A WORLD IN WHICH I FEEL CONSTANT MANIFESTATIONS OF WOMAN HATE. TO EXPRESS THIS VIEW IS TO COME UNDER ATTACK FROM ALMOST EVERYONE. THE HOSTILE REACTIONS I RECEIVE CONVINCE ME THAT WHAT I SEE IS TRUE - TO BE A WOIV1AN ISN'T JUST AN INCONVENIENCE, AS I THOUGHT WHEN I WAS YOUNGER... TO BE BORN WITH A CUNT IS TO BE REVILED, RAPED, DISBELIEVED, TRIVIALISED, IGNORED, ABUSED, HOW CAN I BELIEVE THIS AND STILL BE HAPPY? HOW CAN 1 EMERGE FROM MY BED EVERY DAY TO NEGOTIATE MY WAY THROUGH THE WORLD? SOMETIMES I CRY, SOMETIMES I WANT TO RUN AWAY, SOMETIMES I WANT TO MAKE IT ALL DISAPPEAR... BUT LIKE MY MOTHERS AND MY SISTERS THROUGH TIME, I AM SURVIVING IN A BRUTAL WORLD. PEOPLE WHO SAY THAT WOMEN ARE WEAK ARE WRONG. WOMEN ARE TORTURED, SCORNED AND SILENCED, YET WE LEARN WAYS TO SURVIVE. SOMETIMES SURVIVAL IS ALL THAT WE CAN DO, WITH OUR HISTORIES OF INCEST, RAPE AND VIOLENCE. SOMETIMES SURVIVING INVOLVES AN ACCEPTANCE OF THE LIE THAT WE ARE SOMEHOW LACKING ... IN BEAUTY, IN INTELLIGENCE, IN PERSONALITY, IN WORTH, WE GO ON DIETS, STAY SILENT IN CONVERSATIONS AND WISH THAT WE COULD BE THE WOMEN WE HATE, SO MUCH OF OUf? ENERGY (S SPENT IN SELF-HATE AND FEAR.

I BEGIN TO MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN MY HATRED OF MY SELF, MY SISTERS AND MY MOTHERS AND MY FEAR OF MEN. I READ TALES OF FEMINIST REVOLT, I BEGIN TO MEET WOMEN WHO GLOW LIKE GODDESSES AND ARE RADIANT WITH THE ENERGY OF LIFE. WE TALK ABOUT BEING WOMEN AND WE KNOW THAT WE ARE NOT EVIL OR STUPID, EXCEPT SOMETIMES I STILL THINK SO. I BEGIN TO WORK OUT HOW I HAVE BEEN BRAINWASHED. EVERYDAY I AM LEARNING SOMETHING NEW ABOUT MYSELF. A LOT OF THE TIME I AM STILL UNHAPPY, BUT I AM BEGINNING TO LEARN HOW TO SURVIVE REALLY WELL. I FIND THAT IF I TELL MYSELF SOMETHING OFTEN ENOUGH, AND HAVE THE COURAGE TO BELIEVE MYSELF, THEN 1 CAN CHANGE, I CAN WORK OUT HOW TO BE HAPPY. WITH ENORMOUS RELIEF, I BEGIN TO BELIEVE THAT I AM AMAZING FOR SURVIVING THROUGH MY FEAR. I REALISE THAT i AM NOW FREE TO CREATE MYSELF IN POSITIVE, HEALTHY WAYS, BECAUSE I NO LONGER BELIEVE THE LIES THAT I AM TOLD. I CAN TAKE CHARGE OF MY HAPPINESS, I CAN DO MORE THAN JUST SURVIVE. BUT I HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO BE HAPPY, AND THIS IS WHERE I LOOK TO MY SHINING GODDESS SISTERS. THEY ASTOUND ME BY HOW STRONG AND POWERFUL THEY ARE. THEY CREATE THEMSELVES WITH FEATHERS AND ROCKS AND GLITTER, NO LONGER DO I HATE THE WOMEN I WANT TO BE LIKE, I FIND MYSELF FILLED WITH LOVE AND SOMETIMES DESIRE.

I FEEL LIKE A GIRL NEXT TO THEIR GLOWING WOMANHOOD. I FEAR THAT I COULD NEVER BE SO STRONG, I COULD NEVER CREATE MY LIFE WITH MAGIC. I STOP MYSELF AND SMILE. I'VE HAD ENOUGH OF BEING TOLD WHAT I CAN'T DO, OF BELIEVING THAT I AM INCAPABLE. I ...... / "'•••.,. ''••... DON'T BELIEVE THE LIES ANYMORE, AND THAT IS A POWERFUL POSITION. IF ••' '••... •'••. Protesting for black rights by Lucrelia Mott (1793-1850) led to the first women's righls convention where on the 19th July 1848, FJizabeth Cady Stanton (1815 - 1902) proposed a woinen's campaign for the vote. Shouts from females in the crowd included "Tiial's going too far!" and "it's not a women's place!" Sound familiar'.' In the fight for women's suffrage some individuals stand out such as Christable and Sylvia Pankhurst (Brilian) but it was only by the support of thousands of women across each country and the si.slerhood around the world that gathered the momenlum needed to open the door to the parliament. With the vote came the need for political parties to consider women as individuals wilh the power to put them out of power. Australian women won the vole in 1909 bul aboriginal women had to wait unlil 1967. Throughout the first and second world wars women had the opportunity to fill many jobs in the male dominated arenas. No country In the world treats its women as well as men. Often discrimination against women is reflected in national law. In some countries the law goes further; it does not only discriminate, it provides for particularly cruel, inhuman and degrading punishments for offences committed by women. Hundreds of women have been flogged lor breaching the dress laws introduced in Sudan in March 1991. In Bangla desh, a village council declared a young woman's second marriage to be illegal under Islamic law and, therefore, ac cused her of adultery. She was buried in the ground up to her chest and publicly stoned to death by local villagers. On February 28,1994 Katia Bengana was shot dead on her way home from school for not wearing a "hidjab" • the Is lamic veil. It seems very "unreal" to us but, sadly enough, it

Dear Sisters, I wisii to bring to your attention wliat the current political stalemate in our couniry has brought to us and to ask for your assistance. It would be recalled that in 1990 you helped us financially lo cater for the influx of Llberian refugees who fled the civil war in their country to seek refuge in our house. Since our country's independence 34 years ago the army has ruled for 24 years conceding only 10 years lo civilians; so the army could be blamed (or our socio-political and economic problems because they have been ruling for most of the time. Besides, most people are tired of continued military dictatorship especially now that the world is embracing democracy. That was why v/hen a presidential election was held on June 12,1993 to usher in a democratically elected government, everybody thoughi that the dawn of a new era had come; and when the result of that election, which was adjudged as the freest and fairest in the political history of this country, whose clear winner. Chief Moshood Abida, was annulled by the army, this provoked a widespread reaction amongst the people and since then this country has never been the same again. Early last year pro-democracy activists, labour leaders and a section of the press started to pressurize Chief Abida to reclaim his mandate. Therefore, on June 11,1994, during the first anniversary of the annulment. Chief Abida declared himself president of Nigeria. He was promptly arrested and detained wilhout trial by the security forces, and since then a nev/ wave of our crisis began. Oil workers throughout lhe country went on an indefinite strike calling on the military to release and restore him lo power. They were supported by pro-democracy groups, labour leaders, some politicians, students and market women. For weeks and weeks between June and September everything was at a standstill and the couniry was al the verge of disintegration. Banks, business centres and schools closed; cars and pedestrians were off the roads and all public utilities paralysed. Public demonstartions by interest groups ended in violence and bloodshed. There were food shortages and outbreaks of diseases in different areas. Here in this town an outbreak of typhoid during the period claimed several lives of women and childen during the period because of poor water and sanitation. The army then began a clampdown on all its' perceived enemies throwing them in jail without trial. Labour unions were disolved and some popular newspapers banned. Some draconian decrees were hurriedly promulgated abolishing civil liberties. It was after these repressive measures that things started moving again. On the 2nd October the army further compounded our tensed political situation by increasing the prices of all petroleum prices by 400%. Consequently, the prices of foodstuff and essential goods went beyond the reach of the ordinary citizen. Inflation rate also increased by 500%. Today it is a common sight seeing poor women and children scavaging for food from the garbage heaps of the rich and the privileged. Because the economy has run aground many Nigerians have taken to pushing drugs and committing other crimes abroad. This has not only eroded the coyntry's image abroad, but further led to more humiliating treatment of Nigerians in various international airports, Here at home, crime wave is very high. On the 4lh September our Centre was invaded by armed robbers at about 1:45 am. My daughter was the first to be woken from sleep from gun-shots, and she defied the robber's command to remain indoors and swiftly escaped into the bush behind the Centre while the robbers fired several gun-shots towards her direction but she finally emerged unharmed. I, and the rest of the women were subjected to thorough beating, assault and search and at the end all our donated clothings, shoes, books, lantern, stove, radio set, sewing machine, wall clock and all our money for food were stolen. As if that was not enough, three of our women were raped at gun-point at our full glare. 1 was stripped naked and could have been raped but for my menses and I believe my daughter could have been raped if she had not escaped. We mel a doctor early in the morning who treated us of pains, bruises, bodily and genital wounds and prevented the raped women against unwanted pregnancy Up till now we are yet to recover fully from the trauma of that terrible experience. Since this is our polilicai problem, I am earnestly appealing to you that if it Is your wish you should help, send us either financial or material assistance to help alleviate our present suffering. If you have at your disposal used women and children's clothings and shoes please do not hesitate to send lo us and inscribe on the package: "Charity Donation/Not For Sale". I am sorry asking you to read this lengthy letter but I want you to know the background of our situation. I look fonward to your help. In sisterhood, Hannah Edemlkpong. If you want to make a donation or leave clothes the Women's Area is co-ordinating an appeal and will accept all contributions. We borrowed Khamalinpindula from the villages. We played her every night by the ancient lake that separates Mozambique from Malawi. Often we imagined that the distant silent mountains of Mozambique cold hear us, as we sang and beat our palms against her obliging skin. One day a young man invited us to the village for an afternoon of Malawi-style performance and jam. He eyed Khamalinpindula and invited her along too. That afternoon was hot and bright. As we squatted in the back of a truck great grey boababs flashed past waving us onwards and jumping for joy with each bump of the road. Re-defining masculmlti/: a job for the boys. Feminism has gone a long way in exploring and naming the systematic oppression of women within our culture. The same system that traps women into gender specific modes of behaviour also dictates' appropriate and acceptable male roles which are restrictive and oppressive to men. If we can see this system for what it is we are allowed to explore other aspects of ourselves - whether maie or female. Some men today have been able to see through their themselves and still be accepted. Women have begun to carve conditioning and the sexist roles assigned to them and have begun new ways of being for themselves - now it's the boys turn. to address their sexism and to challenge the system and the ideas As feminists what is the position we should take on the Issue which maintain the oppression oi women. This article is addressed of male oppression, should we give it any space, should we include to these men - those who have had the courage to stand together articles about it in Women's Semper etc. A response I often hear with women, those who have the courage to learn from women, those to the issue of women addressing the question of male oppression who have a vision of a world where all people are treated with equality or the men's movement is that this is part of the male backlash and respect, against women and as soon as we've gained a bit of ground men "What's in it for me" is a question I once heard that a male start wlngelng and saying "what about us" and stealing back the friend had sincerely asked about why he should support the end of attention. This is true for sections of the "men's movement" - women's oppression. My initial response was a gag but when I had definitely those who want to maintain the status quo and keep cleared my throat and my mind a little realised that this Is a little male dominance or those who feel threatened by the concept of articulated point - possibly because most of us expect the answer is loosing their advantaged position. However, either we accept that obvious. Only someone who has been al top end of the power all men are Intrinsically bad and that we want a different system of hierarchy could wonder this • for the rest ofthe world having a goal dominance in the form of a matriarchy or we acknowledge and of living peacefully and without oppression seems to need no support legitimate attempts by men to redefine what it is explanation. The fact is that sexism is the liberation from a prescribed way of being, to experience is still rife in this culture and women have the right to reclaim knowing other people in real ways ralher than from the position of whatever space we want to and to empower ourselves in whatever oppressor and at last to have the opportunily of exploring other way we see fit. Further, if some boys feel a bit nervous about this aspects of masculinity than those defined by our dominant culture. - we don't care. For instance, men have feelings too but alot of them don't know it Men will do well to look to the women's movement for because since they were children boys were lold that only girls cry. guidance as they reclaim masculinity back from the hands of the If our culture allowed some form of emotional expression for boys patriarchal power mongers. To see the example of their mothers perhaps we wouldn't have the highest youth suicide rate in young and sisters who sought collective structures to work through males in the worid! There is a whole world of experience denied to where power is decentralised and each is encouraged lo offer males by the dominant modes of thoughi in our culture - experiences what they can. To reclaim characteristics that they have been that are not added extras to the human experience but vital to being denied and to re-evaluate those that have been left open to a healthy person. Once we realise that the roles that our culture has them. To meet together and talk about their feelings and their allowed for us do noi satisfy these basic human needs we experience fears. To find space where they can celebrate being male at no an alienation that can be explained as a feeling of disconnectedness one else's expense and struggle against tyrannies of all kind - with the dominant value system. Many people find it impossible to especially those within themselves. find a place within mainstream culture where they can express Sandy WOMEN'S COALITION FIGHTS QUEENSLAND CRIMINAL CODE On 17 January 1995, Children by Choice initialed a meeting with feminist and legal organisations from across the State to develop a direct political action strategy In response to the proposed new Criminal Code, The Government's intention of review of the Criminal Code was to take Queensland from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, yet the new Code retains outdated, anti-women legislation, including 1899 codes ••••••••••••••••••• •••••• on abortion. The Coalition of Women for a Realistic Criminal Code was formed at this meeting to organise a public campaign to allow women's voices ABORTION to be heard. Our strength is in our numbers. To date about 30 feminist and legal organisations have become involved, The Coalition believes that the new Code perpetuates HAS disadvantages and injustices which have been an intrinsic part of the State's legal system to date. CREATED The Coalition of Women for a Realistic Criminal Code has campaigned for the following changes to the Criminal Code: MORE • the need to repeal all abortion laws so that quality abortion services are appropriately provided on the same basis as other health services; DISCUSSION • the need to broaden the offence of rape so that oral rape and rape with an object are recognised as forms of rape and labelled as such; ON CAMPUS • the abolition of the corroboration rule which requires the victim's evidence to be confirmed by some independent evidence in a rape trial, This rule is based on the mylh that women iie about rape and IN THE PAST is a particularly traumatic part of the court process for rape victims; • the need lo ensure that the defences of self-defence and provocation YEAR THAN can be used by women who kill or attack violent partners. There are women who have killed in these circumstances who are currentiy PERHAPS serving mandatory life sentences in Queensland; • that mandatory life for murder be abolished and that an urgent review be undertaken of the sentences of all women who have been ANY OTHER convicted of murdering their violent male partners; • the need to decriminalise prostitution, as recommended by the ISSUE. ITIS Criminal Justice Commission, because criminalisation jeopardises the safety of women who work in the sex industry; and • the facl that the draft Bill abolishes the rights to criminal A ISSUE compensation which are contained in the Criminal Code. Of these seven concerns the Queensland Government has acted THAT MANY on only one. The Government's only concession has been to agree to remove the outrageous "corroboration" requirement in rape cases, after PEOPLE considerable agitation by women's groups. (Queensland will be the last Australian State to do away wilh this requirement.) The Coalition began with a successful rally and march on 17 FEEL VERY February 1995 which attracted significant media attention before and after the event, tn particular, the Queensland edition of the ABC 7.30 INTENSELY Report interviewed the Premier, Mr Goss, for the first ten minutes ofthe program on 20 February on the subject of the Criminal Code, including abortion. The interview also critically examined the Premier's track record ABOUT on women's issues generally, including affirmative action in the public service. HERE WE Senator Margaret Reynolds approached the Premier on behalf of the Coalition to arrange a meeting to discuss the inequities facing women HAVE throughout Queensland in relation to the Criminal Code Bill 1994. The Premier advised that he was too busy to meet with representatives from the Coalition of Women for a Realistic Criminal Code. PRESENTED The Coalition held a Press Conference on 28 February 1995 at which the Premier was challenged to a debate. This challenge was not FOUR met. In fact, every request of the Coalition to meet with the Premier was denied and referred to the Attorney-General, Mr Wells. The Coalition OPINIONS met with the Attorney-General on two occasions. The Premier's refusal lo meet with the Coalition came despite his Government's stated commitment to women and the consultation process. Since its inception in January, the Coalition has conducted a number of political action strategies, including a picket outside Pariiament House on 28 March 1995 and numerous media releases, all of which have gained significant media attention. The campaign of the Coalition of Women for a Realistic Criminal Code continues despite the Premier's refusal to consult and meet with this key stakeholder group in such a major exercise as the creation of a new Criminal Code, This criminal legislation has now been passed and Is expected to become law in 1996 upon proclamation. Due to the almost total failure to comprehend women's issues during the writing of the new Criminal Code, the Coalition of Women for a Realistic Criminal Code is calling for a Women's Law Reform Commission to examine Queensland laws in relation to women. We would welcome any support you can give to the campaign in whatever way you are able. And, increasingly popular Is the discussion on women artists.

Women artists In Chinese history have mainly v/orked under the constraints of men, with the exception of embroidery. This meant that it was difficult to gain further Insight Into the creative processes of Chinese women.

At the beginning of the 20th century, urban youth and intellec tuals were inspired by western concepts such as "women's liberation" and "equality of the sexes." A result of this was a surgence of women dedicating themselves lo art. By the 1950s there was an unprecedented Increase in working women artists.

Although government art instituiions and other social organisations welcomed women's work in their spaces, the art produced, like that of men, merely reflected the communist government's "models" for art. These models consisted of hvo opposing female stereotypes: the peasant woman who helps the male "worker Peasant Soldier" [Gong nong bing] and the heroic "masculine" woman.

At the same time, a movement towards "art tor art's sake" (not politics) began, allowing the gradual opening of women's minds,

At first much of the artists' work (both male and female) concentrated mainly on developing western styles and techniques. As a result of the rebellious and highly questioning nature of the western influences, women artists eventually began depicting women in their artworks as representative of their own feelings and experiences.

In the early 1980s, artists were finally released from the constraints "At present there are few artworks in China which espouse of the extreme political dogma and allowed to create their own an overt women's consciousness. This Is due to the fact images. As time progressed, so did the experlementation in the that Chinese women have been disadvantaged In daily art world. Psychiatry is used as a tool of social control and oppression. In this society women are subject to the control and oppression of psychiatry much more than men.

In 1987 I was admitted as a patient into the psychiotric ward of a local hospital. My diagnosis was severe depression. I underwent intensive drug therapy and 18 ECT (a modern odapta- tion of shock treatment) during five years of continuous psychiotric hospitalisation.

By the end of those five years the list of my psychiatric diagnoses had grown to Include anxiety disorder, compulsive obsessive disorder, a drug induced epileptic condition and a psychotic condition. Due to the "seriousness" of my condition, I was forced to withdraw from two university degrees ond I was even confined to hospital grounds for my 21 st birthday. For five years I "exisied" os a drug-fucked bastion of indifference, believing my only identity was that of a psychiotric patient.

General Psychiatric theory still fails to recognise that environmental factors (socialisation, discrimination, reduced social status, sexual abuse and violence) may adversely affect the mental health of women, instead it relates most complaints to biology; a biology which defines women in terms of negation, in terms of lack, for example, medical textbooks discuss the mole pelvis as the norm, before digressing into the realms of difference which involve female pelvis's.

It is clear that women are over-represented as patients - a recent study by the Key Centre for Women's Health Melbourne) reveals that the incidence of depression among women is twice that of men. On the other hand, women are under-repre sented as psychiatrists; in Australia, only 23% of Psychiatrists ore women. These imbalonces ore indicative ofthe ways in which psychiatry acts to marginalise women and their complaints, by merely negating and labelling their reaction to their lived experiences as "crazy", "neurotic" or mod.

The most extreme and nightmarish effort to monoge women's minds by regulating their bodies was Dr. Isaac Baker Brown's surgical practice of clitoridectomy as o cure for female insanity in the late 1800s. Brown bscome convinced that modness was caused by on 'unfeminine' expression of sexuality through masturbation by women, and the surgical removal ofthe clitoris, oy helping women to control themselves, could holt a disease that would otherwise load to hysteria and thence to idiocy, mania and death, contrary to popular belief, many of the supposedly out-dated barbaric forms of early psychiatry still exist. 'Shock Treai- menf is still performed, as ECT (Electro Convulsive Therapy) with the administration ofa general anaesthetic; people can still be 'committed', by being "regulated" under the mental Health Act (in Queensland; ond Leucotomies (a modern adaptation ai lobotomies) ore still performed. The performonce of these procedures, under the bonner of modern psychiatry, has frightenin ' repercussions for all women, when one considers the over-representation of femole patients in psychiatric institutions.

Most comploints which offect women ore gen erally viewed as biological in origin - social, racial and economic inequalities are not taken into consideration, and ore poorly managed. It deals with homosexuality in the Catholic priesthood and the lingering social problems faced by the city of Liverpool. The Incisive screenplay and superb performances by a largely unknown cast make ll a thought provoking and passionate film. 1.43 (M) PRIEST **** "SO MANY LAYERS AND SUCH DISTINCTIVE WILD IRISH BEAUTY its the kind of film you could return to for the rest of your life." JUICE JOHN SAYLES (MATEWAN: PASSIONFISH) has based his film on the Secret of Rosalie K. Fry's novel of a fey, fanciful place, enshrined in the myths and legends of Ireland. Told through the eyes of a young girl. Whatever Sayles tackles there is always a great deal of thought and intelligence, and in Roan Inish this film it's the famllys roots In their Island culture, which is riddled with tSiii^tii*-. magic and fantasy. The film comes down strongly on the side of those 4 mm by JOHN SAVES ^'••-. who defy traditional and follow their hearts. 1.42 (G) f THE SCHONELLTHEATRE IS IN THE INTERNET ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB. Western signifying systems conceive of tne universe in terms' of binary oppositions: good/bad, mir^d/body, culture/nature, human/animal, order/chaos, ' ^^^ worl(/leisure, business/pleasuije. Within these couples, one term is supf^or, i defined as that which is not the subordinate'term. Good is that which is%ot bad. The relevance of this to glamour, women, the politics of appearance? Hmmm..^

It is to our advantage to seek to overturn, disturb these categories for much of women's oppression is founded upon them. Seek to unite mind and body, nature and culture, seeic to find means to express the ways in which mind ancf body, nature and culture are connected. Sometimes the.same. Maybe this is why it is appropriate to include a fashion shoot in a feminist publicauon. Bodies have been uncovered by feminist activity as possibly the most important yet forgotten signifying spaces in the history of the word. ^

Experiences such as rape, incest, genital mutilation, eating disorders and illegal abortion tend to alienate women from our bodies, so maybe learning to love and appreciate our flesh is a crucial political action. While it could be argued that photographic images re-inforce conventional patriachal constructions of Woman as Objectified Other, the women on the Inside cover of this edition of Semper have felt the terrors of patriachy and are seeking means of expression, ways to regroup, possibilities of pleasure... ^ ^
