Yalamalle Article ID: AR1728b e-mail: [email protected] Received in 1st November, 2016 Received in revised form 20th November, 2016 Accepted in final form 26th November, 2016 Abstract The present study was aimed at determining the effect of augmented vernalization on the seed yield and seed yield contributing characters of onion seed crop. The experiment consisted of in vitro augmented vernalization at three different temperatures 0±0.5 °C, 5 ± 0.5 °C and 10±0.5 °C for durations 10, 20, 30 or 40 days and two levels of GA3 at 500 PPM and 1000 PPM in two short day onion varieties- Bhima Kiran and Bhima Super. Bulbs stored at 10 °C for 10 days and 0 °C for 30 days pre-planting produced plants that flowered 11.64 days and 6.44 days earlier than non-vernalized plants in variety Bhima Kiran and Bhima Super respectively. Augmented vernalization resulted in increase of number of scape plant-1. Kharif harvested variety Bhima Super had highest increase in flowering (56%) where as rabi harvested variety Bhima Kiran variety reported 30 % increase in flowering over control. Bulb treatment with GA3 did not increase the flowers nor yield, major- ity of the plants appeared showed stunted growth. Indicating the non suitability of GA3 as a bulb treating hormone.

Central Asia is the center of origin for many Allium species and a rich genetic source of wild relatives of onion and garlic. For this reason germplasm collections of cultivated Alliums have targeted the acquisition of seed and bulb samples from this region, and several plant expeditions from Asia, Europe, and North America have collected Allium germplasm in Central Asia. Central Asian Allium germplasm has been valuable both as raw materials for scientifi c research leading to published data, and as starting materials for genetic improvement of the crop. Utilizing this germplasm it has been possible to improve garlic so it can be bred like other seed-propagated crops. Several interspecifi c crosses have been made between onion and other Central Asian wild relatives and these crosses have yielded useful traits for onion improvement. Allium germplasm from this region has also been important in elucidating the systematics and origins of diversity in onion and garlic. By any of these measures, Central Asian Allium collections have been valuable. Challenges and successes in collecting, maintaining, evaluating, and using these collections remain. Plant germplasm is the basic building mate- plant exploration to expand collections. In a proposal was made by the author, approved rial used by plant breeders for crop improvement. the 1980s, the Root and Bulb Vegetable CGC and funded by the USDA to collect wild Allium The variation provided by diverse germplasm recommended that the NPGS Allium collection from the center of diversity of this valuable genus.
