Lent 2020 Booklet Lent and Holy Week 2020 at the Cathedral of St John the Baptist Norwich Introduction from Canon Paul Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the solemn Lenten season, which helps us to prepare for the saving acts of Jesus celebrated in Holy Week, which lead us into the glorious celebration of the resurrection at Easter. No matter how many Lents we have celebrated in our lives, each one is a gift from God to help us deepen our faith and understanding of what it means to enter the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I would like to invite all of us this Lent to engage with our Lenten programme to help us make a prayerful preparation for our celebrations. Our Lenten devotions help us to do this through the traditional acts of prayer, penance, and almsgiving. Please do support the two charities which we will be collecting for this Lent: Aid to the Church in Need & SVP East Anglia. May God bless you, and help you keep a Holy Lent. Canon David Paul Cathedral Dean Ash Wednesday Wednesday 26th February "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" Ash Wednesday is a day of Fasting and Abstinence. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. We Abstain from eating meat on this day. Mass Times There will be blessing and distribution of Ashes at every Mass 7:30am Mass 9:40am Morning Prayer 10am Sung Mass 12:30pm Sung Mass 5pm Old Rite Latin Mass 7pm Solemn Sung Mass Rite of Election Sunday 1st March · 3:30pm This special Diocesan service with the Bishop is when those to be received into the Church at the Easter Vigil are enrolled. Stations of the Cross Fridays in Lent at 12:30pm and 7pm A Lenten soup lunch is available after the 12:30pm Stations, to raise money for Tambogrande. Scripture through Carmelite eyes This series of short reflections, led by Secular Carmelites, is intended to give a brief insight into how the words of Scripture profoundly influenced the lives and writings of Carmelite saints.     Welcome to Saints Alive For centuries the faith of our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers has been fashioned, refined, colored and intensified by the sheer variety and passion of the lives of the great Christian saints. Their passions, their strengths and weaknesses, the immense variety of their lives have intrigued children young and old for ages. You may even have been named for a particular saint – Dorothy, Dolores, Anne or Elizabeth; Malachi, Francis or even Hugh. So why not celebrate some of those remarkable people through music? As we resume our trek along the Mission Road, we high- light music written in the Americas to celebrate the life and work of our city’s patron saint, Francis, as well as the lives and mission of other men and women venerated by the great musical masters. Saint Cecilia, patroness of music, is very much alive and present in a setting of “Resuenen los cla- rines” by the Mexican Sumaya. Bassani, an Italian who thrived in Bolivia when it was still called Upper Peru, pays homage to Saint Joseph in a Mass setting bearing his name. Its blend of self-taught craftsmanship and mastery of orchestration is fascinating, intriguing, even jolly. It’s as if Handel and the young Mozart had joined hands, jumped on a boat and headed to the heart of South America. What a nice addition to our library! Chants taught by the zealous, mission-founding Sancho have been sent our way – chants in his own hand, no less. Ignatius Loyola is represented by three short motets (that’s almost too glamorous a name for them, they are more folkish in their style) from Bolivia.
