  • 1 on the Church Dr. Stan Fleming Introduction the Word Church
On The Church Dr. Stan Fleming Introduction The word church: Somebody once said, “The world at its worst needs the church at its best.” 1 I. What is the Church? A. If you look up the word in a dictionary it might be defined as “a building that is used for Christian religious services”. The Greek word Kruiakon means “the Lord’s house” and the word church is associated with that, but it is also associated with the Greek word Ekklesia which means “the called out ones”. In the country of Greece, Ekklesia meant the idea of citizens called to assemble for legislative or other community purposes. 2 B. Strong’s (1577) ekklesia; a calling out , a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both): - assembly, church. C. Current statistics on congregations and denominations 1. 4,629,000 Christian congregations 2. 44,000 denominations D. Mentioned in the New Testament 1. Church – 80 times 2. Churches – 37 times E. Old Testament concepts 1. Old Testament concepts: assembly, congregation; though the word synagogue is a New Testament word, the concept of the meeting places of Jews is in the Old Testament (Psalm 74:8) and is still used by Jews to this day. II. The New Testament and Basic Ideas about the Church A. Jesus introduces and concludes the use of the word church : 1. Matthew 16:18 “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” 2. Revelation 22:16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches.

  • 1 the Supremacy of Christ the Gospel Encourages Participation
The Supremacy of Christ The Gospel Encourages Participation Colossians 4:7-18 Introduction Today is our final message on the letter to the Colossians and the Supremacy of Christ. As we learned Colossae was a city in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), situated in the Lycus River valley about 110 miles south-east of Ephesus. It was a prominent city in classical Greek times because of its importance in producing dyed wool and its location on the trade route between Ephesus and the East. It was close to two other cities, Hierapolis and Laodicea, both mentioned in the New Testament. These two cities gradually eclipsed Colossae, and by the time Paul wrote this letter to the Colossians, it was a small and relatively unimportant city. Paul didn’t found the Colossian church, it was one of the churches evangelized by Epaphras, a disciple of Paul's (Col.4.12-13). Epaphras had become alarmed about a cult that was developing in the Colossian church, and since Paul was imprisoned in Rome, he went there to consult with him. Paul agreed the situation was serious and decided to write a letter to the Colossians. Paul begins his letter by thanking God for the Colossians and their decision to become followers of Christ. He commends them for receiving the “gospel” (the good news that Jesus is the Messiah and that through His death, we can be forgiven and reconciled to God. Paul also rejoices that the “gospel” is changing their lives. By accepting Jesus and receiving Eternal Life, the Holy Spirit has given them a sense of inner peace and new hope for their lives.

Who wrote the Gospel according to Matthew’s account? Who wrote the Gospel according to John’s account? Did the Holy Spirit inspire the four Gospels? Confessions of the Gospel of Luke The Church admits that there are forged additions in the New Testament The Gospel of Jesus Christ Who wrote the Old Testament? Loss of the Torah (Old Testament) Loss of a large number of the Bible's Books 3 In my early twenties, I have started my journey of exploring the world. I have visited many countries around the world and learnt about many different cultures and customs. I was shocked by the extent difference between the religions. I saw the Buddhist monks distancing themselves from the worldly life and devoting themselves to worshipping their god, Buddha. I saw the Christian monks isolating themselves in the monasteries and devoting themselves to worshipping their god, Jesus Christ. I saw those who worship trees, stones, cows, mice, fire, money and other inanimate objects, and I saw those who do not believe in the existence of God or they do believe in the existence of God, but they say, “We do not know anything about him.” I liked to hear from each one his point of view about what he worships.

  • Unit 23, Session 2 Jesus Teaches About the Cost of Discipleship
Unit 23, Session 2 Jesus Teaches About the Cost of Discipleship Summary and Goal In this session, we will learn about how our commitment to discipleship needs to start on the inside: with a heart and a mind that clearly understand that Jesus requires total submission from us and that submission is costly. It is no light thing to commit our lives to Christ; it isn’t something we can do halfway. But if we understand the immeasurable worth of Jesus’ commitment toward His disciples, we will be motivated to submit ourselves fully to Him. Session Outline 1. Being Jesus’ disciple requires a clear commitment (Luke 9:57-62). 2. Being Jesus’ disciple requires a total commitment (Luke 14:25-27). 3. Being Jesus’ disciple requires a costly commitment (Luke 14:28-35). Background Passages: Luke 9:57-62; 14:25-35 Session in a Sentence 2 Jesus shared that discipleship involves a clear, total, and costly commitment to following Him. Christ Connection Jesus taught that being His disciple comes at a cost. To be His disciple requires a clear and total commitment and will involve sacrifice. When we commit our entire lives to Jesus as His disciples, we emulate the One who laid down His life on our behalf for our salvation. Missional Application Because Jesus sacrificed His life on our behalf to provide our salvation, we seek to commit our time, resources, and energy for the work of sharing Christ with others so they too might be saved. 66 Date of My Bible Study: ______________________ © 2020 LifeWay Christian Resources Group Time GROUP MEMBER CONTENT Introduction EXPLAIN: Use the paragraphs in the DDG (p.

  • (Douay-Rheims Bible, Challoner Revision, Ca. 1750) the Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians Chapter 1
The New Testament (Douay-Rheims Bible, Challoner revision, ca. 1750) The Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians Chapter 1 [1] Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, and Timothy, a brother, [2] To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ Jesus, who are at Colossa. [3] Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. We give thanks to God, and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you. [4] Hearing your faith in Christ Jesus, and the love which you have towards all the saints. [5] For the hope that is laid up for you in heaven, which you have heard in the word of the truth of the gospel, [6] Which is come unto you, as also it is in the whole world, and bringeth forth fruit and groweth, even as it doth in you, since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth. [7] As you learned of Epaphras, our most beloved fellow servant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ Jesus; [8] Who also hath manifested to us your love in the spirit. [9] Therefore we also, from the day that we heard it, cease not to pray for you, and to beg that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will, in all wisdom, and spiritual understanding: [10] That you may walk worthy of God, in all things pleasing; being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God: [11] Strengthened with all might, according to the power of his glory, in all patience and longsuffering with joy, [12] Giving thanks to God the Father, who hath made us worthy to be partakers of the lot of the saints in light: [13] Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of the Son of his love, [14] In whom we have redemption through his blood, the remission of sins; [15] Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: [16] For in him were all things created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominations, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him and in him.

  • In Christ, We Live for Eternity! It’S So True
THROUGH THE BIBLE COLOSSIANS 3-4 After you commit your all to Jesus - and get really excited about living for Him - don’t be surprised if someone approaches you with some errant advice... A jaded friend - or a lukewarm family member - will say, “Now be careful, don’t become too spiritual. You can be so heavenly mind that you’re no earthly good.” The second half of Colossians refutes this notion once and for all. Paul assures us this is no real danger! He encourages you and I in the opposite direction. He instructs us in verse 2, “set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Our true north should be God’s truth - our bearings fixed on Him - our focus heavenward - our ambitions spiritual and godly. I like what CS Lewis once wrote on this subject... “If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were precisely those who thought most of the next. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this one.” It’s true, the more heavenly-minded and spiritually-minded you really are the more earthly good you’ll do. This is what tonight’s chapters teach us... 1 Paul writes in Colossians 3:1, “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” The old comedian, Jack Benny, was known as a penny-pincher.

  • The Book of Colossians the Christian’S Experience – Putting On: Sanctified Fellowship (4:718) Sanctified Fellowship (4:1418) – Demas, Nympha, Archippus and Paul
Coming in First Place – the preeminence of Jesus Christ “… so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything”(Colossians 1:18). Coming in First Place – The Book of Colossians The Christian’s Experience – Putting On: Sanctified Fellowship (4:718) Sanctified Fellowship (4:1418) – Demas, Nympha, Archippus and Paul 14 Luke, the beloved physician, sends you his greetings, and also Demas. 15 Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea and also Nympha and the church that is in her house. 16 When this letter is read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and you, for your part read my letter that is coming from Laodicea. 17 Say to Archippus, "Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it." 18 I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my imprisonment. Grace be with you. If you could read my notes, you would see that the persons I intend to speak to you about this morning include everyone found in verses 1418 with the exception of the very first person named, which is Luke. There is a reasonable explanation for this. Most of you know that beginning in February we are starting a new series on Sunday mornings from the book of Acts. Most of you are also aware that Luke, the very Luke mentioned in Colossians 4:14, is the author of that book. Therefore, on the advice and insight of one of the men in the church, we will look at what the lives of the remaining people of our text teach us of church life, sanctification and Christlikeness and leave Luke for next week to serve as our transition from Colossians to the book of Acts.
