Rightacres has already commenced construction on a 135,000 sq ft Grade A office building at One Central Square. Future developments within Central Square are planned to include further grade A office accommodation, a high quality residential tower, hotel and complimentary retail and leisure space, as well as a high quality urban and civic environment. A masterplan has been prepared by internationally renowned architects Foster + Partners, to ensure the redevelopment of Central Square creates a strong relationship with Network Rail’s upgrading and redevelopment plans for Central Station. Central Square will become Cardiff ’s prime office location and create a carefully planned and managed new centre for commerce in Wales. The Central Square Masterplan Area Vision Study was completed in October 2014, which covers circa 4.9 hectares (12 acres) and is edged in blue below. Central Square is set to incorporate circa 1.4 million sq ft of mixed use development including offices, hotel, residential and retail uses. A detailed planning application was submitted on 23rd December 2014 for the 2.5 hectare (6.18 acre) site, edged red, which contains the BBC Cymru Wales New Broadcasting House building and Plot 2 Central Square.

In the drive towards wholesale digitalisation and the accelerated introduction of an information society, this hitherto understated function is now deemed critical and comes to the fore. More specifically, recent public policy initiatives in the UK, culminating to the 2006 White Paper, openly assign the mission of contributing to the process of ‘building digital Britain’ to the BBC, the flagship public service broadcaster. This vision of digitalisation is defined in broad terms in the policy discourse, as involving all platforms indiscriminately. The BBC’s contribution, designed to entice users to a digital future and simultaneously cement the continued relevancy of the institution in the 21st century, finds expression in a variety of implemented and proposed digital services deliverable over a range of digital platforms, including television and radio, the internet and mobile networks. This paper seeks to interrogate the host of controversial and closely scrutinised internet services offered by the BBC in the light of the digital vision articulated in the public policy discourse. These services shift the emphasis away from the time-honoured broadcasting paradigm to a more interactive approach. Centre for Cultural Policy Research Department of Theatre, Film and Television University of Glasgow Glasgow G12 8QQ December 2008 © Caitriona Noonan, 2008 Abstract This thesis examines the way in which media professionals negotiate the occupational challenges related to television and radio production. It has used the subject of religion and its treatment within the BBC as a microcosm to unpack some of the dilemmas of contemporary broadcasting. In recent years religious programmes have evolved in both form and content leading to what some observers claim is a “renaissance” in religious broadcasting. However, any claims of a renaissance have to be balanced against the complex institutional and commercial constraints that challenge its long-term viability. This research finds that despite the BBC’s public commitment to covering a religious brief, producers in this style of programming are subject to many of the same competitive forces as those in other areas of production. Furthermore those producers who work in-house within the BBC’s Department of Religion and Ethics believe that in practice they are being increasingly undermined through the internal culture of the Corporation and the strategic decisions it has adopted. This is not an intentional snub by the BBC but a product of the pressure the Corporation finds itself under in an increasingly competitive broadcasting ecology, hence the removal of the protection once afforded to both the department and the output.
