This, combined with Cranfield’s facilities, prepares students for roles within the industry where they can make a real difference from day one. The group design project (GDP) enables students to showcase their skills following the taught modules. The GDP is a substantial piece of work that essentially is a whole vehicle design and this year, it involves groups of typically 12 students who are carefully selected to provide a range of skill sets within each group. Enclosed are the CV’s of the individual group members, please take time to browse them. As I believe they are an exceptional cohort this year. You can find their contact details within their CV. Thank you for your continued support. Dr Glen Sherwood, Course Director MSc in Automotive Engineering T: +44 (0)1234 758056 E: [email protected] 7 Automotive Engineering and Mechatronics Group design project 2020-21 The Cranfield Motor Corporation (CMC) is start up company that has been tasked by investors to design and produce vehicles in the segments (C, J & S), medium-sized family car, SUV and sports car or a “specialist vehicle of your choice”. As a group, students will provide a concept for two of the segments above which will be presented to the CMC board of directors where approval for one of the concepts will be given before proceeding with the final design. Each concept must have a different unique technical aspect which will set it apart from its marketplace competitors. For the design concepts the teams must consider the UK legislation for 2030 as the cut off for the sale of gasoline and diesel fuelled vehicles. Certain hybrid vehicles are allowed. The concept presentations should include: • CMC Corporate Identity (a readily identifiable corporate shape or feature), • Likely powertrain and powertrain architecture layout, • Projection of likely performance (should be in-line with segment), • Innovative/novel concept, • A high proportion of recyclability. (End of life directive), • High-level total vehicle carbon and energy footprint and mitigation. Following a presentation of the two concepts the CMC board decided which concept the groups would take forward to final design. 8 Team one 9 Automotive Engineering Antoine Bordas Mangesh Sudhir Dhuri Marc-Antoine Geffray Automotive Engineering MSc Automotive Engineering MSc Automotive Engineering MSc Ankith Gokul Govind Aravind Madathil Himmat Natkar Automotive Engineering MSc Automotive Engineering MSc Automotive Engineering MSc Alexandre Arthaud Parnaland Virgile Pouillas Jiadong Qu Automotive Engineering MSc Automotive Engineering MSc Automotive Engineering

  • Fuel Consumption from Light Commercial Vehicles in India, Fiscal Year 2018–19
WORKING PAPER 2021-02 © 2021 INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL ON CLEAN TRANSPORTATION JANUARY 2021 Fuel consumption from light commercial vehicles in India, fiscal year 2018–19 Author: Ashok Deo Keywords: CO2 standards, fleet average fuel consumption, mini truck, pickup truck, greenhouse gas emissions Introduction This paper examines the fuel consumption of new light commercial vehicles (LCVs) sold in India in fiscal year (FY) 2018–19. These vehicles are the N1 segment in India, and passenger vehicles are the M1 category.1 LCVs in India are not yet subject to any carbon dioxide (CO2) emission standards, even though such standards apply to passenger cars and have proven effective in driving down test-cycle emission levels of new vehicles. This work establishes a baseline of fuel consumption for the N1 segment in India, to help regulators develop an effective CO2/fuel consumption standard. Additionally, we compare the N1 fleets for FY 2014–15, FY 2017–18, and FY 2018–19, understand the characteristics of the mini truck and pickup segments within the N1 category, and compare the performance of major LCV manufacturers in India in terms of fleet average fuel consumption. Finally, we assess the performance of India’s LCV fleet against the LCV fleet in the European Union, considering the differences in the curb weight and size of the vehicles, and examine the performance of LCV manufacturers if a star labeling standard or passenger car fuel consumption standards were to be applied. Background LCVs are used in India as “last-mile” connectivity to move goods to their final destination. The light-duty vehicle market was approximately 87% passenger cars and 13% LCVs in FY 2018 –19.2 This study focuses on India’s LCVs, which are bifurcated into two segments by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), as shown in www.theicct.org Table 1.

Newsletter Volume 4, Issue 8, August 2014 Mechanical Aspire Achievements in Sports, Projects, Industry, Research and Education All About Nobel Prize- Part 8 - Can Nobel Prize be sold? The 1935 Nobel Prize in physics that was awarded to English scientist James Chadwick for his discovery of the neutron was sold at auction for $329,000. Sotheby's auction house, which handled the sale on June 3, 2014, in New York, estimated that the Nobel gold medal and its accompanying diploma would sell for between $200,000 and $400,000. Sotheby's did not release any information about the James Chadwik buyer. The seller was a collector of medals and coins, who bought Chadwick's Nobel (1891-1974) gold medal and diploma from the famed physicist about 20 years ago. Chadwick studied under British scientist Ernest Rutherford, who is considered the father of nuclear physics, and whose model of the atom (which was the first to show that much of its charge was concentrated in a nucleus) earned him a Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1908. Decades later, Chadwick proved the theoretically predicted existence of neutrons — electrically neutral particles in the nucleus of an atom that have slightly more mass than protons. Scientists soon understood that neutrons could be used in nuclear chain reactions to release massive amounts of energy. Chadwick, who was knighted in 1945, was involved in developing the first atomic bombs during World War II, as head of the British contingent of the Manhattan Project. He even witnessed the Trinity bomb test — the world's first nuclear explosion — on July 16, 1945, at the Alamogordo Air Base in New Mexico.
