Water samples were analyzed for physico-chemical parameters by following standard methods (APHA 1985) and the results showed their variations as follows: pH 7.3-7.8,Temperature 26.7-28.20C, Electrical Conductivity 392-514 µ mho ,Total suspended solids 118-148 mg/l, Total dissolved solids 241-285 mg/l, Alkalinity 27.3-42 mg/l, Total Hardness 64.63-114.06 mg/l, Calcium 24.6-32 mg/l, Magnesium 9.72-13.8 mg/l, Dissolved Oxygen 4.6-5.3 mg/l, Biochemical oxygen demand 1.1-3.39 mg/l, Chemical oxygen demand 53-147 mg/l, Nitrates 0.4-1.06 mg/l, Phosphates 0.86-2.4 mg/l, Sulphates 113-143 mg/l, Chlorides 26.32-36.63 mg/l, Iron 0.224-0.464 mg/l, Chromium 0.008-0.016 mg/l. The analyzedphysico-chemical parameters were almost not exceeded the maximum permissible limit of Indian standards (IS: 10500). The water quality at Rajghat conforms to class-C inland surface water.

Autonomous College, Balasore, Orissa. Abstract- After the conquest of Orissa in 1803, East India Company did not take any steps to development of ports. Orissa had long coast line and dotted with several ports. In nineteenth century, road were not developed. Railway was not extended to Orissa. Canals for communication purposes were developed after 1866. When famine came in 1866, relief materials were not transported to the interior of the country. In this famine one third of her population were killed because of food. So the Famine Commission of 1866, recommended for development of ports. These ports were worked as the channel of communication without side world. The isolation of Orissa came to end. Gradually maritime transaction increased and economy of Orissa was integrated with the world economy. Abstract: Odisha being situated on the coast of Bay of Bengal, through the ages has played a significant role in the maritime history of India. During the ancient period, it had extensive maritime trade contacts with many foreign countries such as Africa, Sri Lanka, China, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Java, Sumatra, Bali, Borneo etc. Kalidas in his work Raghuvamsha has described the king of Odisha as Mahodadhipati (the Lord of the Sea). The rituals and festivals like Khudurukuni Osha, Kartika Purnima Boita Bandana Utsava, etc., which are being celebrated in modern Odisha are the reminiscent of its past maritime glory. The representation of a giraffe on the Sun temple at Konarka (c.13th century CE) refers to the trade contact of early medieval Odisha with Africa. Like ancient period, maritime activities also constitute a significant chapter of colonial Odisha. The conducive geographical location of Odihsa and its opulence, which had plentiful raw materials deeply attracted the Europeans like the Portuguese, the Dutch, the English and the French to establish their settlements along the coast of Odisha. In the present paper, an endeavour has been made to trace out and analyze the maritime activities, ports and port towns of Odisha during the nineteenth century.
