Publications Department Catalogue of Publications 2018 | 5778 The mandate of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities includes the publication of writings calculated to promote scholarship and science. Titles are selected on the basis of academic merit by an interdisciplinary Publications Committee composed of Academy members. Many of the Academy’s publications in the humanities are critical editions of manuscripts and source texts in Jewish history, the history of Jewish thought and religion, medieval Jewish and Islamic thought, Jewish languages, and related areas. Ernst Gombrich: Iconology and the ‘linguistics of the image’* Richard Woodfield At the turn of the millennium, Ernst Gombrich published a new preface to Art and Illusion. Unlike its predecessors it did not simply update his argument with new research but instead made a defence of his entire project. He argued that there was a fundamental difference between reading a text and responding to a figurative image and it lay in the different mental sets required for the two activities. Furthermore, he argued that in an age of new visual technologies it was absurd to argue that the illusionist image was a myth and there were not ways in which it could become instrumentally better. The difference between the early photograph and virtual reality lay in objective discoveries in the area of visual simulation. This line of argument was prompted by a body of criticism of his work that had emerged in England and America in the 80s, sparked off by Norman Bryson’s book The Vision and the Gaze: What the ancient Greeks called mimesis (the imitation of nature) has proved a difficult task: it took the artists of the ancient world some 250 years of systematic research to achieve this end, and artists of the Renaissance took the same time before they were able to eliminate what Albrecht Dürer called “falseness” in pictures. ...this commonsense interpretation of the history of Western art has recently been attacked on the ground that the whole idea of mimesis, truth to nature, is a will- o’-the-wisp, a vulgar error. There never was an image that looked like nature; all images are based on conventions, no more and no less than is language or the characters of our scripts. -

The first is the piecemeal approach, which tends to single out an element of Berlin’s thought (for example, his distinction between negative liberty and positive liberty) for exposition or criticism, leaving other elements unaccounted. And the second is the holistic approach, which pays attention to the overall structure of Berlin’s thought as a whole, in particular the relation between his defence for negative liberty and pluralism. This thesis is to defend the holistic approach against the piecemeal approach, but its interpretation will differ from the two representative readings, offered by Claude J. -

Gombrich and ‘Pictures that follow with their eyes’ G. D. Schott The A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts which Ernst Gombrich gave in Washington in 1956 included his observations on the illusion that a portrait’s gaze seems to follow the observer as the observer’s viewpoint changes.1 Four years later these lectures concerning ‘the psychology of pictorial representation’, together with various other of Gombrich’s contributions to the subject, formed the basis for his seminal work Art and Illusion.2 In this work he began to grapple with understanding this gaze-following illusion in the overall context of the perspectival changes in a picture seen from different viewpoints. Thus, under discussion here are objects which ‘appear to point out of the picture toward the observer’, contrasting with ‘the properties of the three-dimensional space depicted within the picture’ which have occupied many students of linear perspective ever since the Renaissance,3 and Gombrich was to take on the challenge of explaining both the geometrical and the perceptual issues which lie behind the illusion. Sometimes colloquially termed the Mona Lisa effect, ‘Pictures that follow with their eyes’4 had been a phenomenon known for millennia, and Gombrich cited both Pliny5 and Lucian6 as classical sources. World Art Histories and the Cold War*
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Directory of Open Access Journals World Art Histories and the Cold War* Robert Born Surveying the debates which have taken place over recent decades concerning the end of art or, respectively, the end of history, it is conspicuous that key contributions cluster around two points in time. In view of the eschatological import of these debates, it is of little surprise that the millennium marked one of these moments. The other, however, occurred more than a decade earlier and was shaped by the arguments of Arthur Danto and Hans Belting, both of whom took up Hegel’s notion of the end of art and developed it in different ways. Danto perceived a radical caesura in the blurring of the boundaries between art and everyday objects. This had been the leitmotif of Andy Warhol’s oeuvre, in the aftermath of which – Danto argued – the appreciation of art had increasingly become a matter of applied philosophy. This process inevitably restricts the cultural significance of art.1 Almost simultaneously, in 1983, Hans Belting posed his polemical question as to whether art history had come to its end. His text, based on the inaugural lecture he had delivered as professor in the history of art at Munich University, centred on the critique of art history as discipline which – according to him – had evaded the challenges of modern art and made little use of contemporary experiences. By placing more emphasis on these factors within the academic discourse, Belting hoped to gain new insights into the historical epochs of art.2 His concept of an ‘art history after the end of art history’ took shape in a more defined way over the ensuing decade, a process highlighted by the omission of the question mark on the cover of the revised edition, which he published in 1995. -

Boyer will be at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus on Thursday, May 2, to deliver the 18th Annual Kann Memorial Lecture. The title of Boyer’s presentation will be “Silent War and Bitter Peace: The Austrian Revolution of 1918.” The lecture will be held in the Wilkins Room, 215 Humphrey Institute, at 3:30. After a question and answer period, a reception will follow. Boyer is Martin A. Reyerson Distinguished Service Professor of History at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on politics and society in Central Europe (particularly the Habsburg Empire) from 1700-1918. He is internationally renowned for a pair of books, Political Radicalism in Late Imperial Vienna: Origins of the Christian Socialist Movemement, 1848-1897 (1981) and Culture and Political Crisis in Vienna: Christian Socialism in Power, 1897-1918 (1995). Both books explore the interplay between cultural communities and the fin-de-siècle politics of the imperial capital city. He is presently completing a book, Austria, 1867-1985, for the Oxford History of Modern Europe series. Boyer is also coeditor of the Journal of Modern History, a post he has held since 1980, and has been dean of The College, the University of Chicago’s undergraduate college, since 1992. Dubnov Department of History, Stanford University, 450 Serra Mall, Building 200, Stanford CA 94305, USA; E-Mail: [email protected] Received: 23 March 2012; in revised form: 28 March 2012 / Accepted: 31 March 2012 / Published: 13 April 2012 Abstract: This paper has two central aims: First, to reappraise Isaiah Berlin‘s political thought in a historically contextualized way, and in particular: to pay attention to a central conceptual tensions which animates it between, on the one hand, his famous definition of liberalism as resting on a negative concept of liberty and, on the other, his defense of cultural nationalism in general and Zionism in particular. Second, to see what do we gain and what do we lose by dubbing his philosophy Jewish. The discussion will proceed as follows: after describing the conceptual tension (Section 1), I will examine Berlin‘s discussion of nationalism and explain why comparisons between him and Hans Kohn as well as communitarian interpretations of him are incomplete and have limited merit. I will continue with a brief discussion of Berlin‘s Jewishness and Zionism (Section 3) and explain why I define this position ―Diaspora Zionism‖. The two concluding sections will discuss Berlin‘s place within a larger Cold War liberal discourse (Section 5) and why I find it problematic to see his political writings as part of a Jewish political tradition (Section 6). -

PLURALISM Abstract: Benjamin Constant (1767-1830) was one of the most famous liberal politicians and writers of the Bourbon Restoration in France (1814-1830). In 1814 and 1815, he wrote a number of notable works on constitutionalism. This article places these writings in their historical context, and summarizes Constant’s liberal pluralist constitutional philosophy. Constant insisted on the protection of rights, on a representative system of politics based on popular sovereignty, on the separation and balance of power, and on religious toleration. He worried about the destabilizing effects of “fanaticism,” and argued that a liberal constitutional regime would not endure unless citizens embraced a politics that permitted contestation, negotiation, and compromise. Keywords: Benjamin Constant, constitutionalism, liberalism, Boubon Restoration Benjamin Constant (1767-1830) was one of the most famous liberal politicians of the Bourbon Restoration (1814-1830), serving in the Chamber of Deputies 1819- 1822 and 1824-1830. He participated frequently in the debates that took place on the floor of the Chamber,1 devoted his considerable energy to organizational activities of the Liberal Opposition,2 and wrote hundreds of journal articles.3 He referred to politics as his “vocation” and clearly enjoyed his public role.4 1 Discours de M. Belief that all questions, including those of morals and politics, can be answered with absolute certainty, like those of science and mathematics, by correct use of reason or correct observation of nature. Rousseau formulates the basic proposition of Communism, Fascism and all other totalitarian orders, namely that if one is sure that one has the correct solution to the questions ‘How should men live?’ and ‘How should society be organised?’ one can, in the name of reason, impose it ruthlessly on others, since if they are rational they will agree freely; if they do not agree, they are not rational. This denies that different ideals of life, not necessarily altogether reconcilable with each other, are equally valid and equally worthy. II In the eighteenth century men believed that it was rational to seek liberty, equality and fraternity. Mr Stephen said that these were three beautiful but incompatible ideals. The belief that equality and liberty, however unlimited, are compatible is the basis of all anarchist theories, and liberalism is merely a watered-down version of this. But we now know that liberty, if not restrained, leads to inequality, and equality, if rigidly carried through, must lead to loss of liberty. This is the lesson of the nineteenth century, of which Communism denies the truth. III Doctrines divide into those which idealise liberty and those which idealise equality. The pro-liberty school wishes to leave the State as little power as possible, the equality school as much as possible.
