Back to top Page 4 of 16 MS 4026 Keith Bunda Hunter Papers BIOGRAPHICAL and ADMINISTRATIVE NOTE For the period that this collection covers, Keith Bunda Hunter was an Aboriginal Liaison Officer in the New South Wales Ambulance Service, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) Regional Councillor serving on the Queanbeyan Regional Council, the Bogong Regional Council and the South Eastern NSW/ACT Regional Council, a prison visitor, student and campaigner on many issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission was established in 1990 by the Bob Hawke Labor Government and dismantled in 2004 by the John Howard Liberal Government. Through ATSIC, Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people were formally involved in the government processes and services that affected their lives, seen by many as a measure of self-determination. The breadth of the activities in ATSIC’s remit, and the issues with which Councillors were expected to engage, is evident in the Regional Council meetings papers in this collection. The collection also reveals Keith Bunda Hunter’s commitment to education, prison advocacy, health, housing, sovereignty and self-determination. He made cultural visits to primary schools, was involved in services for Aboriginal students while studying at the University of New England, visited Aboriginal prisoners and liaised with police about the treatment of Aboriginal people in custody, was a member of the Board of the Queanbeyan and District Hospital and Health Service, while being a Councillor on three ATSIC Regional Councils. He also gathered information and grey literature about other self-determination initiatives. Since depositing this collection, Keith Bunda Hunter has worked in health services in Central Australia and south east Queensland.
