BIKERS CONVOY TO CHILDREN'S WARD On 15th April, the annual bikers Easter Egg run to the Padua Children's ward at the William Harvey Hospital, Ashford took place. The bikers run saw around 200 bikers from all over Kent gather in the sunshine on the hottest day of the year, at the Halfway House pub at Challock. At 2pm, led by Hothfield couple Brian and Eileen Johns, who have been organising the event for over ten years, they left in convoy to bring cheer to young patients in hospital over the Easter holiday period. The convoy was escorted by a police car, with motorcycle marshals from Folkestone alongside and AHBS hospital radio provided the safety car at the rear of the convoy. Once at the Eileen and Brian Johns hospital, they were met by hospital play specialists Niki Wakefield and Jane not only with the set-up there but with Bill Caw said, ‘This is a great start to McReadie who were on hand with the dedication and enthusiasm of the the year and we are delighted that cool drinks in the hospital foyer, before volunteers who run the radio station. RADIO TYNESIDE AND WHERE ARE ALL THE WOMEN? HOSPITAL BROADCASTING WEEK Lucy Harrison from Norwich has just applied to become a member of Hospital Radio Yare. Chairman Peter Burrage, was especially pleased to have a woman join the team of presenters because over recent years female volunteers have become a little thin on the ground. After Elayne Guest retired at the AGM in early March, the only remaining female presenter was Brenda Godbold, who asked for a recruitment drive to bring more women into the organisation. Brenda has been a valued member for seven years and is kept busy with the Children’s Show every Friday afternoon and co- producing the Music From The 80’s Show on a Sunday evening. Since then, there have been four applications for membership from men and only one from a woman. In the past there have been more women presenters and in recent years there have been three women who have held the Chair. 24 year old Lucy Harrison has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Radio, Film and Television and is looking forward to gain practical experience with a real audience. Her speciality at University was radio and she was surprised to see Radio Yare using similar equipment to that she had trained on. HR READING’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR Hospital Radio Reading will be 50 years old on 7th September and are planning a two week long celebration either side of the actual date of the anniversary. Celebrations will include a two-week special broadcast and a party for members past and present on Saturday, 8th September. Those of you who attended the Spring conference may have seen this gold Jaguar in the car park, which will be used throughout the year to promote the celebrations. The car will be in attendance at as many of HRR’s fundraising events as possible. It is also hoped to arrange to visit a few of the other HR stations in the local area during the year, maybe on some of their special or fundraising events. This should gain some useful publicity for both HRR and the station [email protected] in our celebrations over the weekend of being visited. with the details of where and when September 7th to 9th , either on the If you would like to try and arrange and I’ll try and attend as many as I can. ‘phone or in person, is invited to get for a visit to your station (within We would also love to hear from back in touch. reasonable travelling distance of any past members of HRR who are still Norman Bland, Studio Manager Reading) please e-mail broadcasting. Well what a super conference at the Park Inn, Northampton. The hotel and its staff were so helpful – it was good to see so many of you there and thank you for your support both of conference and the Awards. I and my colleagues on the EC have received some lovely comments from you – thank you. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone involved in organising absolutely anything in connection with the conference and the Awards – so much work goes on behind the scenes and it really is appreciated. There were some excellent seminars and the Trade show was very well supported. Goodies had a grand sale at conference and thanks to those who supported it. The stock needed to be cleared and that well and truly happened, although there is still some left which needs to go – watch this space. Many congratulations to all winners of awards and to Station of the Year – Hospital Radio Perth. I hope Hospital Radio week was busy and successful for you all. I have not had a chance to visit stations during the past few weeks, with the exception of Luton, who were having an open day. It was good to be there again and to meet many past and present members. Life has been a little hectic preparing to move house and even though it is not completed I have many visits booked during the next few weeks including Kings Lynn, Birmingham, Chelmsford and Guildford. So I look forward to seeing members in those stations soon and to preparing lots more visits in the summer. I am delighted that I am still receiving lots of request for Long Service certificates – do keep them coming. We really do regard the certificates as an important opportunity to thank members for their hard work, dedication and commitment to hospital radio. To date this year, 115 certificates have been produced, many of these being for 35 and 40 years. So, many congratulations to all those who have received their certificates and a big thank you for all you do for your stations. Requests for Station Awards for long service have started to come in, this was introduced at Autumn conference and I think it really is a good way of recognising stations for what they are doing. Perhaps I can remind you that you need to apply to me for certificates which will be available on completion of 10, 20, 30, 40, 60 years. However, for 25 and 50 years, stations will be presented with a plaque inscribed with their logo. The plaques are produced by Dave Nicholson. The rules are that the HBA present these awards which can be at either Autumn Conference at Sunday lunch, Regional Meeting or at an event at your station – whichever you feel the most appropriate for you. I look forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, June you may photocopy this form
