Raj No. 83, Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi 2, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, 60000 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Author email address: [email protected] Abstract: The main Beris Dam is founded on a sequence of thick bedded conglomerates and pebbly to fine grained sandstones with minor mudstone mapped as the Semanggol Formation of Triassic age. Ultrasonic pulse measurements show velocities of compressional and shear waves through the sandstones to increase with decreasing grain size; the pebbly sandstone with velocities of 2.210, and 5.171, km/s, and the coarse grained sandstone with velocities of 2.477, and 5.612, km/s, respectively. The medium grained sandstones have compressional and shear wave velocities of 2.457, and 5.793, km/s and the fine grained sandstones, velocities of 2.572, and 5.867 km/s, respectively. Dynamic elastic constants computed from the ultrasonic velocities also increase in values with decreasing grain size; Poisson’s ratio varying from 0.36 to 0.39, the modulus of elasticity from 35.076 to 48.210 GPa, the bulk modulus from 52.260 to 67.362 GPa and the modulus of rigidity from 12.637 to 17.468 GPa. Increasing velocities and elastic constants with decreasing grain size are considered to result from a denser arrangement of constituent grains as shown by increasing dry unit weights. Comparison with the results of an unconfined compression test on a fine grained sandstone indicate that the ultrasonic elastic constants are good approximations of static elastic constants. Archaeological research in the district of Kuala Muda since the 1980s until now have enabled several historical sites to be identified and studies conducted to complete the historical chronology that has occurred in this district. As a result, 52 archeological sites of early civilizations and 26 historical sites have been successfully classified, identified and developed such as the Sungai Batu Archaeological Complex, Pengkalan Bujang Archaeological Complex and Bukit Batu Pahat Archaeological Complex. Due to the need for the development of the district tourism sector, there are seven tourism packages such as Package 1: Pusat Interpretasi Pelancongan Kuala Muda (PIPKM), Package 2: Puncak Jerai, Package 3: Rekreasi Air Terjun Kuala Muda, Package 4: Mineral Kuala Muda, Package 5: Kedah Tua, Package 6: Bakau Sungai Merbok and Package 7: Galeri Tsunami dan Pasar Bisik were established to strengthen the tourism sector in Kuala Muda district with the Kuala Muda Tourism Interpretation Center (PIPKM) being made a one-stop tourism center for the district.     Chapter II The Method of Appointment of Judges to the Superior Courts of Malaysia Under the Federal Constitution and the Judicial Appointments Commission Despite the fact that the question of performing judicial functions independently by judges comes after their appointment, the method of appointment of judges is the crucial and dominant factor to ensure their substantive independence, the independence which greatly depends upon the independent character, integrity, equanimity, legal knowledge and keen intellect of the persons who would hold the office of judges. For, the appointment of a judge on account of political allegiance in utter disregard to the questions of his qualifications, merit, ability, competency, integrity and earlier performance as an advocate or judicial officer may bring in, to use the words of President Roosevelt, ‘Spineless Judges’ who can hardly be expected to dispense justice independently according to law and their own sense of justice without regard to the wishes and desire of the government of the day. There is a great possibility that such a judge may remain ‘indebted to those responsible for his designation ...., the beneficiary is exposed to the human temptation to repay his debt by a pliable conduct of his office’137 especially when the executive itself is a litigant. As H. J. Laski aptly said, ‘It is not necessary to suggest that there will be conscious unfairness; but it is .... possible that such judges will, particularly in cases where the liberty of the subject is concerned’, find themselves unconsciously biased through over-appreciation of executive difficulty...’138 Therefore, ‘in appointing judges, a government owes a duty to the people ..

    2 GEOLOGY OF PENINSULAR MALAYSIA 2.1 INTRODUCTION Peninsular Malaysia has traditionLlly been subdivided into NNW-SSE longitudinal belts on the basis of stratigraphy, mineralisation, geological structure, geological history and tectonic evolution . Scrivenor (19:;8) subdivided the Peninsula into three elongate belts on the basis of mineralisation: a western tin belt, a central gold belt and an eastern tin belt. Hutchison (1977) divided the Peni isula into four major tectonic subdivisions on the basis of different tectonic histories; the '1Vestern Stable Shelf, the Main Range Belt, the Central graben, and the Eastern Belt. Fo ) (1983) divided the Peninsula into four zones on the basis of differences in stratign phy. Khoo and Tan (1983) proposed a threefold subdivision; a Western Belt, Central Belt and an Eastern Belt on the basis of differences in stratigraphy and geological histoi y within Peninsular Malaysia. Within this threefold subdivision, Khoo and Tan (1983' further divided the Western Belt into two regions: a northwest sector and a Kinta-Ma acca sector. Tjia and Harun (1985) recognised four structural domains within the Peninsula. They defined Northwest, West, Central and Eastern structural domains. Within all the above subdivision schemes, the boundary between the eastern and central "belts" is taken as the Lebir Fault 2 one, and the boundary between the central and western "belts" is the Bentong-Raub line of Hutchison (1975).     CLASS AND POLITICS IN MALAYSIAN AND SINGAPOREAN NATION BUILDING Muhamad Nadzri Mohamed Noor, M.A. Political Science College of Business, Government and Law Flinders University Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2017 Page Left Deliberately Blank. Abstract This study endeavours to deliver an alternative account of the study of nation-building by examining the subject matter eclectically from diverse standpoints, predominantly that of class in Southeast Asia which is profoundly dominated by ‘cultural’ perspectives. Two states in the region, Malaysia and Singapore, have been selected to comprehend and appreciate the nature of nation-building in these territories. The nation-building processes in both of the countries have not only revolved around the national question pertaining to the dynamic relations between the states and the cultural contents of the racial or ethnic communities in Malaysia and Singapore; it is also surrounded, as this thesis contends, by the question of class - particularly the relations between the new capitalist states’ elites (the rulers) and their masses (the ruled). More distinctively this thesis perceives nation-building as a project by political elites for a variety of purposes, including elite entrenchment, class (re)production and regime perpetuation. The project has more to do with ‘class-(re)building’ and ‘subject- building’ rather than ‘nation-building’. Although this thesis does not eliminate the significance of culture in the nation-building process in both countries; it is explicated that cultures were and are heavily employed to suit the ruling class’s purpose. Hence, the cultural dimension shall be used eclectically with other perspectives.

The objective of the study was to detect the possible ancient river in Sungai Batu, Lembah Bujang Kedah using magnetic method. The magnetic method was performed using G-856 proton magnometer and the spacing between stations was 20m spacing gridding. The magnetic data was processed by ulitizing Microsoft Excels and Surfer8 software which was displayed in a form of countaring and revealed low residual zones shown possible ancient river. The results of low magnetic values(-280nT to - 400nT) indicated the existed of ancient river within study area.
