Meyers, FL The critics are loving Susanna Hoffs’ Someday album today “The lead Bangle revives the warm glow and ornate arrangements of classic ’60s baroque-folk on her first solo album in far too long” --Jim Farber, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS (placement on Top Ten for July list), July 22, 2012 “The horns and string arrangements recall heroes like Burt Bacharach and Dusty Springfield without repeating them. Hoffs indulges her love for pure pop…” --David Bauder, ASSOCIATED PRESS, July 16, 2012 “Sounding as if ‘Manic Monday’ was just yesterday, the Bangle picks the perfect season to return with an album that has ‘summer’ all over it. These sun-kissed, retro-‘60s songs show that she’s lost none of her girlish charm.” --Chuck Arnold, PEOPLE, August 6, 2012 “Susanna Hoffs opens this album by channeling her inner George Harrison on the charming ‘November Sun,’ a catchy tune that’s as bright as it title implies, with a nursery-rhyme simplicity that instantly embeds it in your mind. The Beatles influence is also evident on ‘Picture Me,” a country/pop confection with ‘Strawberry Fields’-inspired horn fills, and ‘True,’ a ballad as sweet as a McCartney love song, with swooning strings set of by a clanging electric guitar.” --J. Poet, MAGNET, Issue #89 Summer 2012 “It’s certainly a left-field surprise. Someday, the jangly, Mitchell-Froome-produced solo set from Bangles bandleader Susanna Hoffs, sparkles with the classy ‘60s sound and delivery of Petula Clark or Dusty Springfeild.” --Tom Lanham, MAGNET, Issue #90 Summer 2012 “…Hoffs sounds as girlish and vulnerable as ever. Small wonder you could imagine songs like ‘Always Enough’ or ‘Holding My Breath’ being covered by Lulu or Cilla Black back in the day. As studiously retro as such references may be, the album never feels like an intel- lectual exercise or an act of regression. The melodies have a faithful ache, and the arrangements a meticulous charm, that fully earns their sources’ beloved company.” --Jim Farber, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, July 17, 2012 Coming Up... 9/24: Ben Sollee “Unfinished,” California Wives “Blood Red Youth”... 10/1: Good Old War “Better Weather”... 10/8: Mike Doughty “Country Roads” (with Rosanne Cash) RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 9/5/12.

So with that introduction, we are pleased to announce that as of this issue, the gazette formerly known as AllAboutJazz-New York will now be called The New York City Jazz Record. It is a change that comes on the heels of our separation New York@Night last summer from the AllAboutJazz.com website. To emphasize that split, we felt 4 it was time to come out, as it were, with our own unique identity. So in that sense, a name is very important. But, echoing Shakespeare’s idea, the change in name Interview: Johnny Mandel will have no impact whatsoever on our continuing mission to explore new worlds 6 by Marcia Hillman and new civilizations...oh wait, wrong mission...to support the New York City and international jazz communities. If anything, the new name will afford us new Artist Feature: Elliott Sharp opportunities to accomplish that goal, whether it be in print or in a soon-to-be- 7 by Martin Longley expanded online presence. LUL LABY ALL MUSIC COMPOSED, ARRANGED AND CONDUCTED BY VINCE MENDOZA WWW.VINCEMENDOZA.NET WWW.HORIZONTALJAZZ.COM WWW.ARTOFGROOVE.DE PRODUCED BY VINCE MENDOZA Vince Mendoza - Nights on Earth Acclaimed composer-arranger-conductor to release his most personal and compelling project to date. After a remarkably productive decade which saw him writing stellar orchestral arrangements for recordings by such popular singers as Bjork, Melody Gardot, Sting and Joni Mitchell (he won Grammy Awards for his contributions to her Both Sides Now in 2000 and Travelogue in 2003), Vince Mendoza has shifted focus back to his own compositions for the first time in 13 years. His most personal and compelling project to date, Nights on Earth is yet another crowning achievement in the career of the acclaimed composer-arranger-conductor. On this eagerly-awaited follow up to Epiphany (which he recorded in 1997 with the London Symphony Orchestra), Mendoza recruited an all-star cast of long time collaborators like guitarists John Abercrombie, John Scofield and Nguyen Le, drummer Peter Erskine, percussionist Luis Conte, organist Larry Goldings, steel drummer Andy Narell, pianists Kenny Werner and Alan Pasqua, saxophonists Bob Mintzer and Joe Lovano. He is also joined by such new friends as Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza, Malian kora player and singer Tom Diakite, Argentinian bandoneon master Hector del Curto, Algerian drummer Karim Ziad, French saxophonist Stéphane Guillaume and young American jazz stars in bassist Christian McBride, drummer Greg Hutchinson and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, a winner of the 2007 The lonious Monk International Jazz Competition.
