However, as part our ongoing commitment to understand the Canberra market, we spend a lot of time analysing property data for our own purposes. We’ve decided to share our analysis here in an easy-to-understand format, so you too can gain some insight into what property prices are doing in your area. We have conducted this analysis using publicly available data from allhomes.com.au. Specifically, we wanted to answer the following questions: Which Canberra regions have the highest value of land per square metre? o Specially we compare the Median 2018/19 Unimproved Land Value (UV) per square metre across suburbs of Canberra How have Canberra Land Values changed since last year? o Specifically, we report the change in Median Unimproved Land Value (UV) per square metre from 2017/18 to 2018/19 Is the change in Median Land Values from 2017/18 to 2018/19 reflected in the change in Median House Prices over the same time? In other words, it's the value the land is reportedly worth before any buildings, fences, driveways or anything else is added to it. Why is UV important? When you purchase property, you’re paying for the land and the house on that land. This means the higher the UV, the higher the likely purchase price. The UV almost provides a starting point to work upwards from. The gap between the purchase price of the property and the UV of the land, increases as the perceived value of the home increases. The UV is also what your Government Rates are based on. The higher the UV of your land, the higher your quarterly Rates bills. Methodology We looked at 1099 individual property sales from allhomes.com.au, which roughly equates to the ten most recent house sales in each Canberra suburb. We noted the 2016/17 UV, 2017/18 UV, 2018/19 UV and land size of each property. From this data set, we calculated the $UV per square metre for each property; the median $UV per square metre for each suburb; and the median $UV per square metre for each region. Please note these Median figures are based on the ten most recent sales for each suburb. We also noted the Median Non-Unit Sales Price for each suburb in 2018 and 2017, as well as the respective sales for each year. This information is sourced from Allhomes records and data provided by the ACT Government. The proceeding analysis excludes analysis of units and townhouses. We also excluded suburbs with insufficient sales records for 2018, due to the likelihood this would distort figures. They are also useful if you want to know how the Unimproved Land Value per square metre in your suburb compares to nearby areas. This report does not tell you which suburb to buy property in, nor does it indicate how much your current property is worth. (If you would like to ascertain the value of your own home, please let us know as we can assist with this.) Please note, this report does not predict what property prices are likely to do, nor does it identify ‘hot spots’ to keep an eye on. This report merely presents data that is readily and publicly available, in a different way. Notes/ Limitations Data was obtained from allhomes.com.au over a period of time from 19 November 2018 to 30 November 2018. Please note the data is ‘live.’ For example, as a property transaction settles, the 2018 Median Non-Unit Sales price per suburb is affected, as is the number of property transactions recorded. As such, there may be changes to the 2018 Median Non-Unit Property price over the next month. Significantly increasing the data set would improve the accuracy and reliability of results. As with any analysis of data, it is imperative you make your own enquiries before making any purchasing decisions.     September 2016 BACKGROUND INFORMATION Greenhills Ruin (Part Block 510, Stromlo) At its meeting of 22 September 2016 the ACT Heritage Council decided that the Greenhills ruin was eligible for registration. The information contained in this report was considered by the ACT Heritage Council in assessing the nomination for the Greenhills Ruin against the heritage significance criteria outlined in s10 of the Heritage Act 2004. HISTORY In considering the history of Greenhills Ruin, the ACT Heritage Council acknowledges that the Ngunnawal people are traditionally affiliated with the lands in the Canberra region within and beyond contemporary ACT borders. In this citation, ‘Aboriginal community’ refers to the Ngunnawal people and other Aboriginal groups within the ACT for whom places within the Canberra region are significant. These places attest to a rich history of Aboriginal occupation extending from 25, 000 years ago, as indicated by the Birrigai Rock Shelter, into the 19th century colonial period. They show that Aboriginal people continued living traditionally in the region through to the 1870s-80s. During the 19th century, traditional Aboriginal society in colonised areas suffered dramatic de-population and alienation from traditional land-based resources. In the Canberra region some important institutions such as intertribal gatherings were retained in some degree at least until the 1860s. Pre-Federal Capital Period During the 19th century, Canberra was a rural settlement that grew organically. This settlement was diametrically different to that established during the Federal Capital phase, as it was not guided by formal planning principles. At this time, the settlement comprised a network of large pastoral estates, stations and villages concentrated on the Limestone Plains, today the suburbs of Canberra and in the narrow valleys of Orroral, Gudgenby and Naas, and along the banks of the Murrumbidgee River in the southern part of the Territory (O’Sullivan and Huys 2011: 9).

Over the past three years the water flowing over the Cotter Dam included most of the water released from Corin and Bendora Reservoirs for environmental purposes in the 17km length of the Cotter River between Bendora Dam and the Cotter Reservoir. After overflowing at Cotter Dam this water flows down the Cotter River into the Murrumbidgee River and thence into Burrinjuck Reservoir. If this water had not been released for environmental purposes it would have been available as additional supply to the ACT during the current drought. This regime or water release has been in operation for about 2 1/2 years coinciding with drawdown of water reserves. (i) ACT WATER RESOURCES POSITION STATEMENT BY ENGINEERS AUSTRALIA, CANBERRA DIVISION With the height of summer weather ahead, Canberra’s reservoirs nearly half empty and Stage 3 water restrictions in place, there can be no doubt about the importance of a Water Resources Strategy for the ACT. The public transport service could be seen as inefficient because of low patronage. However it is important, not only for those who face social exclusion (e.g. people at an economic disadvantage and older people) but also to avoid congestion and reduce pollution levels. Nevertheless, without sufficient demand the provision can be very expensive for the government and funding allocation is crucial. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how bus services can be effectively improved in Canberra. The overall aim is to minimise the transport disadvantage often caused by poor public transport services. To do so, this research will investigate the difference in travel patterns of various social groups of passengers (students, older people and pensioners and adults) by using smart card data. The study will first compare the travel patterns of these groups. We will then examine the pattern of movement of the more vulnerable such as older people and students compared to general adult passengers. We will discuss transfer between buses further in order to pinpoint specific bus stops or terminals which could be improved to meet the specific needs of certain passengers.

    CASE PROGRAM 2004-16.1 The 2003 Canberra Fires (A) In the first week of 2003, the Chief Fire Control Officer of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Peter Lucas-Smith, confronted an outlook of high bushfire risk. A drought in the region over the previous two years had dried out the trees, grasses and undergrowth in the abundant bushland of the area. This meant there would be sufficient combustible matter to fuel a major bushfire if a lightning storm or accidental ignition due to human activity occurred in the forests. Wednesday 8 January was hot and windy, and the ACT Bushfire Service declared a Total Fire Ban, the second day in a row in which it was officially illegal to light barbeques, bonfires and other open flame activities in the ACT. At 3.30 pm a lightning storm passed through the region. Lightning strikes ignited two fires in the bushland in western ACT and several fires in forest just beyond the ACT’s western border with New South Wales (NSW). Over the next week, firefighting services from the ACT and from NSW took various approaches to combating the fires. By 14 January, the fires had not been put out and had burnt several thousand hectares. There were now three distinct fire fronts on the western perimeter of the ACT, about 30km from the suburbs of Canberra, the ACT’s capital city. The forecast for the weekend was for high temperatures and for strong north-westerly winds which could potentially drive the fire towards Canberra. Lucas-Smith had responsibility for directing the firefighting effort and briefing the Chief Minister of the ACT on the situation.

    1 A History of St Michael’s Parish and Mass Centre, Kaleen ACT A PLACE FOR WORSHIP On 7 October 1976, Archbishop Cahill officially “… dismembered the parish of St Monica, Evatt, and erected the parish of St Michael the Archangel, Kaleen, as from the 4th of November 1976”. The suburbs of Giralang and Kaleen had been formally created in January 1974 and for archdiocesan purposes were attached to St Monica’s. The first months of the parish relied on the Giralang pioneers, as housing construction in Kaleen started later. Giralang parishioners have been integral to the spiritual and practical life of the parish which was often described locally as “St Michael’s Kaleen-Giralang”. The first Mass was celebrated on 7 November 1976 at the new presbytery in Powlett Street. Sunday Masses were soon celebrated at Kaleen Primary School in Ashburton Circuit. On commencement of classes at the new St Michael’s primary school in February 1982 all Masses were celebrated in the school hall. Weekday masses were in the small annex at the back of the hall. In 1990 St Michael’s Church was opened. The foundation stone was blessed by Archbishop Carroll on 13 May 1990 and the dedication took place on 8 December 1990. The church and presbytery are adjacent to St Michael’s school, with easy and safe access between school and church. The house at Powlett Street was sold in February 1991. A young St Michael’s parish thrived, but reflecting its suburbs the demographics slowly changed. From a peak of 156 Baptisms in 1982-83, St Michael’s saw only 18 Baptisms in 2016-17.
