2020 Vermont Brewers Festival at Killington Brewery and Beer Guide 2020 VERMONT BREWERS FESTIVAL KILLINGTON KILLINGTON RESORT • MARCH 21, 2020 FESTIVAL GUIDE Presented by the Vermont Brewers Association, an organization founded in 1995 to promote and strengthen the culture of craft brewing in Vermont through marketing, education and advocacy for Vermont made beer. [1] A Letter from the VBA President 2020 VERMONT BREWERS FESTIVAL KILLINGTON A Letter from the VBA President Avery Schwenk On behalf of the Vermont Brewers Association, welcome to the Vermont Brewers Festival Killington! Of all the beer festivals I am involved with, this is perhaps the one I am the most excited about. Why? Because it brings together two of my favorite things about doing business in Vermont: beer and collaboration. The idea for this festival came about by asking “what can the Vermont Brewers Association ofer that no other festival can?” The answer is energizing our brewing community to work together and explore the possibilities of collaboration across the state. We have 15 diferent pairs of brewers that came together to create beers that have never been imagined before, and we get to present them to you here today! I am confdent that you will get to try plenty of beer worth fnding. Speaking of collaboration, there are many people to thank for making this Festival possible. First of all, thank you to our VBA staf, Melissa Corbin, Amy Cronin, and Lauren Mark who have gone above and beyond what is expected to prepare us for success in our third year of this festival. Thank you also to our Vermont Brewers Association Events Committee, chaired by Andrea Gagner of 14th Star Brewing, and the 4 other participating breweries as well. Thank you to our volunteers, who help this festival run smoothly, and without whom we would be utterly lost. Thank you to all the Brewers Association members for taking the time to help us represent our Association with the best Vermont has to ofer and to embrace the spirit of collaboration so wholeheartedly. Thank you to our Allied Trade Partners for your ongoing support of our Association and our industry as a whole. Thank you to Killington Resort for making us feel at home and being wonderful hosts to this exciting event. And most of all, thank all of you for making this festival what it is, and for showing your support of the Vermont Brewers Association, and all the hard work of our staf and members. With your help, we are moving forward with our mission to promote and strengthen the culture of craft brewing in Vermont through marketing, education, and advocacy for Vermont made beer. So, drink responsibly, explore new beers and breweries, meet some brewers, and most of all, enjoy yourselves! Cheers! Avery Schwenk President, Vermont Brewers Association Vice-President and Brewer, Hermit Thrush Brewery [1] Welcome & Festival Team 2020 VERMONT BREWERS FESTIVAL KILLINGTON Welcome to the 2020 Vermont Brewers Festival at Killington! Welcome to the 3rd annual Vermont Brewers Association’s Winter Festival, a tradition that has Vermont brewers flled with excitement and fexing their collective creative muscles. Like our summer festival, we are fortunate to be able to bring some of the best beer to you at a breath-taking location featuring some of the most stunning scenery. Our winter festival was created to highlight collaboration brews from all over the state, and beyond with Killington Mountain being the perfect place for all those to enjoy Vermont, its amazing beer, and phenomenal skiing and snowboarding. This year, we’ve relocated the festival to Bear Mountain, afording us more space and actual ski on/ of opportunities for our attendees. Like our annual summer festival, our goal is to give consumers access to quality beers consistently being produced in the State of Vermont. The winter festival, however, adds a delicious twist; collaboration. This festival features over 30 collaboration brews from the multitude of talented craft brewers within this beautiful state. The collaborations were determined by the brewers themselves and were not hampered by distance, style or brewery size. Large- scale brewers paired with small brewers, northern brewers collaborated with southern brewers, and brewers that specialize in sour beers worked with brewers of traditional ales, among many others. We hope that you’ll enjoy the creativity, ingenuity and hard work that went into creating the beer being ofered at this festival as much as we enjoyed creating them. To be able to ofer the consumer something diferent and unique is what Vermont Craft Brewers are all about and we welcome you to be a part of our beer community. Cheers! Welcome from the President ELCOME TO THE 29TH ANNUAL Great Taste of the Midwest. At a time when we probably should be over- whelmed by the explosive growth of the craft beer industry, we are too busy trying to figure Wout how to make this event a better experience for all. To that end, we are excited that we have maintained the same foot- print as we’ve had in past years, but have added more brewer space, by moving our merch tents and adding a few new tents to a previously restricted staff only area of the park (inside the “loop road”). This allows us bring in some new brewers while continuing to bring back the brewers that you come to expect to see at the Great Taste of the Midwest. I would like to thank Great Taste Chairman, Mark Garthwaite and the multitude of volunteers that make this event happen. We are all very proud that this is the only event of this size that is run by a 100% volunteer effort. Their passion for beer is a large part of what makes a volunteer effort of this size a success. I would also like to thank all of the Brewers that come to the Great Taste of the Midwest. All of “our” passion for beer flows from their passion. As the event has grown and produced more return Brewers each year, we’ve come to think of the Brewers as family coming home every year on the second Saturday in August. Sadly, I have to acknowledge the passing of several MHTG members since the last Great Taste.

  • Beer and Malt Handbook: Beer Types (PDF)
    1. BEER TYPES The world is full of different beers, divided into a vast array of different types. Many classifications and precise definitions of beers having been formulated over the years, ours are not the most rigid, since we seek simply to review some of the most important beer types. In addition, we present a few options for the malt used for each type-hints for brewers considering different choices of malt when planning a new beer. The following beer types are given a short introduction to our Viking Malt malts. TOP FERMENTED BEERS: • Ales • Stouts and Porters • Wheat beers BOTTOM FERMENTED BEERS: • Lager • Dark lager • Pilsner • Bocks • Märzen 4 BEER & MALT HANDBOOK. BACKGROUND Known as the ‘mother’ of all pale lagers, pilsner originated in Bohemia, in the city of Pilsen. Pilsner is said to have been the first golden, clear lager beer, and is well known for its very soft brewing water, which PILSNER contributes to its smooth taste. Nowadays, for example, over half of the beer drunk in Germany is pilsner. DESCRIPTION Pilsner was originally famous for its fine hop aroma and strong bitterness. Its golden color and moderate alcohol content, and its slightly lower final attenuation, give it a smooth malty taste. Nowadays, the range of pilsner beers has extended in such a way that the less hopped and lighter versions are now considered ordinary lagers.
