After a number of disputes with Prince, Denise Matthews, also known as Vanity, the lead singer of Prince-created Vanity 6, fled the Prince entourage in 1983 to pursue solo endeavors recording with Motown Records and acting in films. She left open an acting position for the role written for her by Prince in the film Purple Rain. After a frantic casting call, the film's director met actress and model Patricia Kotero. Renamed by Prince as "Apollonia", Kotero stepped into Vanity's role in the film Purple Rain, as well as in the fragmented group, Vanity 6. The other two members of Vanity 6, Brenda Bennett and Susan Moonsie, joined Apollonia and reformed the group as Apollonia 6 for the film and one album. During this time it was rumored that Apollonia and Prince were romantically involved with one another, but it was later revealed that Apollonia was actually married. Her "relationship" with Prince had been more of a PR stunt for the film than anything serious. Apollonia 6 only had one hit with "Sex Shooter" in 1984. -
Keep on Moving: the Future Is Purple: Prince Is Leading Us Into Halloween
Keep On Moving: The Future Is Purple: Prince is leading us into Halloween I’m still coming down from watching Deer Tick’s John McCauley front Nirvana during the Foo Fighters’ encore at the CalJam Festival last weekend, but with wing and a shot of tequila, hopefully we can get through this. McCauley led surviving members of Nirvana through spot-on versions of “Serve the Servants,” “Scentless Apprentice” and “In Bloom” before yielding the mic to Joan freakin’ Jett who closed out the Nirvana set. It was surreal to see someone from Providence fronting what was the biggest band in the world during my youth, but when I closed my eyes, it was pure nirvana. Other CalJam highlights included: A set counting backward through their discography from Foo Fighters. An infectious punk rock squall from FEA who became one of my new favorite bands. A dose of hilariousness mixed with a shot of rock ‘n’ roll from Tenacious D. Deer Tick’s set, which featured a show-stopping version of “Mange” that made me finally realize why it is in the set every night. Garbage was phenomenal, capped by a version of “Only Happy When it Rains” that started like a torch-lit lounge number before catapulting and bringing the house down. Oh, and then there was Iggy Pop! The ageless Godfather of Punk led his Post-Pop Depression band, which included Josh Homme from Queens of The Stone Age, through a mix of tunes from their album together and from his late ’70s albums with David Bowie. One of the best festivals I’ve ever attended, hands down. -
Roots Report: I Need an Upgrade
Roots Report: I Need an Upgrade Okee dokee folks … I feel old. Most likely because I AM old. I am now rolling double nickels. YIKES! That was a loose reference to CB lingo from the ’70s — maybe someone will get it. When I play a gig with my band I feel like death the next day(s). Probably because I jump around like an idiot on stage and move a lot of equipment. My drug of choice is Aleve. Hardcore stuff, I know. I wish that I was much younger, maybe just turning 30 again. Things would be a lot easier because I would be more agile and flexible and all those Neil Young aerobics that I do on stage wouldn’t be as painful. Also, new music is much closer to what I like to play so maybe I could finally make it if I were a younger musician. I am not sure how I would fare being part of a younger generation, though. I am not very ironic. I do like that Millennials have a bit of a social conscious. And I already have a beard, though it is mostly grey and it’s a lot older than any Millennial. I also would have missed seeing some of the best bands that have ever existed and that I wouldn’t like very much. We live in a very disposable society. Everyone always wants the latest and greatest and is constantly upgrading and getting rid of the old. I am sure there will come a time in the future where we will be able to upgrade our bodies completely. -

Peep at Some Music,The Roots Report
The Roots Report: Sleepless Nights Okee dokee folks … The other night I watched a couple of music documentaries on Netflix. I have insomnia a lot, so this is what I do — watch Netflix. Anyway, one of them was a four-hour film about Tom Petty and the other was about Twisted “F*cking” Sister. I know, I know, Twisted Sister isn’t really in the scope of my column, but Petty is rootsy enough. Though I am not a huge Petty fan, I did see him in concert about 30 years ago and the movie made me appreciate him a bit more. As for Twisted Sister, I gained a whole new appreciation for them as musicians and performers, though I still really don’t like their music. It was interesting to learn how long and hard they worked, and how they stuck to their vision and didn’t give up on their dream even when success was ripped from their grasp several times. I appreciate stories like this. I can relate to the struggle. If you talk to any local performer they can surely tell you tales of accomplishment and disappointment in the music biz. While many do stick with it, many just get frustrated and give up. It can be VERY frustrating — bad gigs, low attendance, long drives, canceled shows, late nights, aching bodies, a lot of work for little dough and oodles of other fun stuff. The up side is that when you do have a great gig it is one of the best feelings you can have. -
