886_modernekunst_s001-015_start.indd 9 09/05/2019 14.32 Cubism, Chinese Avant-garde and Scathing Satire

Welcome to this summer’s auction of modern art, where the Cubist work ”Bretonne” from 1920 is one of the absolute highlights. The painting was created by the Polish-born Parisian artist Henri Hayden, and it has been owned by the British art collector and furniture manufacturer C.W.F. France. France settled in Denmark before the outbreak of the Second World War, and during the 1950s-1960s he played an important role in promoting Danish furniture art. Hayden’s Cubist period was relatively short, and his paintings within this style are therefore rare on the art market. The offered painting is done with multiple perspectives, and the figure is Cubist in its different pictorial elements – both in and around the figure. The elements dissolve and rhythmically shift as the planes of the image overlap and intertwine with each other. The title ”Bretonne” is a reference to the artist Paul Gauguin, who was one of Hayden’s earliest sources of inspiration in terms of the surface-oriented painting. Hayden spent several summers in Brittany, where Gauguin a couple of decades previously achieved a big breakthrough as a modernist with his depictions of the landscape and local population (cat. no. 1063). Read the whole story behind “Bretonne” on page 72.

As Hayden had done before her, the Chinese artist Xie ”Lalan” Jinglan also left her homeland in favour of the art metropolis of . She arrived in 1948 initially to compose electronic music and study modern dance at the ”Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse”. In the mid- 1950s, however, she turned her attention to the visual arts, and here she transferred the rhythms of music and the movements of dance to the canvas. At this auction, we present her poetic work ”Le Combat était il égal?” from 1967, which, like all her art, sits on the threshold between two cultures and draws on the traditions of one of the world’s oldest civilizations as well as European avant-garde art from the second half of the twentieth century (cat. no. 1070).

”There are devilish splinters in Harald Engman’s magic mirror, but we benefit from immersing ourselves in the views and reflections it offers. Even though it sometimes slightly stings the eyes!” These are the apt words in a small book about the artist and illustrator Harald Engman’s works from the 1930s-40s. Engman’s painting ”Today’s Painters” from 1938 is reproduced in this book, and it is now up for auction. In the painting, we get to experience Engman’s pointed and ima- ginative satire in the form of an apocalyptic and visionary depiction of the world, where he un- folds a sharp criticism of the Nazi regime with Hitler wearing angel wings, a sword and a dim- witted look on his face. The sky is covered by warplanes, and other representatives of society are also roasted, such as the artists with blinkers on and the fat-headed capitalist portrayed as an explosive bomb. In 1939, the work was exhibited in the pedestrian tunnel under the City Hall Square in Copenhagen, but Engman’s social criticism and opposition to Nazism meant that the work was ordered taken down. Engman’s boldness was also the reason why he had to move to Sweden for a number of years. On the other hand, this exile allowed him more freedom to express his merciless satire as an illustrator (cat. no. 1010).

The auction also includes the German art photographer Thomas Ruff, who is part of the prominent Düsseldorf school. In one of his works, he has played with the viewer’s perception of reality in a highly pixelated and blurred beach scene. Additional highlights of the auction include an impres- sive selection of prints made by the French artist Maurice Estève during the 1960s-80s, a painting by Asger Jorn from 1948 and a still life by William Scharff from 1916 (cat. no. 1132, 1027 and 1021).

"The most important period in Engman's artwork oc- curred during the years 1938-45. His opposition to Na- zism resulted in a great number of highly provocative works in response to the Germans’ actions. Engman had his first clash with the Germans in 1939, where he at the initiative of the German envoy was banned from exhibiting the painting “Tidens malere” (Today’s Paint- ers) in the pedestrian tunnel at the City Hall Square. In 1940, German soldiers intervened directly and closed the exhibition “Black Banners”. Engman fled to Sweden in 1943, where many of his anti-Nazi drawings were created. After the war things quieted down, and Eng- man has since been given the nickname "The forbid- den painter"." Quoted from Joan Hauch's biography in Weilbachs Kunstnerleksikon. Rasmussen, Broncestøberi Kbhvn. Green patinated bronze. H. 175 cm. The sculptor Helen Schou has left many lasting influ- ences on history, but she is especially re- membered for “Den Jyske Hingst” (The Jutlandic Stal- lion) in and the equestrian statue of Christian X in Aarhus – both monumental works that stand as proud landmarks in the cityscape.

“Moder og Barn" (Mother and Child), which we here offer for sale, may be known by summer guests at the Bellevue Beach north of Copenhagen, where a version of the sculpture is part of the view towards the Sound.

Unlike Helen Schou's more imposing works, this sculp- ture is a quite unsentimental depiction of a proud, self- aware mother carrying her young child on her arm. The woman stands in a classical contraposto, placing her weight on her left leg, which allows her to rest her arm on the hip and at the same time emphasizing the body's strength. He was, in his earliest years in Paris, engrossed in Gau- guin’s surface-oriented “Synthetism” and the pictur- esque expression of Renoir. But it was especially the constructive element of Paul Cézanne, which from 1912-1914 and onwards had a lasting influence on Hayden and led him in a natural way towards artists such as Pablo Picasso, André Lhote, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger and André Derain. The friendships with the artists Jacques Lipchitz and Juan Gris became cru- cial for Hayden since the latter introduced him to the art dealer Léonce Rosenberg. Hayden signed a contract with Rosenberg in 1915 and thereby became part of the above-mentioned “Galerie de L’Effort Moderne” with artists such as Pablo Picasso, Gino Severini, Jean Metzinger, Henri Matisse and many more.

In 1919, Henri Hayden had a separate exhibition in Henri Hayden (1883-1970). Ill. from the biography by Jean Selz: Léonce Rosenberg’s gallery, and towards the end of the “Hayden”, Editions Pierre Cailler, Geneva 1962. same year he painted what, for posterity, is the main work in his relatively short cubist period, the work “Les Trois Musiciens”*, which in 1920 was exhibited at the “Il fallait être déjà un peu un initié pour se rendre dans ‘Salon des Indépendants’ and is today located at the la paisible Rue de La Baume et monter à ce premier Musée d’Art Moderne at Centre Georges Pompidou étage où Léonce Rosenberg, frère de Paul Rosenberg, in Paris. “You had to be one of the initiated before being al- lowed to enter the quiet Rue de la Baume and go up to the first floor, where Léonce Rosenberg, Paul Rosen- berg’s brother, hid his cubists. They were all there on the shelf, from Braque – the most famous – to Valmier – the least known. It was when I visited them here in their den or sanctuary that I became acquainted with Hayden’s paintings.”

The description comes from the author Jean Selz’ biography of the Polish-born artist Henri Hayden (1883-1970) from 1962, and it conjures up a moment in time from around 1920 of discovering the artist’s works in their original Parisian gallery environment, where they were surrounded by works of the most influential cubist artists of the time.

”By his shaken construction, the articulation of the image planes and the rhythm of the colour surfaces, the canvas is strongly reminiscent of the syncopated rhythms and movements of jazz. When you see it, you think of Paul Claudel’s expression: “The eye listens”.

Already around 1922, Henri Hayden moved away from the dogma of Cubism towards a more direct study of nature, leading to an abrupt break with the art dealer Rosenberg. Contrary to Hayden, his colleagues Braque, Severini and Metzinger either further developed the cubist idiom or returned to it later in their careers. Hayden never went back, which also means that larger cubist oil paintings from Hayden’s hand are quite rare on the art market today.

“Bretonne”, 1920 The work “Bretonne” (1920) has clear compositional similarities to the major contemporary work of Hayden, “Les Trois Musiciens” (1919-20). But where the lat- ter depicts three vertically-oriented figures in a con- densed, fragmented and multi-perspective space, the most obvious difference is of course that “Bretonne” concentrates on one vertical figure in a narrower visual space. The title and motif of “Bretonne” are likely nods to one of Hayden’s greatest and earliest sources of in- spiration in relation to the surface-oriented, contoured and decorative painting style – namely the works of Paul Gauguin: “Breton Girl Spinning”, 1889. France’s success and importance for what has become known as “Danish Modern” was with a popular mod- ern-day expression established through a “disruption”. France combined furniture art with craftsmanship and made an investment in “knock-down furniture” that could be flat-packed and subsequently assembled whereby they became profitable for export. Particular attention should be paid to the relationship with Finn Juhl, for whom France produced the “Japan Chair” and the “Spade Chair” among other designs. Through the years, it was not only Juhl but a large part of Kaare Klint’s students who ended up designing furniture for France, such as Ole Wanscher, Edvard Kindt-Larsen, Grete Jalk, Hvidt & Mølgaard and more.

The dating on the sculpture is also interesting. Unframed. Jean-Pierre Pincemin was one of the leading French artists of his generation. Until the age of 23, he worked as a factory metal turner. He gave up this job to pursue his great passion and urge to create. Hence, Pincemin emerged in the late 1960s as an influential member of the Supports/Surfaces movement, who took an inter- est in materiality and investigating the full spectrum of the pictorial field.

Pincemin left the group in 1974 and returned to the more classical painterly tools of the easel and the paint- brush. Nevertheless, he continued to explore the harmo- ny and contrasts of colour in his work, demonstrating his quest for a geometric organisation determined by chromatic values.

886_modernekunst_s014-204_kunst.indd 125 09/05/2019 14.47 André Butzer is one of Germany´s most relevant con- temporary artists. His works are in high demand on the current market, as he continues to have frequent international coverage in numerous art publications, exhibitions at prestigeous institutions, and rep- resentation in several private and public collections. Much of Butzer’s work considers the radical notion that colour and history are inextricably linked. In a wild fantasizing language with impasto swathes of oil paint he finds his colourful experiences and in- spirations amongst old and modern masters such as Giotto, Tizian, Raphael, Munch and Matisse - as well as pop-cultural references. This type of painting, which the offered work is a characteristic example of, should be seen as part of his “Science-Fiction-Expressionism”, that utilize all manner of references from corporate logos to car- toon figures. At the same time, he compresses to- gether symbols of 20th century cultural, political and technological thought into extremely dense works.

”There is no choice with colour. It’s all about colour or it’s nothing. Nothing is not so good.” Katrina Kufer interview with André Butzer, Buro 24/7, 2011.

886_modernekunst_s014-204_kunst.indd 143 09/05/2019 14.50 Two Photographs by Thomas Ruff

The German photographer Thomas Ruff is one of the most important European contemporary photogra- phers to emerge at the end of the 20th century. His works are rooted in the documentary tradition of the Düsseldorf School of photography founded by Bernd and Hilla Becher, known for its detached, objective gaze. He is part of the first and most influential gener- ation of students from this school, which counts nota- ble artists such as Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth and Candida Höfer.

Since his first series “Interieurs” appeared in 1979, Thomas Ruff took on new approaches to photography and has since then constantly challenged the conven- tions of the medium and the documentary style his work sprung from. Essentially his works are photos on photography. And with each new series of works, he has explored the medium, its genres, motifs and tech- The work from the series “Substrat”, presented on the niques, with a methodical approach: opposite page, is an example of this new approach to photography. It is a form of appropriation art more “His work contains neither narrative nor anecdotal than a traditional photograph. 886_modernekunst_s240-256-slut.indd 242 09/05/2019 15.23 PRINS HENRIKS SAMLING PÅ AUKTION
