6 (25) December 2013– January 2014 Modernization: How to double The struggle proof of the service life for the Turkish efficiency of a turbine power market 16 18 26 Magazine about Russia’s Power Industry EnergY WITHOUT BORDERS No. 6 (25) December 2013– January 2014 Faster, stronger, and more efficient This is a good way to describe the pre-Olympic year for Russia’s power sector. Many events of 2013 will affect the future of the industry. Dear readers, rawing a line under the departing 2013, I would like to notice that the year was challenging and eventful for energy com- panies. So, the real challenge was the development of energy infrastructure for the XXII Winter Olympic Games that start in February in Sochi. The country’s energy companies coped with the task excellently, including Inter RAO Group, which commis- sioned Dzhubginskaya thermal power plant (TPP) and a number of other power facilities. This year also proved to be one of the peak years for the company in terms of commissioning new facilities under capacity delivery agreements. Overall, Inter RAO has commissioned 2.2 GW of capacity under CDAs, of which 500 MW have been put into operation from the beginning of 2013. According to expert forecasts, changes in the market rules, significant amendments to the law, high-profile dismissions and assignments, that shook the industry during the year, will greatly influence further development of the Russian energy sector. The focus of this Dissue is the review of the industry’s year results summarized by Sergey PIKIN, Director of the Energy Development Fund, who gave an exclusive interview to Energy Without Borders. Our experts shared their forecasts on the future of the energy industry in the Expert Club section. A considerable part of this issue is dedicated to modernization and innovation. Support- ing the implementation and adoption of innovative developments today is a guarantee of reliable and efficient operation of energy facilities tomorrow. For example, the Assembly Coating Center opened on the premises of the Kostromskaya TPP has adopted new technologies related to specific coating materials and coating methods that will enable, for example, to more than double the service life of turbine blades. This is one of the solutions to the rather pressing problem of heat and power equipment wear and tear. As always, on the pages of the Energy Without Borders magazine you will find local and global energy news, a financial analytical overview, and a schedule of the most impor- tant industry events for the coming two months. I wish you informative reading and we are looking forward to your feedback that you can send to the editor’s e-mail address: [email protected]. Let me also take this opportunity to congratulate all of you on the coming holiday, Pow- er Engineers’ Day, and wish you a Happy New Year! Truly yours, Editor-in-Chief Anton NAZAROV CONTENTS INNOVATION 18 Blade Running A unique innovative facility, Inter RAO – Assembly Coating Center, was launched at the Kostromskaya thermal power plant. Implementation of new 4 NEWS technologies using such operations as laser surface coating, high velocity flame spraying and ENERGY SECTOR plasma thermal spraying will enable to increase 8 the lifetime of power equipment manifold, in WORLDWIDE particular, double the service life of turbine blades. COVER STORY 10 INTERVIEW 20 «The Most Efficient 2013 Results Shall Survive» 2013 has marked many milestones of the last dec- ade for the Russian energy sector. Experts already forecast that many changes in the market game rules and positions of the key companies and play- ers, as well as personnel replacements will have a significant impact on further development of the sector. Read about the most important events, figures, quotes, and persons in our final summary of the passing year. POWER GENERATION 16 Add the Capacity The expert community of the electric power industry has been discussing the subsequent fate of the projects related to new construction of generation facilities after the completion of the capacity delivery agreement (CDA) program. Undoubtedly, construction needs to take place. However, upgrading the existing equipment may also become an efficient and economically sound solution. Despite the fact that 2013 has become one of the most eventful years over the last decade, Sergey PIKIN, Director of the Energy Development Fund, believes that the energy sector is still in need of systematic changes. In his interview with Energy Without Borders, Mr. PIKIN, a leading industry expert, summarizes the results of 2013 and the reform’s tenth anniversary, and talks about what should be done today to implement the outlined plans in the future. John A. Shanahan, Corresponding Author January 11, 2010 Dr. John P. Holdren Director, Office of Science & Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President Washington, D.C. Dear John, We met in Palo Alto, California in 1970, while you were working on your doctorate at Stanford University and I was starting an engineering career in nuclear power. You visited my family in Switzerland in the 1980s, where I was working on Nuclear Power Plant Leibstadt. You have also answered questions over the years on applications of Einstein‘s equations that is much appreciated. Nearly 40 years have passed. We are both still working to make genuine contributions through science and engineering for the lasting benefit of society and the planet. Please hear our statement and pass it on to the President. Peace on earth and preservation of the marvels of nature will not be achieved without a sound energy policy. This policy must include well-managed and well-governed slow- and fast-neutron nuclear power, recycling spent fuels and depleted uranium and possibly thorium. This was the goal of the founding scientists in the 1940s and still is the best way to a reliable and secure energy future. But the world is leaving us behind. At present, 58 new nuclear plants (including two fast reactors, one in Russia and one in India) are under construction in 14 countries. Of these, 20 are in China, 9 in Russia, 6 each in India and South Korea. Only one is in North America, and that is resumed work on a plant that was mothballed in 1988 when it was 80% finished.

AAAFM-UCLA, 2019 August Aug 19-22, 2019, UCLA Prof. Shuji Nakamura Nobel Prize in Physics (2014) Shuji Nakamura was born on May 22, 1954 in Ehime, Japan. He completed his B.E., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering at the University of Tokushima, Japan in 1977, 1979, and 1994, respectively. He joined Nichia Chemical Industries Ltd in 1979. In 1988, he spent a year at the University of Florida as a visiting research associate. In 1989 he started to research blue LEDs using group-III nitride materials. In 1990, he developed a novel MOCVD system for GaN growth that was named Two-Flow MOCVD. Using this system, he could grow the highest crystal quality GaN-based materials. From his perspective, the invention of Two-Flow MOCVD was the biggest breakthrouh in his life and his GaN-based research. In 1991, he obtained p-type GaN films by thermal annealing for the first time and could finally clarify the hydrogen passivation as a whole compensation mechanism. This hydrogen passivation of the acceptors had hindered the acquisition of p-type GaN films since the beginning of GaN research in the 1960s, carried out by many researchers. In 1992, he grew the first InGaN single crystal layers, which showed the first band-to-band emission in PL and EL at room temperature. These InGaN layers have been used for an emitting layer of all of the blue/green/white LEDs and all of the violet/blue/green semiconductor lasers. Without his invention of InGaN layers, there would have been no blue/green/white LEDs and no violet/blue/green semiconductor laser diodes.
