Lung, surgeon in the United States Navy. This collection is the property of Stanford University, but a series of specimens has been presented to the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries and to the U. S. National Museum. The specimens in question are in excellent condition, and the large number of species obtained shows the faithful work of Dr. Lung as collector. I . The following are the new species in the collection, with the numbers borne by the types and cotypes in the Stanford University and U. S. National museums. In cases where specimens are registered in both institutions the first number given is that of Stanford University, the second that of the National Museum.     Ecology, abundance and distribution assessment of the endemic Rarotonga Starling (Aplonis cinerascens) Ana Tiraa st109560 School of Environment, Resources and Development Natural Resources Management August 2010 Abstract Aplonis cinerascens, or I’oi, an endemic Starling found on the island of Rarotonga, Cook Islands, was studied through field observations, literature review, questionnaire surveys and communication with knowledgeable individuals and research institutions. The Rarotongan species represents the most southerly and easterly extent in the range of the extant Aplonis genus. Previous research on the species has been ad hoc in manner. This study is the first attempt in dedicating research on I’oi, and aims to consolidate all currently available information in to one report, together with results of an investigation of the distribution, abundance, and ecology of the bird. Key words: I’oi, Starling, Distribution, Abundance, Aplonis cinerascens, Rarotonga, Cook Islands, Ecology 1 Introduction The Cook Islands comprises 15 small islands scattered over 1.8 million square kilometres of the South Pacific Ocean. Located between latitudes 9 degrees and 22 degrees south and longitudes 157 degrees and 166 degrees West, the islands are flanked by Samoa and Tonga on the west, French Polynesia on the east, and Kiribati to the North. With a total land area of only 240 sq. km, the islands are divided geographically, into the Northern and Southern groups. Six islands make up the Northern group - Suwarrow, Nassau, Pukapuka, Rakahanga, Manihiki and Penryhn while the Southern group comprises nine islands - Palmerston, Aitutaki, Manuae, Takutea, Atiu, Mitiaro, Mauke, Mangaia and Rarotonga. Rarotonga is of volcanic origin, and is the commercial center of the Cook Islands.

Bureau of Insular Affairs at the Lou­ isiana Purchase Exposition, held at St. Louis, Missouri, during the summer and fall of 1904, was a considerable collection of fishes from the Philippine Islands. This collection had been made under the direction of the Philippine government for the specific purpose mentioned. At the close of the exposition the authorities turned the entire collection over.to the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries for study and report. The localities represented in the collection are as follows: San Fabian, Pangasinan, Luzon.~San Fabian is situated on the Gulf of Lin­ gayen, about 100 miles north of Manila. The collection from this place was made by Mr. C. L. Hall and is a-large and important one. Bacon, Sorsoqon, Luzon.-Sorsogon is the most southern province of Luzon. Bacon is situated in the northern part of the province, on Albay Inlet, in approxi- mately latitude 130 3' north and longitude 1240 east. Bulan, Sorsogon, Luzon.-Bulan is on the west coast of Sorsogon, near the southern end of the province, approximately in latitude 120 38' north, longitude 1230 22' east. The collections from Bacon and Bulan are more extensive than any of the others.

OLSON ABSTRACT Overlooked manuscript notes made by Andrew Bloxam during the voyage of HMS Blonde detail his observations of birds on the island of Mauke, southern Cook group, on 9 August 1825, nearly 150 years before birds were again collected on the island. These notes establish that the unique type of the "Mysterious Starling" Aplonis mavornata Duller, a valid species previously of unknown origin and now extinct, was one of the three specimens collected on Mauke by Bloxam. The other two, which have not yet been located, if they still exist, were the kingfisher Halcyon tula mauke and the fruit dove Ptilinopus rarotongensis cf. goodwini, the latter otherwise unknown oh Mauke and probably now extinct there. INTRODUCTION Ornithologically, the Cook Islands, in south-central Polynesia, are among the most poorly known archipelagos of the Pacific. The first native land birds known certainly to have been taken in these islands were in a small collection made by Andrew Garrett on Rarotonga, probably in 1869, because the specimens were received by Godeffroy in 1870 (data from specimen labels) and described by Hartlaub & Finsch in 1871. Wiglesworth (1891a: 574) stated that Garrett "spent six months collecting in the Cook Islands of Rarotonga, Atiu, and Aitutaki," but there is no indication that he obtained birds on either of the last two, of which Atiu has an endemic subspecies of kingfisher, Halcyon tuta atiu (Holyoak 1974).

ELDREDGE Pacific Science Association Bishop Museum Honolulu HI 96817 USA email: [email protected] Abstract—For marine biodiversity studies at Guam, note is made of early discoverers to the 1900s and the beginning of scientific investigati- ons through World War II. Specific activities surrounding Acanthaster planci are noted as they led to the development of the University of Guam Marine Laboratory with comments on the Marine Lab’s role in Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas to the present. Former and current faculty, graduate students, and visiting researcher activities are reported. Early Discoverers (1521 – 1790s) Guam was visited by a number of early explorers; however, none of them wrote about the waters surrounding the island. Antonio Pigafetta, Magellan’s chronicler, made very brief remarks related to the people of Guam (Skelton 1969). Five years later, Fray Garcia Jofre de Loaysa retraced Magellan’s route with Andreas Urdaneta who briefly described people and weapons. Urdaneta returned in 1565 with Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, who took possession of the islands for the King of Spain. Urdaneta further reported on the people and their houses erected on stone pillars. Between 1600 and 1625 a number of Dutch expeditions passed through Guam, each adding little information about the islands and their inhabitants. In 1665, the galleon San Damian with Padre Diego Luis de Sanvitores returned to Guam, establishing the first permanent Spanish colony. Padre Sanvitores is remembered for the first study of the Chamorro language. William Dampier first visited in May 1686 and returned with Woodes Rogers in 1710 and upon leaving, took a proa (sailing canoe) with them back to England.
