H. Bowers - A Brief Overview : Pt 1

Harry Bowers who was a skilled auto electrician founded H. Bowers Limited in 1939. His customer base consisted of all the local utilities ie. Electricity Board, Gas Board, Water Board, National Coal Board, City and County Councils, Fire, Police and Ambulance authorities with whom he held supply and maintenance agreements. It also included fleet operators and general garage repair shops.

He traded successfully until 1968 when my late father who ran his own vehicle repair workshop in Stoke-on-Trent purchased the business from him. My father ran the business from a supervisory only point of view for a period of one year when he suffered a major heart attack. At this point in time I was working for him as a mechanic. Due to his heart condition putting him out of action for a considerable period of time it was decided that I would have to take over the supervisory role previously carried out by him.

Once a week it was my responsibility to visit key customers to obtain orders and to promote the business. I was quite keen to develop the already well established heavy commercial and heavy plant sectors of the business albeit this meant working long and unsociable hours.

As a result of our involvement with the National Coal Board in repairing their heavy mobile plant and the work that we were carrying out for many open cast coal contractors who were operating in the surrounding area plus the majority of the limestone quarries in the nearby peak district we were very strong and conversant with American Delco Remy equipment which was to be found on Caterpillar, Terex, Cummins and Detroit Diesel engines.

It became evident to me that there was a demand nationally for the products that we were supplying on a day to day basis to this type of customer in our own locality.

At this point I decided to promote the sale of Delco Remy products to other auto electrical specialists throughout the country which proved extremely successful and became the foundation for our national distribution business. It was not long before the Lucas Industries company owned subsidiary Lucas Service (LSUK) became our single largest customer.

Having set out to promote the American Delco Remy product throughout the UK, it came as a surprise to find that we were getting numerous enquiries for products manufactured by many other leading companies i.e. Lucas, C.A.V., Bosch, Hella, Rubbolite, Eberspacher, Butec (now Prestolite), Denso, Nikko, Sawafuji etc, etc.

Due to our extensive stock holding and in depth product knowledge, we were able to satisfy this demand and it just grew from there. We were even supplying Lucas parts to Lucas.

In the very early days we were agents for A.C. Delco which was the light vehicle equipment produced by General Motors, however due to our experience with the American product it was not too long before we were promoted to the status of 5 star distributor by Delco Remy USA. This enabled us to procure product manufactured by them through their European distribution centre in Antwerp. At this time we were one of only fifteen 5 star distributors in the UK authorised by Delco Remy to handle product, service and warranty on their behalf. Latterly we became the only active 5 star distributor remaining in the country.

From 1939 the business traded from its original premises in Gower Street, Longton and relocated to the existing site in 1977. The premises have been continually extended and upgraded ever since.

1975 saw us appointed as one of the first Distributors for Butec Electrics, this being the company formed by Leyland Truck and Bus to manufacture rotating electrics for their own vehicles, under licence from Leece Neville of the States. This equipment is now better known as Prestolite.

1978 appointed Delco Remy Five Star distributor.

In 1980 we were appointed as one of the very first Eberspacher dealers for the country, a distributorship that we have constantly developed year on year to a point where we are now in the top three nationwide.

In 1987 we were awarded the Bosch distributorship for Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire and Mid Wales.

To cater for the growth of the Bosch range we decided to form a new company, Midland Continental Limited. This business traded from a separate location in Longton and has now merged back with H. Bowers Ltd at our sole premises in Normacot Road, Longton.

In 1988 we secured the Lucas CAV franchises for Staffordshire and the surrounding areas.

In addition to the above, we have long standing supply agreements with companies in Canada who supply American manufactured product. We have traded with Wilson and R.C.P. for the best part of thirty years.

We are the leading U.K. distributors for Lucas Elektrik of Turkey. This was formerly a Lucas Industries owned company which was taken over by the management in recent years.

We are the largest independent U.K. customer of Iskra Autoelektrika of Slovenia. They produce rotating electrics for O.E. supply to the likes of Deutz, John Deere, J.C.B., Perkins and many more high profile vehicle and machinery manufacturers. Iskra also purchased the DC motor business, previously owned by Robert Bosch and produce DC motors for many O.E. electric vehicle builders. By the end of 2006 they were supplying in the region of sixty thousand Alternators and Starter Motors a month to Deutz.

Since I became involved in the business back in 1969 I have always had three main principles and objectives in mind. They are,

1. To provide an unrivaled service that can not be bettered. 2. To sell only top quality products. 3. To offer the most competitive prices.

Always in that order and with absolutely no compromise.

After all, when you are dealing with heavy earthmoving companies and they have a CAT D9 broken down in a quarry in the early hours of a Sunday morning and it needs a starter quickly, then price is not the deciding factor, availability of a quality product is. That means getting out of your bed and providing off the shelf delivery seven days and seven nights a week. This is something that we have always done and always will. This is what I call real customer service and what we genuinely pride ourselves on. Something that others may think they offer but when put to the test seldom in this day and age do they.
