Walking & Whisky A Tour of Southwest Scottish Islands May 27 through June 7, 2021 Our journey will start with a short jaunt to Kennacraig from Glasgow Airport, where we will board the MV Finlaggan and sail directly to our home for the next 4 nights, Port Askaig on Islay. We will take a rest stop en route in Inverary where we can visit one of Scotland’s most iconic castles. Once in Islay we will have almost 4 full days to play. The Isle of Islay is also called Queen of the Hebrides. With 9 working whisky distilleries, the stunning scenery, amazing wildlife and all the friendly people, Islay is a five-star destination. By the way, the proper pronunciation for Islay is Eye-la. We are coinciding our journey to be on Islay for Feis Ile, the island’s festival of music and malt. Time to dance, drink fine whisky and sample the amazing culture of this island rich with 9000 years of human history. Walking & Whisky A Tour of Southwest Scottish Islands May 27 through June 7, 2021 Islay is an island of pilgrimage for the world-wide single malt whisky faithful and no trip would be complete without a visit to a distillery or …. 7. Islay is teaming with history. Perhaps you would enjoy seeing some of the standing stones, covered cairns, Scotland’s finest and earliest example of a carved stone Christian cross at Kildalton. Islay has some of the most beautiful coastal hiking, lends itself to magnificent vistas from the helm of a sea kayak or a beautiful hike around the Mull of Oa. And don’t forget, we will be in Islay for their wonderful festival of Malt and Music, Feis Ile. Where we will be attending their opening Ceilidh and will have the opportunity to enjoy festivities galore over our 4 days on the Queen of the Isles. Walking & Whisky A Tour of Southwest Scottish Islands May 27 through June 7, 2021 Our tour will take us to beautiful Campbletown on the Mull of Kyntire. Once proclaimed ‘the whisky capital of the world’ with 34 distilleries, today only three active distilleries remain in the town: Glen Scotia, Glengyle and Springbank. Located on a deep bay sheltered by Davaar Island and the surrounding hills, it is an ideal base for exploring the many attractions of scenic southern Kintyre. Famous throughout the world from Paul McCartey’s song, the Mull of Kintyre is a beautiful area, combining rugged cliffs and coastline facing the North Atlantic, with secluded and often deserted, golden sandy beaches. Enjoying a special climate all of its own, as evidenced by the many palm trees growing out in the open. Stunning all round views include a panorama which stretches from the Clyde and the islands of Arran and Ailsa Craig, past the Antrim coast of Northern Island, a mere 12 miles away, and then further past Rathlin Island to the western Hebridean Islands. Walking & Whisky A Tour of Southwest Scottish Islands May 27 through June 7, 2021 Kintyre is never short on paths to explore. From the Mull of Kintyre, with its panoramic views of Northern Ireland, to the mountains of Bein Ghuilean overlooking Campbeltown, an ocean walk down Westport Beach, and to the historic caves of Davaar Island, Kintyre never leaves you wanting for sites to see. Campbeltown was once a thriving malt whisky region of no fewer than 34 distilleries – no mean feat for a small remote settlement at the bottom of the long Kintyre peninsula. Now only 3 remain but they produce five distinctive malts between them. Savor the area’s seafood, hauled fresh from the surrounding waters. Feast on beef and lamb from the local farms and discover a host of artisan products including jams, sweets and ice cream. Or, just kick back and enjoy the views from this unique peninsula, beautiful fishing village and palm tree strewn shoreline. Walking & Whisky A Tour of Southwest Scottish Islands May 27 through June 7, 2021 The next leg of this epic journey will take us to one of our favorite islands in all of Scotland, Arran. Described as Scotland in miniature you can see it all in less than 200 square miles. It's a place where you can find a little bit of everything you'd ever want from a Scottish island; an ever-changing coastline, dramatic mountain peaks, sheltered beaches, verdant forests, great cultural festivals and a wealth of tasty local produce. Get the adrenalin pumping as you try some thrilling outdoors adventure activities, such as gorge walking, rock climbing or eve sea kayaking and uncover hidden waterfalls, plunge pools, natural slides, rugged peaks, coastal crags and pretty coves. Or perhaps, explore the fascinating Bronze Age remnants of the Machrie Moor Stone Circles on the west coast of the island, near Blackwaterfoot, and enjoy the short walk to the site. Walking & Whisky A Tour of Southwest Scottish Islands May 27 through June 7, 2021 Our time here will be whatever you make of it. Hike the majestic peaks. Plunge the gorges and mountain rivers.
