Monday Mar 30th COK Talks with Peter Singer Regarded as the “father of the modern animal movement,” Princeton philosophy professor and world-renowned ethicist Peter Singer has challenged our attitudes towards and treatment of nonhuman animals for nearly 30 years. The author of such important works as How Are We to Live: Ethics in an Age of Self Interest, One World: The Ethics of Globalization, Animal Factories with Jim Mason, Practical Ethics, and, of course, Animal Liberation, amongst many others, Peter Singer’s writings have inspired countless individuals into action for the liberation of animals. 1. Since you first wrote Animal Liberation in 1975, the number of animals killed has increased dramatically. Why do you think this is and do you see the total amount of animal suffering reducing any time soon? Certainly the number of animals killed has increased, because there are far more people able to afford to buy Photo by Marion Singer meat, especially in Asia. Regrettably, they want to buy meat and so more animals are killed. In Europe, I’d say that the intensity of animal suffering has lessened, slightly, because of better regulations both for farm animals and for animals used in research. And the prospect there is for further improvements, which is encouraging. (See Outlawed Other COK Sites in Europe, ari-online.org.) I hope that the rest of the world will follow Europe’s example. But it’s going to take time, unfortunately. 2. In your opinion, what has been the most important victory for the animal movement? In the last 30 years, I’d put at the top Henry Spira’s successful campaign to stop experiments on cats at the American Museum of Natural History. -

Historical and current prevention measures for avoiding these problems, such as sanctions, taxes, or responsibility education, have failed to provide significant moderation or resolution. Globally, millions of pets are commercially and privately bred and abandoned annually, damaging biodiversity and ecosystems, and presenting road safety and public health risks, in addition to becoming victims of hardship, abuse, and illegal trafficking, especially in the case of exotic species. This article proposes a novel comprehensive management system for amelioration of overpopulation and abandonment of pets by using greater control of supply and demand of the pet market, highlighting the role of the compulsory owner liability insurance to prevent pet abandonment and all its associated costs. This system aims to act preventatively, through flexible protocols within the proposed management system to be applied to any pet and any country. Broiler Chickens
The Life of: Broiler Chickens Chickens reared for meat are called broilers or broiler chickens. They originate from the jungle fowl of the Indian Subcontinent. The broiler industry has grown due to consumer demand for affordable poultry meat. Breeding for production traits and improved nutrition have been used to increase the weight of the breast muscle. Commercial broiler chickens are bred to be very fast growing in order to gain weight quickly. In their natural environment, chickens spend much of their time foraging for food. This means that they are highly motivated to perform species specific behaviours that are typical for chickens (natural behaviours), such as foraging, pecking, scratching and feather maintenance behaviours like preening and dust-bathing. Trees are used for perching at night to avoid predators. The life of chickens destined for meat production consists of two distinct phases. They are born in a hatchery and moved to a grow-out farm at 1 day-old. They remain here until they are heavy enough to be slaughtered. This document gives an overview of a typical broiler chicken’s life. The Hatchery The parent birds (breeder birds - see section at the end) used to produce meat chickens have their eggs removed and placed in an incubator. In the incubator, the eggs are kept under optimum atmosphere conditions and highly regulated temperatures. At 21 days, the chicks are ready to hatch, using their egg tooth to break out of their shell (in a natural situation, the mother would help with this). Chicks are precocial, meaning that immediately after hatching they are relatively mature and can walk around. -

The Home Flock The development and management of a small flock of chickens for the production of eggs and meat is a favorite activity of many rural families. This publication addresses many topics that the beginning poultry owner will eventually confront. These topics include: • Start With Healthy Chicks • Preparing the Brooder House • Brooding Chicks • Management of Broiler Chicks • Feeding Schedules • Pullet Rearing • Vaccination Program • Lighting Programs • Layer Management • Roosters • Disease and Parasite Control • Care of Eggs Start With Healthy Chicks The "Home Flock" usually consists of 20 to 40 chickens kept to supply eggs and an occasional fat hen. An average family of five persons will require about 30 hens. To produce 30 pullets, start with 100 straight-run chicks or 50 sexed pullet chicks. Pullet chicks should be purchased if only layers are desired. Chicks can be started at any time during the year. Baby chicks started in March or April are normally the easiest to raise up to laying age (6 months). The problem with starting birds then is that they begin production in late summer or early fall. Birds started in March or April generally do not lay as many total eggs as do birds started in November and begin production in April. The disadvantage of starting birds in November is that they are harder to raise through the winter months to laying age in April. Usually the most desirable birds for a small flock are dual-purpose breeds such as Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks or Plymouth Rocks. However, if birds are to be kept for egg production only, it is best to choose birds bred only for that purpose (White Leghorn or Leghorn crosses). -

Thibodeau, pm, Ph.D.* Writer-in-Residence, Department of English, Rivier University Today, more animals suffer at human hands than at any other time in history. It is therefore not surprising that an intense and controversial debate is taking place over the status of the 60+ billion animals raised and slaughtered for food worldwide every year. To keep up with the high demand for meat, industrialized nations employ modern processes generally referred to as “factory farming.” This article focuses on factory farming in the United States because the United States inaugurated this approach to farming, because factory farming is more highly sophisticated here than elsewhere, and because the government agency overseeing it, the Department of Agriculture (USDA), publishes abundant readily available statistics that reveal the astonishing scale of factory farming in this country.1 The debate over factory farming is often “complicated and contentious,”2 with the deepest point of contention arising over the nature, degree, and duration of suffering food animals undergo. “In their numbers and in the duration and depth of the cruelty inflicted upon them,” writes Allan Kornberg, M.D., former Executive Director of Farm Sanctuary in a 2012 Farm Sanctuary brochure, “factory-farm animals are the most widely abused and most suffering of all creatures on our planet.” Raising the specter of animal suffering inevitably raises the question of animal consciousness and sentience. Jeremy Bentham, the 18th-century founder of utilitarianism, focused on sentience as the source of animals’ entitlement to equal consideration of interests. -
