REGINA, NOV. 12 - Scholarships, bursaries and prizes were presented to more than 30 distinguished students tais afternoon (Nov. 12) at the third annual scholar- ships' awards function of the Faculty of Engineering, Univer- Saskatchewan, Regina Campus. The ceremony was held in the Campion Auditorium. Keynote speaker at the function was G.L. Colborne, deputy minister of the Saskatchewan department of industry and com- merce; he was introduced by Dr. E.B. Tinker. Dean J.B. Mantle, of the Faculty of Engineering, introduced the platform party, and Dr. W.A. Riddell, principal of the University of Saskatchewan in Regina, and Bill Harris, president of the Student Engineering Society, spoke briefly. Presentation of awards followed the keynote address. Brent H. Taylor, of Wawota, receiver the University of Saskatchewan Continuing Scholarship wilch was presented by Dr. Riddell. Minister of Welfare C.P. MacDonald presented Government of Saskatchewan Entrance Scholarships to the following students: Darryl N. V. Butchko, Regina Brien P. Charlton, Regina Donald G. Fleming, Regina Donald N. Holdner, Strasbourg William L. Lazenby, Regina Byron K. Mann, Regina Reinhard H. Rackow, Regina Allan L. Reich, Regina Gerald Tegart, Strasbourg Richard W. Willoughby, Sintaluta Bruce R. Wilson, Estevan The Gordon R. Arnott and Associates Bursary, presented by Mr. Arnott, went to Frederick N. Brehaut, of Weyburn. The B.B. Torchinsky and Associates Ltd. Scholarship was presented by Mr. G. Holoboff, Regina, to John A. Martin, Ituna. Donald L. Myers, Regina, received the R. Yoneda and Associates Ltd, Prize, which was presented by Mr. Yoneda, Regina. The Association of Professional Engineers of Saskatch- ewan, Slide Rule Prize was presented by Dr. R. L. Cheesman, Regina, to Ian R. Roach, Yorkton. Brent H. Taylor, Wawota, received the Association of Professional Engineers of Saskatchewan, First Year Book Prize, which was presented by Dr. R. L. Cheesman. J. Dwight Stregger, Estevan,received the Faculty of Engineering Regina Campus, Slide Rule Prize, which was present- ed by Dr. Hughes.     EDMUND MORRIS AMONG THE SASKATCHEWAN INDIANS AND THE FORT QU'APPELLE MONUMENT By Jean McGill n 1872 the government of Canada appointed Alexander Morris the first Chief Justice of Manitoba. The same year he succeeded A. G. Archibald as Lieu­ I tenant-Governor of Manitoba and the North-West Territories. Archibald had already acted as a commissioner of the federal government in negotiating Treaties Nos. 1 and 2 with the Indians of Manitoba. Morris was com­ missioned in 1873 to carry on negotiations with Indians of the western plains and some Manitoba Indians not present at the first two treaties. By the time Alexander Morris's term of office had expired in 1877 he had negotiated the signing of Treaties No. 3 (North-West Angle), 4 (Fort Qu'Appelle), 5 (Lake Winnipeg), 6 (Forts Carlton and Pitt), and the Revision of Treaties Nos. 1 and 2. Morris later documented the meetings, negotiations, and wording of all of the treaties completed prior to 1900 in a book entitled The Treaties of Canada with the Indians ofManitoba and the North­ west Territories which was published in 1888. He returned to Toronto with his family and later was persuaded to run for office in the Ontario legislature where he represented Toronto for a number of years. Edmund Morris, youngest of a family of eleven, was born two years before the family went to Manitoba. Indian chiefs and headmen in colourful regalia frequently came to call on the Governor and as a child at Government House in Winnipeg, Edmund was exposed to Indian culture for the Indians invariably brought gifts, often for Mrs.

Prominent amongst these is the news that an agreement has been reached to start a Clan Leslie Collection at the University of Guelph Library, thanks in very large part to the energy and effort of William Leslie. Also during the year many Leslies attended many gatherings and met kinsmen they did not know, and renewed old friendships. 2009 promises to be as exciting - with the Homecoming Festival to be held in Edinburgh in July. Advertising on the television has already started, and plans are afoot. When you read this I will be finalising our own plans as the Clan Leslie Charitable Trust and will let you know what we will be doing early next year.
