During the period covered by this report the active personnel included the PI, three graduate students (Darren Leigh, Rik Koda, and Jonathan Weintroub, each averaging a quarter-time research commitment), a Harvard undergraduate (Derrick Bass), and a recent mathematics graduate from Harvard (Nick Shectman). 2. RESEARCH ACCOMPLISHED 2.1 Dual-Horn Antenna Performance As described in the previous progress report, we designed, built, and installed a pair of stacked pyramidal horns. The design was a compromise, with a reduced edge taper of 5.5dB (compared with the canonical 10dB). This was done in order to increase beam lobe overlap, and to permit two horns to fit in the existing radome, which was originally built to hold a single conical horn. We took the unusual step of truncating the corners (see Figure 4 in the previous report), to allow a larger horn aperture within the constraints of a cylindrical radome. Our calculations predicted only a 0.6dB loss of antenna efficiency, and a point-source crossover at the -4dB point; we assumed no feedhorn interactions. -

MULLIKEN WAS a quiet, soft-spoken man, yet so R single-minded and determined in his devotion to under- standing molecules that he came to be called “Mr. Molecule.” If any single person’s ideas and teachings dominated the development of our understanding of molecular structure and spectra, it surely was Robert Mulliken. From the begin- ning of his career as an independent scientist in the mid- 1920s until he published his last scientific papers in the early 1980s, he guided an entire field through his penetrat- ing solutions of outstanding puzzles, his identification (or discovery) and analysis of the new major problems ripe for study, and his creation of a school—the Laboratory of Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy or LMSS at the University of Chicago, during its existence the most impor- tant center in the world for the study of molecules. Robert’s background led him naturally into academic sci- ence. He was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in a house built by his great-grandfather in about 1798. His father, Samuel Parsons Mulliken, was a professor of chemistry at MIT, which made him a daily commuter between Newburyport and Boston. St. Ninian’s Parish Church Sunday 7th June 2020 Matthew 28: 16 – 20; Psalm 8; 2 Cor 13: 5 - 14 In 1990 the astronomer Carl Sagan suggested that the Voyager space probe, which had been launched in 1977, should capture an image of Earth as the probe reached the outer reaches of our solar system. It did so, and in the grainy image, which it sent back to us, Earth shows up as a pale blue dot. Carl Sagan published a book in 1994 called Pale Blue Dot. He wrote, ‘Consider again that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us.... The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena.... To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.’1 Carl Sagan wasn’t the first to imagine earth as a dot in the universe. In 1919, the philosopher Bertrand Russell wrote of our world, On this dot, tiny lumps of impure carbon and water, of complicated structure, with somewhat unusual physical and chemical properties, crawl about for a few years, until they are dissolved again into the elements of which they are compounded... No one is liberated from fear who dares not see his place in the world as it is; no one can achieve the greatness of which he is capable until he has allowed himself to see his own littleness.2 Neither Carl Sagan, nor Bertrand Russell before him were the first to consider the smallness of our world and the fragility of those who live on it. -
