Degradation of polyvinyl polymers (polyvinyl formal, polyvinyl alcohol, and polyvinyl acetate) by high- energy heavy ions was analysed with in situ mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. Both at room temperature and at cryogenic temperature, the polymers are severely damaged by scission of side chains and the polymer backbone, releasing a large number of molecular fragments. Correlation of structural analysis of the damaged polymer and mass analysis of its volatile fragments gives plausible Received 6th August 2013 reaction mechanisms for the ion induced degradation. These are compared to thermal degradation. The Accepted 28th September 2013 differences found between the two degradation processes are due to the non-equilibrium character of DOI: 10.1039/c3py01062g the ion based process with its high electronic excitation and ionisation. 1. Introduction It is well known that polymers exposed to ionizing radiation, particularly energetic ions, undergo several changes such as In the last decades, polymers have found a variety of applications, chemical structure degradation and, as a consequence, deteri- – and various polymeric materials have been synthesized with oration in material performance.6 13 Most intense material optimized properties.1 Thisstudyconcentratesonpolyvinyl modications take place when a polymeric material is exposed formal (PVF/Formvar®) which is a popular engineering resin on to heavy ion beams in the MeV–GeV energy region in which the
