On 10 May, Mr. Mahathir, 92, was sworn in as Prime Minister, becoming the world’ s eldest elected head of government. He stated that King has agreed to grant a full pardon to the opposition leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Ibrahim Anwar (see note 2), On 21 May, Mr. Mahathir formed a new Cabinet. Ms. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (Mr. Anwar's wife and President of the People's Justice Party, PKR), became the first woman Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. Prior to the 2018 elections, the BN faced public anger over the cost of living and a corruption scandal involving a state-owned investment fund that emerged in 2015. In January 2018, Mr. Mahathir announced that he would contest the 2018 elections as the Pakatan Harapan's premier candidate, with the stated goal of ousting his former protégé, Prime Minister Najib. During the election campaign, the BN promised more public holidays, no toll charges during Eid and tax exemptions for Malaysians under 26 years old.

    MALAYSIA 2019 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Malaysia is a federal constitutional monarchy. It has a parliamentary system of government selected through regular, multiparty elections and is headed by a prime minister. The king is the head of state, serves a largely ceremonial role, and has a five-year term. Sultan Muhammad V resigned as king on January 6 after serving two years; Sultan Abdullah succeeded him that month. The kingship rotates among the sultans of the nine states with hereditary rulers. In 2018 parliamentary elections, the opposition Pakatan Harapan coalition defeated the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, resulting in the first transfer of power between coalitions since independence in 1957. Before and during the campaign, then opposition politicians and civil society organizations alleged electoral irregularities and systemic disadvantages for opposition groups due to lack of media access and malapportioned districts favoring the then ruling coalition. The Royal Malaysian Police maintain internal security and report to the Ministry of Home Affairs. State-level Islamic religious enforcement officers have authority to enforce some criminal aspects of sharia. Civilian authorities at times did not maintain effective control over security forces. ABSTRACT: It is an indubitable fact that the use of mediation as a form of dispute resolution has gained traction across the globe. More importantly, the practice of mediation has also been transformed through the establishment of several techniques for formalized mediation. This article will provide insights into one of these avenues for formalised mediation, namely, court-annexed mediation practice in Malaysia. It will first discuss the motivations that led to the introduction of such a programme. This will be followed by an analysis of the operational aspects of the practice. A matter of utmost importance concerns the role of the courts and the judiciary in court- annexed mediation and will be considered in great detail. This article will then offer suggestions on how some of the challenges that exist and are inherent in this particular method of formalised mediation could be overcome. These views are expressed with the hope that court-annexed mediation can function as an effective alternative dispute resolution mechanism under the umbrella of the Malaysian courts.

For children, their rights to freedom of religion are mentioned in Article 12(4) of the Federal Constitution. However, there is conflict of law, i.e. between the civil law and Sharia Law, in some cases involving the child’s conversion to Islam, following the conversion of his or her parents. This article aims to discuss on provisions of the Federal Constitution on the child’s right to the freedom of religion. The discussion also elucidate on the father’s right in determining his minor child’s conversion to Islam. The methodology used in gathering relevant data is content analysis. Data was gathered from Sharia Laws, legal provisions, law journals and reported cases relevant to the issue.

The EC rejected their application on the ground they did not fall within the categories of persons qualified to be registered as absent voters as listed under reg 2 (‘reg 2’) of the Elections (Registration of Electors) Regulations 2002. Although the applicants made it clear they were not F challenging the validity of the law or suggesting that the EC’s decision was not in compliance with the law, they, nevertheless, applied to the High Court for judicial review of the EC’s decision. They sought (i) a declaration that they had the right to be registered as absent voters (ii) an order of certiorari to quash the EC’s decision refusing to register them as absent voters (iii) an order of G mandamus directing the EC to register them as absent voters and (iv) alternatively, an order of mandamus directing the EC to make necessary regulations and take all necessary action to enable the applicants to be registered as absent voters and/or postal voters for the purpose of the next general election.
