Overview of the Japan Association of Radiological Technologists The Japan Association of Radiological Technologists, a public interest incorporated association under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, was established in 1947 with the purpose of contributing to the health of citizens through raising the professional ethics of members, improving and furthering the study of medical radiology and medical radiological technology, and enhancing public health. In light of the startling progress being made in the fields of image diagnostics and radiation therapy where radiological technologists work, it is necessary to stay constantly aware of the latest know-how and technology. JART collaborates with other certifi cation agencies to enhance the capacity of all radiological technologists in general through providing lifelong learning seminars, short courses, academic conferences and numerous other learning opportunities. We believe that such activities constitute our obligation as medical professionals to the general public. As the only medical profession that has “radiological” in its name, we strive to limit medical exposure, to raise the standing of our profession, and to realize a profession of specialist technologists that can be advertised. And we are committed to promoting services with you all for the provision of safe and secure medical care. general principles We will render our services to those in need of health care. We will act as individual members of a health care team. We will perform our duties in our fi eld of specialty. We will continue to study for the benefi t of mankind. We will respect and practice the policy of informed consent. 2 ◆ Journal of JART English edition 2015 foreword On Issue of Our English Language Journal Yasuo Nakazawa (President) The Japan Association of Radiological Technologists, to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the discovery of X-ray, has issued a selection of articles considered to be particularly useful to radio- logical technologists throughout the world. These have been selected from the latest contributions to “Journal of JART(JJART)” – the academic journal for radiological technologists in Japan. The contents of “JJART” have three major features. First, they serve to advertise lifelong education seminars to members in order to provide high quality medical technologies in collaboration with cit- izens and medical professionals. Second, they comprise articles on clinical radiological technology research that is routinely conducted by members. And third, they comprise articles that are contrib- uted by members and non-members based on medical science and technology. Approximately 30,000 copies of the journal are issued every month. Now, to give the worldʼs radiological technologists some general idea of the work of their coun- terparts in Japan, I would like to briefl y describe the history of the Japan Association of Radiological Technologists. It was established in 1947 as part of the effort to enact a national examination for ra- diological technologists. Subsequently, it worked together with the government, National Diet, Japan Medical Association, and the Allied Occupation authorities in forming consent on the national exam- ination. Thanks to the tireless efforts soaked in the blood, sweat and tears of our founding mem- bers, the Act on Medical Radiographers was promulgated with the passing of Law No. 226 in June 1951. After that, responding to the needs of the age, the Act on Medical Radiographers was revised in 1968; the Act on Radiological Technologists and the Act on Medical Radiographers underwent partial revision in 1983, resulting in unifi cation of the profession under the present Act on Radiolog- ical Technologists. The work of radiological technologists at this time comprised general X-ray ex- aminations, X-ray TV examinations, angiographic examinations, X-ray CT examinations, RI examina- tions, and radiation therapy. Furthermore, the Act on Radiological Technologists was revised in 1993, making it possible for them to perform MRI examinations, ultrasonic examinations, and non-mydriatic fundus photographic examinations. In 2010, the work of radiological technologists was expanded to include assistance in the image diagnostic interpretation, and explanation and counseling related to radiological examinations. And in April 2015, activities will be further expand- ed to include intravascular injection of contrast media using an automatic contrast media infusion device, needle removal and stopping of bleeding, lower digestive tract examinations (anal insertion of catheter and infusion of contrast media), anal insertion of catheter and air suction during radio- logical treatment. The Japan Association of Radiological Technologists is committed to expanding the work of radio- logical technologists based on scientifi c backing. We will continue to introduce the clinical, educa- tion, and research achievements of radiological technologists in “JJART” and strive to enhance its contents. I hope that this English language journal will be a useful resource for radiological technol- ogists throughout the world. foreword ◆ 3 The Japan Association of Historyof Radiological Technologists (JART) 1947 1979 ・ Establishment of JART (July 13) ・ Completion of the Education Center for JART 1951 ・ Promulgation of the Act on Medical Radiog- 1983 raphers (June 11) ・ Partial revision of the Act on Medical Radi- ・ Authorization for Establishment of the Japan ographers and the Act on Radiological Tech- Association of Radiographers (June 13) nologists (unification of the professions) 1954 1985 ・ th ・ First national examination for Medical Radi- Event to commemorate the 90 anniversary ographers (May 30) of the discovery of X-rays, attended by Her Imperial Highness Princess Chichibunomiya 1956 ・ Staging of the 1st Japan Conference of Radio- ・ Event to commemorate the 10th anniversary logical Technologists of founding, attended by Her Imperial High- ness Princess Chichibunomiya 1987 ・ General assembly resolution for establish- 1962 ment of the New Education Center and a ・ Event to commemorate the 15th anniversary four-year university of founding and 10th anniversary of enact- ment of the Act on Medical Radiographers, 1989 attended by Her Imperial Highness Princess ・ Completion of the New Education Center Chichibunomiya (Suzuka City) 1968 1991 ・ Promulgation of the Act to Partially Revise ・ Opening of Suzuka University of Medical the Act on Medical Radiographers (establish- Science ment of two professions) (May 23) 1993 ・ First national examination for radiological ・ The Act to Partially Revise the Act on Radi- technologists ological Technologists, and Ministerial Or- 1969 dinance to Partially Revise the Enforcement ・ Renaming as the JART Orders (April 28) ・ Staging of the 4th International Society of Ra- 1994 diographers & Radiological Technologist (IS- ・ Appointment of the President of JART as the RRT) World Congress at Tokyo Palace Hotel, 11th President of ISRRT attended by Her Imperial Highness Princess Chichibunomiya

Insignificance Given Meaning: The Literature of Kita Morio DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Masako Inamoto Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Professor Richard Edgar Torrance Professor Naomi Fukumori Professor Shelley Fenno Quinn Copyright by Masako Inamoto 2010 Abstract Kita Morio (1927-), also known as his literary persona Dokutoru Manbô, is one of the most popular and prolific postwar writers in Japan. He is also one of the few Japanese writers who have simultaneously and successfully produced humorous, comical fiction and essays as well as serious literary works. He has worked in a variety of genres. For example, The House of Nire (Nireke no hitobito), his most prominent work, is a long family saga informed by history and Dr. Manbô at Sea (Dokutoru Manbô kôkaiki) is a humorous travelogue. He has also produced in other genres such as children‟s stories and science fiction. This study provides an introduction to Kita Morio‟s fiction and essays, in particular, his versatile writing styles. Also, through the examination of Kita‟s representative works in each genre, the study examines some overarching traits in his writing. For this reason, I have approached his large body of works by according a chapter to each genre. Chapter one provides a biographical overview of Kita Morio‟s life up to the present. The chapter also gives a brief biographical sketch of Kita‟s father, Saitô Mokichi (1882-1953), who is one of the most prominent tanka poets in modern times.

Students at our university should strive to under- stand its meaning and make efforts to realize its significance. Creation" means finding new knowledge and theory and creating new methods, technolo- gies and products, as well as contributing to improved environmental and social wealth. It also pertains to the creation and fostering of excellent human resources. Integration” refers to the implementation of those ideas and resources into and for the ben- efit of humanity and society. Sendai is the launching point for these ideas and resources, destined to benefit all our future. The discipline of “Creation” requires diligent study and the capacity to constantly seek answers to the questions and issues that arise every day. The process of “Integration” has the potential to greatly affect people all around us, and so it requires the cultivation of a sensitive but flexible perspective. Tohoku Institute of Technology provides an environment in which students can and add to and enhance their abilities through these concepts of Creation and Integration.

Masako has been collecting and propagating indigenous wildflower seeds for over 30 years, and the species count amounts to nearly 80 at present. As some Japanese primula that are extinct in their natural habitat are in the collection, it also functions as a precious seed-bank of the area.
