environment. Waste Management – The Isles of Scilly recycles cans and plastics but wherever possible it is recommended for the environment to reuse. Glass is collected on St Mary’s and once collected the glass jars and bottles are crushed and the resulting material is sold locally for use in non-structural building projects.

Save water - Water on Bryher is sourced from a fragile water table. The water is pumped to a reservoir on Timothy's Hill, from Bore Holes. The hotel uses approximately 30% of the total water usage of Bryher, so please help us to conserve as much as possible. We collect all rain water from the hotel roofs and this is used to flush the toilets, but please take showers rather than baths, turn off the taps whilst brushing your teeth, report leaks and dripping taps and only leave your towels out to be washed when they are dirty. Swimming pool towels are also provided, but please retain your towel and only put it to be washed once you have finished with it.

Refill – To help cut down on the use of plastic bottles we are a registered refill station, as are many other establishments around the islands. Just ask at the bar and they will refill your water bottle ready for your days exploring. Whilst out and about if you need a refill look out for this logo.

Transport - the hotel's policy is to minimise its use of transport. Whilst we will gladly provide transport to guests on arrival and departure, we encourage you to adopt a healthy lifestyle (even if only whilst on Scilly) and walk when ever possible. Countryside Code - help us to protect this stunning natural environment by taking care not to damage plants or harm wildlife. Take all litter away with you. Leave gates closed, keeping dogs under control and on a lead, livestock is found all around Bryher.
