ECSC 2018 Program The 72nd Annual Eastern Colleges Science Conference Ithaca College 21 April 2018 Program Book MEETING WELCOME Welcome to ECSC 2018 and Ithaca College! It’s my great pleasure to welcome you all to Ithaca College for the 72nd Eastern Colleges Science Conference. We are excited to be welcoming students and faculty from nearly 20 colleges and universities, representing dozens of fields in the social and natural sciences. I have been attending ECSC with my own research students since 1989, and I have always found it be an incredibly rewarding experience for both me and for my undergraduate students in psychology. Students are delighted to have the opportunity to share their research with faculty and other students, explaining their findings and answering questions about their methods and the implications of their research for the field. My students have come back from ECSC weekend really jazzed about doing research, and proud of representing their work and Ithaca College. I hope that all of you have the same experience this weekend. I encourage you to attend as many platform presentations and view as many posters as you can – including ones from areas outside your own field. Ask questions, engage in discussions about the implications of the findings, and make connections with students from other colleges and universities. In this era of “fake news” and distrust of facts and news media, scientific thinking is more important than ever before. It is such a privilege and a pleasure to gather together with a large group of scientists (of many ages) to celebrate the work that we do. The U.S. experienced only one landfalling hurricane in 2014, Hurricane Arthur. Arthur made landfall over the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a Category 2 hurricane on July 4, causing minor damage. While Mexico and Central America were impacted by two landfalling storms and the Caribbean by three, Bermuda suffered the most substantial damage due to landfalling storms in 2014.Hurricane Fay and Major Hurricane Gonzalo made landfall on the island within a week of each other, on October 12 and October 18, respectively.

Done ([email protected]) Abstract. A novel approach to modelling the surface wind field of landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) is presented. The modelling system simulates the evolution of the low-level wind fields of landfalling TCs, accounting for terrain effects. A two- step process models the gradient-level wind field using a parametric wind field model fitted to TC track data, then brings the winds down to the surface using a full numerical boundary layer model. The physical wind response to variable surface drag 15 and terrain height produces substantial local modifications to the smooth wind field provided by the parametric wind profile model. For a set of U.S. historical landfalling TCs the simulated footprints compare favourably with surface station observations. The model is applicable from single event simulation to the generation of global catalogues. One application demonstrated here is the creation of a dataset of 714 global historical TC overland wind footprints.

The season was very active, with 16 tropical storms, 7 of which became hurricanes. There were 49 deaths directly attributed to this year’s tropical cyclones. 1. Pasch 1 May 2015 NASA MODIS VISIBLE IMAGE OF HURRICANE GONZALO AT 1745 UTC 16 OCTOBER 2014 ABSTRACT The 2014 Atlantic hurricane season was below average in several respects. Although the number of hurricanes, six, equaled the long-term average, there were two major hurricanes (category 3 or higher intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale) and eight named storms, compared to the long- term averages of three and 12, respectively. The NOAA Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index, which is a measure of the strength and duration of (sub)tropical storms and hurricanes, was about 72% of the long-term median. Although most of the tropical cyclone activity occurred well east of the east coast of the United States, Hurricane Arthur made landfall on the North Carolina coast in July. Bermuda was hit by two hurricanes, Fay and Gonzalo, in less than a week’s time in October. 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season 2 OVERVIEW Tropical cyclone activity was somewhat below average in the Atlantic basin during 2014. Eight tropical storms formed, of which six became hurricanes, and two intensified into major hurricanes. In comparison the long-term (1981-2010) averages are 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. The NOAA Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index for 2014 was 72% of the long-term median. While most land areas were spared from tropical cyclones in 2014, Hurricane Arthur made landfall on the North Carolina coast, and Bermuda was struck by Hurricanes Fay and Gonzalo within a six-day period.

The findings of this research highlight how climate change requires the US Virgin Islands to forge new practices for efficient resilient planning and development. Without effective rebuilding practices, every future hurricane season will pose as a threat on the US Virgin Island’s economy and residents’ welfare. This paper argues that resilient planning initiatives can reduce the disruption of tourism revenue due to loss of infrastructure, telecommunications, and electricity.
