Since the only previous Mediterranean record of this species was based on a single individual observed in the Tyrrhenian Sea, the present record likely represents an independent introduction that may have occurred through the aquarium trade or via shipping. Two other surgeonfish species, Acanthurus coeruleus Bloch and Schneider, 1801 and Acanthurus monroviae Steindachner, 1876, were previously recorded from the central Mediterranean. While A. coeruleus may have established a population in the Levantine Sea, like A. chirurgus it has only been reported once from Malta (and from the central Mediterranean in general); both A. coeruleus and A. chirurgus are, therefore, considered to be casual species in Maltese waters. In contrast, A. monroviae was reported from several Mediterranean countries including Tunisia and Malta in the central Mediterranean. -

In the summer of 1900, in connection with the investigations in Japan by Professors Jordan and Snyder, a very considerable collection of fishes was made atManila and Cavite, on the island of Luzon, and about iloilo, on the island of Panay, in the Philippine Islands, by Dr. George A. Lung, surgeon in the United States Navy. This collection is the property of Stanford University, but a series of specimens has been presented to the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries and to the U. S. National Museum. The specimens in question are in excellent condition, and the large number of species obtained shows the faithful work of Dr. Lung as collector. I . The following are the new species in the collection, with the numbers borne by the types and cotypes in the Stanford University and U. S. National museums. In cases where specimens are registered in both institutions the first number given is that of Stanford University, the second that of the National Museum. Several introduction pathways contribute to these introduction, including Lessepsian migration via the Suez Canal, accounting for approximately 100 fish species, and intentional or non-intentional aquarium releases, accounting for at least 18 species introductions. In the context of the citizen science project of iSea “Is it alien to you?… Share it”, several citizens are engaged and regularly report observations of alien, rare or unknown marine species. The project aims to monitor the establishment and expansion of alien species in Greece. In this study, we present the first records of two popular high-valued aquarium species, the scissortail sergeant, Abudefduf sexfasciatus and the sohal surgeonfish, Acanthurus sohal, in along the Mediterranean coastline of Greece. The aggressive behaviour of the two species when in captivity, and the absence of records from areas close to the Suez Canal suggest that both observations are the result of aquarium intentional releases, rather than a Lessepsian migration. -

Hortle* and Somphone Phommanivong** We record the first capture from Laos of the diadromous eel-tail catfish Plotosus canius as a single specimen of total length 1111 mm from Phapheng Channel, which is the most easterly anabranch of the Mekong in the Khone Falls system in southern Laos. The capture location is about 2.5 km downstream of Phapheng Waterfall and about 2.1 km upstream of the Cambodian border with Laos. As the location is about 720 km from the sea and at least 500 km upstream of any possible saline influence, this record shows that some large individuals of this diadromous species, which breeds in brackish waters, may penetrate long distances into freshwaters, where they feed on crabs and molluscs.
