Versions, Dubs and Riddims: Dub and the Transient Dynamics of Jamaican Music
Versions, Dubs and Riddims: Dub and the Transient Dynamics of Jamaican Music Feature Article Thomas Vendryes Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (France) Abstract Dub emerged in Jamaica in the early 1970s, and, for a decade, it became a prolific and intensely innovative dimension of Jamaican popular music. Yet, during the mid- 1980s, while dub flourished at the international level, influencing popular music in general, the genre of dub declined in popularity in Jamaica. How could this musical innovation, so evidently associated with Jamaica, expand and develop internationally while at the same time decline in Jamaica itself? In this paper, I explore the modalities and evolution of Jamaican music production and consumption. Through a description of the Jamaican music industry context, with reference to individual artists’ paths and a summary of Jamaican dub production, I show that even as the Jamaican music milieu was highly favorable to the emergence of dub, dub proliferated as a genre only by developing ties to a diaspora of international audiences and practitioners. Keywords: production studies, Jamaican popular music, history of dub, audio-engineer, riddim, performance mixing Thomas Vendryes is Associate Professor at the Department of Social Sciences of the École Normale Supérieure de Cachan and researcher at the Centre d’Économie de la Sorbonne (France). His research focuses on socio-economic change in developing countries. Martin Pfleiderer (Hamburg) Riddim & Sound. Dub Reggae Und
Martin Pfleiderer (Hamburg) Riddim & Sound. -

America had the garages, the basements, the small suburban clubs. Britain had the pubs. Britain's renaissance originated from the musicians who had been playing rhythm and blues and rockabilly in the pubs. The story was not all too different from what happened in the Sixties, when blues clubs kept alive the flame that the "teen idols" and Merseybeat almost killed. In the Seventies something similar happened again. While the charts were ruled by decadent stars like David Bowie and countless mainstream pop singers, the clubs were staging rhythm and blues amateurs who were playing far more exciting music. Punk-rock changed the face of the industry and, indirectly, helped these musicians get out of the pubs. From the punk civilization there emerged a new kind of singer-songwriter, solidly anchored to the roots of rock'n'roll and aware of social issues. Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, and Tom Robinson, not to mention the demented Ian Dury and the even more demented Wreckless Eric, were the bards who launched a more sincere and vibrant approach to rock and roll. -

Natty Mark, the founder of The Dub, has begun a new magazine called IZIBONGO, which is focused on contemporary African Art. At the time of writing, there are now 18 issues, each one centred on a different artist. I have been in contact with our regular contributors and I am delighted to have been sent pieces from a number of them, which bodes well for the future. -
INRI Magazine Debut Edition
Edition No.1 I NEGUS RECORDS INTERNATIONAL March 2020 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION Bless~sed Rastafari Greetings ~ How good and how pleasant it is to give th~ahnks & praises through works and Service. I an I say the highest form of Praises is to be productive. It is with great pleasure that I present to our community this new cultural magazine which is a continuation of the works and brand known as I Negus Records International (INRI) currently in the public domain as a record label. This new publication represents the literary aspect and development of INRI which has been in the realms of creative imagination for some time, but now through the inspiration and timing of the Most High, manifests through the realms of the physical senses into reality. This debut edition has two sections. The Spritual/Practical section & The Musical Section. The INRI record label was formed in the year 2000 as the vehicle through which my vocal recordings with various producers and players of instruments could be released into the public domain. My music works as Cos Tafari has received much attention over previous years and has been welcomed in many countries. We give thanks for the appreciation. However, much literary works have been written and archived for many years, seemingly awaiting the ‘instruction’ to release more widely into our communities following a limited edition release of a Poetry booklet in 1999 entitled ‘The Fire & The Flames’ and another entitled ‘Tafar’ which is a Rasta-logical interpretation of the Ethiopian book of Genesis. Over the intervening years much work has been accomplished in the realms of Radio interviewing and presenting, video interviewing, music releases and Rastafari Exhibits in Ethiopia, Jamaica and London. -
