President's Message - June 2007

Kurt Fischer

It is Monday... and I am back to work after a great Redwood Region weekend. Saturday had another great breakfast run to the Dillon Beach Cafe and Sunday it was the corral at Infineon Raceway for the Wine Country Classics Vintage races. Look for articles on each event is this issue. What a weekend!

Many thanks to all the Redwood Region volunteers over this weekend and you have stepped up the plate. Keep it up.... the members make the organization.. this is your club!

Our next official event is Gary Bayless' Father's Day Tour to the Redwood Valley for a day of wine tasting on Sunday, June 17th, to sample the wares of 13 different wineries known for their great reds! The cost is $25.00 per glass for all the wineries and they will be serving food too. Join Gary and RSVP to him at [email protected]

Our next autocross is on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at the beloved Santa Rosa Airport site and based on our past attendance...look for another great time learning car control at its ultimate.

Eighteen primary members and their significant others for a total of 36 people are scheduled to go the Porsche Parade from the Redwood Region during the first week of July. A great showing from our Region and our Zone 7 is the second largest contingency at the annual Parade to be held in San Diego with the main dinner being served on the Aircraft Carrier Midway! A great time will be had by all if this is anything like last year's Parade in Portland! Look for a report in the July issue of the der Riesenbaum!

July's activities after the Porsche Parade include an autocross on July 14th and the not to be missed...Greg Chambers' fantastic tour of artisan wineries on July 28th. Last year 74 of us were on Greg's tour in 100+ degree heat... WOW... the heat was too much, but the great wines made up for that!

Ok... I think I've covered it all. Be safe out there... enjoy our great Redwood Region roads...keep the shiny side up and remember the "flash"! Want me? Need me? Here I [email protected].

Editor's Corner

Bill Walters

I feel much better with this June issue. The format has taken hold, advertisers and sponsors are in place, photos rock, and the writing is superb...! We are on our way into the future and we can now look forward to what our club brings to you. You were surprisingly supportive in my first attempt at this last month and it was very much appreciated. I also want to personally thank Jerry Gladstone and Kurt Fischer for their help and recognition of what goes into producing this piece. My bruises have almost faded.

Hard copies of this electronic version will be printed, folded, taped, stamped and posted to members so requesting, within a week of the electronic delivery. Last month's May issue will be included, so you should be receiving two issues simultaneously by second week of June.

Now, for our reading pleasure, Kurt has supplied us with yet another outstanding piece on another rare find, the 1901 Lohner- Porsche. Good read. We have articles on our three wineries tour of May 19th, the Dillon Beach Breakfast Run, Diablo Region's Wash and Shine, our Membership Report, a new thing called, "This Just In"... and...the Classifieds! Speaking of classified's, how come no one called me about my 904 ad? Just seeing if you're paying attention...

Also! Photography support is paramount in this issue with stunning shots from John and Kaye Jackson and Jerry Gladstone. They have really stepped it up and make this job a lot easier; now the problem is selecting the ones to publish as there are so many from which to select! See if you're in this issue...

It's really great to have all of you that attended these events come out and enjoy the venues, our gracious hosts and hostesses, the food and wines, the roads and scenery and of course your . From 356 to GT-3, they all bring us smiles and a pleasant rush.

Thanks for your support,

Ed.

Far Niente Winery Tour May 19th

Bill Walters

Far Niente, Eagle and Rose Estate and Paradise Ridge Wineries all in the same day! David Bunch co-ordinated and planned a very adventuresome tour of three fabulous wineries and a spectacular, if not warm, Northern California Saturday.

David had us gather at 8 am at Kal's Kaffe Mocha near the Sonoma County Airport on a short sleeve kind of morning. Fifty of us signed up early to get into this one and we came in with 28 cars. New member Bruce Wint made his first event driving his black '06 911S cabriolet; nice showing.

David Bunch giving instructions, Tim Hensel pic.

OK. Let's get going. David led us on a meandering drive southeast on down to Sonoma Hwy, passed Annadel State park, out Trinity Road to Acacia Lane which takes us into Far Niente winery founded in 1885, and translates into, "without a care".

This place is cool with a nice long driveway to line the cars and when inside we were greeted by Bruce and Melanie Mooers (red '89 speedster..) who gave us a little history of the place and took us around to see the caves and barrel storage. They use the great french oak barrels with a willow tie and we had some wine tasting of their 2004 Cabernet and a 2001 Sauvignon, both supremely tasty.

Far Niente's caves were dug out in 1980, and at the time were the first to be constructed in the US since the turn of the century, spawning a new industry in California wine country. The cave contain around 2,500 oak barrels. Incidently, the winery boasts what is thought to be California's oldest, intact bottle of wine, a Muscat, from 1886. There are also 13 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens to take in while visiting.

Next, wander over to the Carriage House which featured about 14 cars, a couple of boats and maybe four BMW motorcycles. When I say cars, I mean vintage eye-catchers...a red Speedster, a red Alfa Giulietta, a red Daytona, a blue XKE and a 500 Superfast, a one-off 340 America from 1951...you get the idea. Mouth watering. This fleet was assembled by the late Gil Nickel, who revived Far Niente in 1979 and who was a race driver as well. These cars don't just sit, they are all driven around the area on nice days.

Bruce had us get back and focus on the wines once again inside the lobby where we could taste again and purchase some of these very fine wines.

The cars, the winery, Bruce Mooers and audience and a cute little speedster. Jerry Gladstone pics.

Time to go. Headed out behind David up St. Helena Highway, the Silverado Trail and up and out to Chiles and Pope Valley Roads. Nice drive on some gentle twisty roads past streches of green-vined vineyards with crows flying overhead chased by teams of songbirds. As we have a couple of intersections to transverse, a car or truck or two will invade our parade. Seems a flatbed stacked with wooden folding chairs was one such vehicle and sure enough he lost his load in front of half our line.

Anyway, we all made it to the Eagle and Rose Estate located in Pope Valley where we were greeted by founder, Norman Alumbaugh and winemaker Andrew Kahn. (Founded in 1981, Norman's wife Evonne, came up with the name from the eagles soaring overhead) These nice gents took us through some nice tastings of Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Sangiovse and Merlot from their vineyard. After tasting, many of us purchased wines to accompany our picnic lunches. There were several tables with umbrellas surrounding the tasting room were we could have lunch and converse with friends.

Afterwards, Norman took us into the caves where the cool temperatures keep the barrels cool and allowed us to cool down as well from the warm outside temps. Norman was very engaging answering many questions from our inquisitive group. Thanks go to Norman and his staff.

Norman Alumbaugh, founder.

Done here...on to Paradise Ridge Winery in Santa Rosa. Dave then took us on a fine run headed back west-south on Spring Mountain Road and onto Calistoga Road to Fountaingrove Parkway that led us to the winery. Paradise Ridge is known for it's outdoor sculptures which are displayed along the drive up to the winery and exhibits are grouped around the grove.

Once parked, we ambled up to the Vineroom tasting room greeted by winemaker Dan Barwick, who was extreemly friendly and helpful, serving up glasses of Blanc de Blanc sparkling wine, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet and Zinfandel wine samples. Inside you can view exhibits of the history of winemaker Kanaye Nagasawa and the Fountaingrove area. Most of us wandered out to the mahogany veranda and terrace that overlooks the Russian River Valley and it's great expanse. Lovely place. Thanks to the Byck family and staff.

Whew. That was a full day of California country road touring, wine sampling and socializing. These are truly wonderous events for you to join us. Thanks again to David for putting all of this together, the wineries and staffs, and to all of you who made the trip.

Wash and Shine - Diablo Style

Bill Walters

Over the Memorial Day holiday, three of us Redwoodies, (Kurt Fischer, Lynn Roberts and I) went to a look-see at Diablo Region's Wash and Shine held that Saturday at Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek. There was also the need to get out of the coastal fog and seek some sunshine.

The event was actually held in one of the park's parking lots near the park's entry. It was still a little cool and breezy at 10 am when the judging of the 30 entrants began. There was a decent range from two 356's all the way to new Caymans and a GT-3. One of the 356's was a 1959 convertible D. There are about 450 of these cars left; they replaced the speedster making the car a little more practical with a better top and wind-up windows. The "D" stood for Drauz, the body maker for the new convertible. The other one was a pretty grey '62 coupe with 50K plus original miles! Nice showing.

On display was a white Cayman GT Sport, which has a more agressive body package among other treatments. Greg Adams sported his Meteor Grey Cayman that he won from the 2006 PCA raffle drawing. There were also some very nice and very clean 70's 911's including two 2.4 targas, and one pretty white 914. Not bad for a small group.

Coffee, donuts, and an array of goodies were available from hosts Maureen Torres and Ingred French. Larry Sharp was out as one of the judges with Diablo president, Ted French as well.

We didn't stick around long enough to see the class winners, but I think everyone who participated went home with a treat. Cool way to spend a Saturday morning.

Breakfast Run to Dillon Beach June 2nd

Bill Walters

The Group Shot, Dillon Beach. John Jackson pic.

Nice long day we had, a tad breezy, but overall it was hard not to enjoy a day so fine.

I received 20 conformation e-mails totaling 31 people for one our favorite venues, The Cafe at Dillon Beach. All 31 of you showed up at the Novato IHOP which is amazing in itself and in addition, we had 5 other folks show up as well. Not bad at all; congratulate yourselves on that one.

Admittedly, it was little cool and we had the low lying coastal fog upon arrival in Novato. The gathering was quick to grow so we had a lot of time to chat and meet friends, look at the cars, buy coffee... Marie Duarte brought her friend Christie along, and we had newbies Barry and Joene Kelly and Hakki Etem brought along his son, Mark. Hope you guys had fun.

Bob Hall was our leader again as he enjoys it so. He took us out his favorite way, out San Marin Drive to Novato Blvd. and on out to Hicks Valley and Marshall-Petaluma Roads. Here you will see some of the best scenery in that region. The hills are now covered with burnt, golden grasses; not much green left except for the oaks and firs. If you dared look off the road, you would see deer up the hills shadowed by gliding turkey vultures, groups of wild turkey in the shadows of trees, a red-tailed hawk and your usual livestock of Holstein, some sheep and some horses. Oh, and lots of wildflowers flanking the roads to color things up a bit.

John and Kay Jackson had left ahead of the party to stake out positions by Miller Creek and further out on Hwy 1, to get some pics. of us all zooming by and waving. Some of their work is displayed below. Nice work you two...

Holly Brink, hands on wheel... John and Kaye Jackson pic.

We proceeded swiftly behind Bob traveling north on that cool stretch of Shoreline Highway (1), beside Tomales Bay that snakes around gently, flat, with just enough speed to make it thrilling. It is almost as if were made exclusively for us to lay it out. That puts you right in Tomales, turn west, and head down about 3 miles into Dillon. The Cafe is right there on your right; pull into the lot, lights off and enter our own back room with a view of the Ocean.

We had a smattering of 2, 4 or 6 person table combinations to choose from. It always amazes me that you guys can enter a venue like this, find a table with friends or strangers or first timers and the conversation never stops. You're all just going a mile a minute. Speaks volumes about our constitutions. Breakfast was tasty, staff help was magnificent as usual, like bees on flowers, and the event was a blast.

On outside for a big group shot with the typical kidding, jabbing and bad jokes. If you like this sort of thing, come out and join us, the year is half over. We have some wine tours remaining and some good ones I may add. These are nice social outings, outdoors, and comfortable settings for meeting club members. See you there. And bring your cars...

Redwood Region Porsche Corral

Kurt Fischer

Sunday dawns in the fog for our annual Porsche corral for the Wine Country Classics vintage race at Infineon Raceway. I arrive at 7:15 AM to find Bill Walters and Michael Dufort already there in layers of clothing hoping the fog will clear.

David Bunch is there at 8:00AM in his Porsche Support Vehicle (PSV) with all the tents and chairs. By that time a number of RR members had also driven up on the grassy knoll, also known as Turn 2, and tents were popped up along with icing down many bottles of water... we are ready for the sun and fine vintage races!

Colonel Mike Klunk, our ace parking lot attendant, pulls up in his beautiful Guards Red 993 coupe: we are now ready for the onslaught of Porsches! Between 8:30 AM until 12:00 noon, we park about 100 cars. Everything from a '58 356 roadster to a brand new 911 GT3 RS... you name the Porsche and it was there!

(We totaled 12-356's, mostly convertibles. Included: a burgundy '61 with a D'Ieteren body. There were only 249 made by this coach builder known as a T-6. D'Ieteren, founded in Bruxelles, originally a coach builder is still in existance, made bodies for AND Studebaker. Duncan Thomson brought out his beautiful Bali Blue '63 coupe, Reutter body, folks were gawking over Walt Sikes' silver '65 T-56 and you couldn't help being captivated by Don Durant's German Racing Green '65 SC, Karmann body. Wow, what a group. Ed.)

El Sol finally made its appearance about 10:00 AM and the layers of clothing were stripped off...it was shaping out to be a fine day for races, the weather is cooperating!

Some of our members were there on Saturday and knew the layout of the paddock area. Steve and Wendy Vest, dual members from the Diablo Region took me on a personal tour of the Copia Wine Pavilion, telling me the superlative wines being poured and the best food being served. The Copia Wine Pavilion really showcases the best of Sonoma County... and you did know our other name is the RedWine Region?

Back up on the hill after lunch hour is over and the races begin in earnest. Every thing from a 1914 Model T with a riding mechanic to the thundering Can AM cars of the early 70's sliced and diced in 10 lap races on the famous 2.3 mile Infineon Raceway.

These vintage races bring out the greatest cars; literally millions of dollars on the track and is a sight to behold!

The last races of the day are the Can AM cars and the wind kicks up and the fog starts to roll back in; the layers of clothing are coming back on... the day is complete!

Again, thanks to all the Redwood Region members that assisted inparking cars, setting up the tents, the selling of the goodie store items and the general camaraderie that these car corrals offer. I see some of the other Region members only once a year at these fine races! They are not to be missed!

Join us for our next Porsche corral on August 25-26, 2007 for the Grand AM and IRL races at Infineon Raceway... again great racing and the fellowship of the Porsche drivers!

Got Wing?

Wings of all sizes and shapes! 1901 Lohner-Porsche - the First Hybrid!

Kurt Fischer

Want green cars? Dying for that 1st Hybrid Porsche? I am in the Way Back Machine with Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman zooming all the way back to 1898 and lo and behold...who do I find, but in the employ of one Jacob Lohner of Austria, owner of the Lohner Carriage Company.

Herr Lohner, a carriage builder to kings and queens of the time wants to see what this "horseless" carriage thing that everyone is talking about! So, in 1898, he hires Ferdinand, whose engineering background was received in his father's mechanical shop during the day and attending night classes at the Imperial Technical School in Liberec, Czechoslovakia. Porsche had previously worked for Bela Egger Electrical Company for the past 5 years and developed the electric hub motor.

With Porsche's fertile mind and Lohner's coach works, the first design was completed in 1898 and was called the "System Lohner-Porsche". It used an internal combustion engine to power a generator that charged 3960 pounds of lead-acid batteries that in turn powered Porsche's hub motors with an astonishing 83% efficiency directly to the powered wheels.

The first prototype was front wheel powered only but Porsche saw the light and said...we can do 4 wheel drive and as history shows...the first 4 wheel drive vehicle!

Along comes Englishman, E.W. Hart and says...I want one of those for the 1900 Paris World Exhibition, the premier car show of the era. It was entered under the name of "Toujours-Contente" that means "always satisfies" for our non French speaking members. And we thought car names are strange today! Chili peppers and small crocodilians fit right in now!

Mr. Hart had this need for speed when he ordered this car but with the massive battery pack it was a bit slow for hillclimbs. In 1901, Porsche redesigned it to allow the generator to power the driving wheels directly with a much smaller battery pack. Dr. Porsche drove the new car (front wheel drive only) in the 1902 Exelberg Rally (Austrian hillclimb) and won, with a blazing speed of 35mph, quite fast for cars in that era. Porsche's history and passion for hillclimbs begins!

One of the pictures included here shows Dr. Porsche at the wheel with E. W. Hart riding shotgun in some unknown location. The other picture is from the Vienna Technical Museum showing one of the 300 Lohner-Porsches build between 1900 and 1906. There were all kinds of variations built, most of them were 2 wheel drives with some trucks and buses and even fire engines in the mix.

Porsche received the Austrian Poetting prize in 1905 as Austria's best automotive engineer for this work of art while he was in the Austrian Army as the chauffeur to Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, but luckily a decade before that fateful day in 1914 and the Great War. Poor Dr. Porsche was always embroiled in wars and touched the leaders of the time!

Finally Mr. Peabody lets me out of the Way Back Machine and I am back in the 21st century thinking of Porsches to come on the horizon. With the new electric Tesla boasting of speeds to match the current 911 Turbo, can Porsche be far behind in producing a totally green electric car? One that we gas guzzling, power hungry with a need for unbelievable handling car guys and girls march down to our local dealers with checkbook in hand?

Perhaps the words...911 "E" will have a new meaning. History is bound to repeat itself. Time will tell

Board Meeting Minutes

Jerry Gladstone

May 29, 2007, Mary & Rob Neidel's Home, Petaluma

President Kurt Fischer called the meeting to order at 7:47 pm after we enjoyed a mesquite barbequed chicken dinner wonderfully prepared by the Neidels.

Attendees: President Kurt Fischer, Vice President & der Riesenbaum Editor Bill Walters, Treasurer Lynn Roberts, Secretary Jerry Gladstone, Social Chair Mary Neidel, Webmaster Rob Neidel and Concours Chair James Heisey.

Minutes: The minutes of previous two meetings were approved as submitted.

President's Report: Upcoming events include the Breakfast Run to the Dillon Beach Café on Saturday, June 2; the Porsche Corral on the grass at the top of turn 2 at Infineon Raceway for the Wine Country Classic; and the Gary Bayless led Father's Day Tour on Sunday, June 17 with a $25 per glass fee for tasting at all the Redwood Valley wineries. The "special" winery tour of May 19 featuring the Far Niente, Eagle and Rose, and Paradise Ridge wineries was beyond outstanding. The Far Niente people have invited us to their other winery - Nickel & Nickel. The Redwood Region Zone 7 autocross was a huge success with 86 drivers on Saturday and 55 on Sunday. A total of 1626 runs were logged and 216 bottles of water were consumed! There will be a Pre-Parade Party for all Parade-goers. Mary & Rob Neidel will host with the date to be chosen soon (probably June 24). A "convoy" to Parade will leave on Saturday, June 30 leaving enough time to attend the 6:00 pm Redwood Region pool party at the hotel.

Vice President's Report: Kurt, Lynn and Bill attended the Diablo wash and shine in Walnut Creek on May 27. About 30 cars were entered for the parking lot based event. A complete run down will be in the next der Riesenbaum. The Bruce Ross Classic Car Show for pre-70s cars will be held in Tiburon on June 16 from 11 am to 4 pm. Porsche is the featured marque. Admission is free to the public and $30 for entrants. Bill will show his 1965 911.

Treasurer's Report: Net income for April was $1302.73 bringing total assets to $17,060.70. Income from the autocross was $4255 and the largest expenditure was for the der Riesenbaum - $1479.09.

Membership Report: The April membership report was published in the last der Riesenbaum, the May report will be available the first week in June. der Riesenbaum Editor's Report: Bill, Kurt and Jerry met at Jerry's house to work on the Constant Contact-based newsletter. The CC application is quite buggy and requires a lot of trial and error. Bill will talk to the CC people this week to get some workarounds for the problem areas.

Webmaster's Report: The website is up to date. A .pdf version of the electronic der Riesenbaum will be posted on the website immediately upon publication. The $80 fee for the Calendar Whiz was received. Rob may revise the website layout soon.

Autocross Director's Report: The next autocross will be on June 23.

Concours Chairman's Report: We need to find sponsors to provide two cases of wine for the Ledson Concours awards. We must purchase only Ledson wine at $300 per case. After a discussion on whether the Ledson venue will be big enough it was noted that attendance is off at Zone 7 Concours this year. We are on Ledson's calendar.

Goodie Store: No report.

Advertising Director's Report: Whitman's has promised to pay their back bill. Bill needs advertisers' ad copy in .jpg for the electronic newsletter. Bob is sending out invoices for ads in the e-dR at the new flat rate of $200 per year.

Social Chairman's Report: Mary reviewed a number of ideas for a charity event including tying an event to the Ledson Concours, an event at Abode Road Winery, an "autocross your other car" event, and a gimmick rally. No decisions were made.

CASA: No report.

New Business: Rob has continued fundamental work on a possible Redwood Region hosted Porsche Parade in 2010 - an update was presented.

Holiday Party Report: After searching all the reasonable venues in the Santa Rosa area it was found that the only "affordable" holiday party location is the Flamingo.
