  • Sydney Dance Company - a Study of a Connecting Thread with the Ballets Russes’
‘Sydney Dance Company - A study of a connecting thread with the Ballets Russes’ Peter Stell B.A. (Hons). The Australian Centre, School of Historical Studies, The University of Melbourne. A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts by Research May, 2009. i Declaration I declare that the work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, original, except as acknowledged in the text, and that the material has not been submitted, either in whole or in part, for a degree at this or any other university. …………………………………………. Peter Stell ii Abstract This thesis addresses unexplored territory within a relatively new body of scholarship concerning the history of the Ballets Russes in Australia. Specifically, it explores the connection between the original Diaghilev Ballets Russes (1909- 1929) and the trajectories of influence of Russian ballets that visited Australia. The study’s hypothesis is that the Sydney Dance Company, under the artistic direction of Graeme Murphy between 1976 and 2007, and the creation in 1978 of Murphy’s first full-length work Poppy, best exemplifies in contemporary terms the influence in Australia of the Ballets Russes. Murphy was inspired to create Poppy from his reading of the prominent artistic collaborator of the Ballets Russes, Jean Cocteau. This thesis asserts that Poppy, and its demonstrable essential connection with the original Diaghilev epoch, was the principal driver of Murphy’s artistic leadership over fifty dance creations by himself and collaborative artists. This study sketches the origins of the Ballets Russes, the impact its launch made on dance in the West, and how it progressed through three distinguishable phases of influence.

Branding a Cool Celebrity President: Popular Music, Political Advertising, and the 2012 Election JOANNA LOVE During the 2008 American presidential campaign, Senator John McCain attempted to twist the widespread popularity and likability of his opponent, Senator Barack Obama, into a caricature of a frivolous and “intellectually hollow” celebrity.1 In a move later criticized for its overt mudslinging, McCain personally endorsed a commercial titled “Celebrity” that pictured Obama opposite the train- wreck pop princess Britney Spears and party-girl heiress Paris Hilton (Figure 1). Figure 1: Commercial stills: 2008 Obama “Celebrity” Commercial, Endorsed by John McCain. John McCain 2008, “Celebrity,” 2008. Set to the rhythmic chanting of Obama’s name, the spot features images of the Illinois senator at a rally in Berlin, Germany.2 The sights and sounds of the paparazzi’s cameras accompany a montage of Obama’s face spliced between images of Spears and Hilton. A voiceover declares, “He’s the biggest celebrity in the world, but is he ready to lead?” The commercial continues, “With gas prices soaring, Barack Obama says ‘no’ to offshore drilling? And says he’ll raise taxes on electricity?” To punctuate the implied gravity of these questions, the pounding of a bass drum silences the presumably brainwashed and star-struck chanting crowd. Only the punch line is left to round out the spot: “Higher taxes. More foreign oil. That’s the real Obama.” 1 Sam Stein, “McCain Ad Links Paris Hilton, Britney Spears To Obama,” Huffington Post, August 7, 2008, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/30/mccain-ad-links-paris-hil_n_115841.html.

Nouse Web Archives Band of the Week: Yello Page 1 of 3 News Comment MUSE. Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Music › Band of the Week › News Features Reviews Playlists Band of the Week: Yello Resident sound-nerd Tom Killingbeck thumbs through reams of musty vinyl so you don’t have to. Here are his weekly recommendations… Monday 17 January 2011 #11: Yello Who: Dieter Meier, Boris Blank, Carlos Perón. When: 1980’s. Where: Switzerland. Why: Swiss electro-pop pioneers Yello’s back-story reads like a Wes Anderson film that never got past pre-production. In the late 70’s, tech-nerds Boris Blank and Carlos Perón began an electronic music project with their knowledge of sampling and tape loops, inspired by the continental programming experiments of replicants like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. They soon realised they need a singer, so hired Dieter Meier, a millionaire industrialist as well as a conceptual artist, filmmaker, professional poker player, wine-maker and sometime golfer for the Swiss national team. Really. Together, the three set about putting together perhaps the most astonishingly brilliant synth-pop debut of all time, Solid Pleasure. The album stood head and shoulders above the crowds of synthesizer wielding thralls to Kraftwerk, and confidently advertised the group’s idiosyncrasy and versatility. Along with electronic interpretations of various exotic styles – ‘Downtown Samba’ and ‘Coast to Polka’ for example, there were bona fide pop hits in the form of the tongue twisting, driving ‘Bostich’. They even found time to include a three-piece electronic suite of ambient industrial music.
