This is extremely saddening. For starters, MLK didn’t just fight a single injustice, he wasn’t a single issue person, and injustice isn’t a single issue matter. Never being silent was MLK’s life’s work, and it is our obligation. I know that most people here, hopefully almost everyone here, in my dreams everyone here, understands this already, but let me clarify our position. We are against ALL exploitation, discrimination, needless violence, abuse, theft, and slaughter. All of it. In times of human strife, as now, our job is to find respectful, creative ways to seize the moment to call for an overarching view, to reinforce the principle of opposition to all oppression, not abandon those who are in the margins at the best of times. Our mission is to get people to think about the harm caused by any form of discrimination, and how all forms of it are one thing. The “who you are” is not important. You don’t have to be Japanese to know internment camps were wrong; you don’t have to be a hippopotamus to protest captivity; men must fight sexism and racial injustice must be decried by people of every race. Using race as a reason to be quiet is actually racist, and if we start finding it too awkward to try to advance the cause of understanding for all, we might as well not just shut up but shut up shop.

    The Effects of Social Media on Participation Levels, Contentious Activity, and Organizational Issues in the Animal Protection Movement Catherine Becker Rural Sociology 5500 Linda Lobao November 14, 2012 1 Introduction The animal protection movement is widely regarded to have begun with the publication of Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation in 1975. The book, which argues for extending the utilitarian concept of the “greatest good” to include animals, sold 250,000 copies by 19881 and half a million copies by the turn of the 21st century.2 The early 1980s saw the founding of several notable animal rights organizations including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals by Ingrid Newkirk and Alex Pacheco in 1980, In Defense of Animals by Elliot Katz in 1982, the American branch of Animal Liberation Front in 1982, and Animal Legal Defense Fund by Joyce Tischler in 1984.3 At the same time, national humane organizations that had already been established began to see record growth. The Humane Society of the United States, founded in 1954, added 100,000 new members a year from 1984 to 1988, reaching half a million members by 1988.4 Today the HSUS claims to have 11 million members and supporters, 1 in every 28 Americans.5 Meanwhile, the number of groups dedicated to protecting animals has also grown. “There is no animal whose troubles do not matter to someone. Name any species and it has its defenders,” says Wayne Pacelle, president of the HSUS, who estimates there are now more than 10,000 organizations devoted to helping animals in the United States.6 The “first wave” of animal rights activism was marked by confrontational tactics such as splashing red paint on people wearing fur coats, disrupting conferences of biomedical researchers, and breaking into research labs to remove animal subjects.

    Course outline for RLG 227H1S, Religion and Animals Department for the Study of Religion, University of Toronto Instructor: Paul York Course description This course examines animals in myths, legends, parables, and how animals figure into religious and cultural identities. It also examines the intersection of religious cosmologies, mythology, religious art, religious imagination, animal ethics, and environmental problems. The topic of religion and animals is a growing field of religious studies. Animals appear in numerous myths, legends and parables, as anthropomorphized symbols of human traits, as bearers of moral instruction, as agents of supernatural powers, and as divine messengers. Such questions as how to treat them properly and how human beings differ from them have helped define religious and cultural identities for millennia. In recent years scholars of religion have begun to bring together this corpus of material under a unified subject heading: religion and animals. This course provides an overview of that field, as well as trying to address some complex social and environmental problems that animals play a significant role in. As such it engages with the theories that underpin the animal liberation movement, which has been highly critical of the positioning of the animals within religions traditions. The course also exposes students to emerging theologies within many of the major traditions that argues for animal liberation as consistent with the tradition’s values. At the same time, the course provides counterviews to these theologies, and examines them through a system of ethical hermeneutics for interpreting scriptures. A recurring theme in the course is the tension within historical traditions with regard to animal welfare, as identified by Paul Waldau (see the Addendum to the Course Description, at the end of this document, for a longer description of this topic).
