11111 Media Monitoring on Urban Development in Namibia Media Monitoring on Urban Development in Namibia is a service provided by Development Workshop Namibia (DWN), a Namibian NGO with a focus on sustainable urban development and poverty reduction. DWN is part of a world-wide network of Development Workshop (DW) organisations with centres in Canada, Angola and France, and offices in Vietnam and Burkino Faso. It was founded in the 1970s by three architect students in the UK and has been funded by non- governmental organisations, private citizens, and national and international development organisations. In Namibia, DWN’s activities focus on urban related research, effective urban planning for the urban poor, solutions to informal settlements, water & sanitation, and projects specifically targeting disadvantaged segments of the urban youth. Through 40 years of engagement on urban issues mainly in Africa and Asia, the DW network of organisations has acquired significant institutional knowledge and capacity and is well integrated in regional and international networks. The Namibian media provide an important source of information on urban development processes in the country, highlighting current events, opportunities and challenges. The media further provide insight into the different views and perceptions of a variety of actors, be it from government, non- government, private sector, and individuals that reside in Namibia’s towns and settlements. It is therefore hoped that DWN’s Media Monitoring service will provide insights into those different views, with potential use for a variety of institutions and decision-makers that work in the urban environment in Namibia. The Media Monitoring service is currently provided on a monthly basis and monitors the following newspapers: The Namibian, Republikein, Namibian Sun, New Era, Windhoek Observer, Confidente, and Informante.

To achieve this aim, four objectives were set: (a) to assess the knowledge of cervical cancer and cervical cancer services among nurses (b) to determine the nurses' attitudes towards the provision of cervical cancer services (c) to assess the practices of nurses towards the provision of services on cervical cancer; and (d) to analyse the association between the key variables with regards to cervical cancer and the provision of its services. A quantitative, descriptive and analytical study, using a self-administered structured questionnaire was completed in 2019. Data on socio-demographic, knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding cervical cancer service provision was collected from nurses that are working at the randomly selected healthcare facilities such as Windhoek Central hospitals, Intermediate Katutura Hospital, Hakahana clinic, Wanaheda clinic, Okuryangava clinic and Katutura Health Centre. • Public Perception of Windhoek's Drinking Water and Its Sustainable
Public Perception of Windhoek’s Drinking Water and its Sustainable Future A detailed analysis of the public perception of water reclamation in Windhoek, Namibia By: Michael Boucher Tayeisha Jackson Isabella Mendoza Kelsey Snyder IQP: ULB-NAM1 Division: 41 PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF WINDHOEK’S DRINKING WATER AND ITS SUSTAINABLE FUTURE A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF WATER RECLAMATION IN WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA AN INTERACTIVE QUALIFYING PROJECT REPORT SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE SPONSORING AGENCY: Department of Infrastructure, Water and Waste Management The City of Windhoek SUBMITTED TO: On-Site Liaison: Ferdi Brinkman, Chief Engineer Project Advisor: Ulrike Brisson, WPI Professor Project Co-advisor: Ingrid Shockey, WPI Professor SUBMITTED BY: ____________________________ Michael Boucher ____________________________ Tayeisha Jackson ____________________________ Isabella Mendoza ____________________________ Kelsey Snyder Abstract Due to ongoing water shortages and a swiftly growing population, the City of Windhoek must assess its water system for future demand. Our goal was to follow up on a previous study to determine the public perception of the treatment process and the water quality. The broader sample portrayed a lack of awareness of this process and its end product. We recommend the City of Windhoek develop educational campaigns that inform its citizens about the water reclamation process and its benefits. i Executive Summary Introduction and Background Namibia is among the most arid countries in southern Africa. Though it receives an average of 360mm of rainfall each year, 83 percent of this water evaporates immediately after rainfall. Another 14 percent goes towards vegetation, and 1 percent supplies the ground water in the region, thus leaving merely 2 percent for surface use.

  • Improving Communication Between the Residents of Katutura and the City of Windhoek
Enhancing Understanding of Utility Services: Improving communication between the residents of Katutura and the City of Windhoek Jo Bridge Brenden Brown Kyle Robichaud Ben Thistle Sponsored by: Desert Research Foundation of Namibia Enhancing Understanding of Utility Services: Improving communication between the residents of Katutura and the City of Windhoek An Interactive Qualifying Project Report Submitted to the Faculty of WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelors of Science by Jo Bridge Brenden Brown Kyle Robichaud Ben Thistle Date: 5 May 2006 Report Submitted to: Dr. Mary Seely, Desert Research Foundation of Namibia Mrs. Anna Matros, Desert Research Foundation of Namibia Professor Chrysanthe Demetry, Worcester Polytechnic Institute Professor Richard Vaz, Worcester Polytechnic Institute Executive Summary Namibia was established as a free and independent country in 1990 after its release from the South African apartheid government; the nation has made significant progress with class integration since this time, but continues to face economic, environmental, and social problems. There continues to be a great disparity between rich and poor, and obstacles still exist between races. In both rural and urban regions of the country, many people live in shacks made from corrugated steel with little access to water, electricity, and basic sanitation. Since Independence, there has been a high number of rural citizens migrating to the capital city of Windhoek, most of whom end up living in shacks in the informal settlements of Katutura. This large influx in population, combined with a lack of job opportunities, has caused the unemployment rate in the Windhoek area to rise to around 30%.
