It’s election time again and the call is out to those who would like to further serve our fine organization. With the many new faces, the unit would greatly appreciate some new blood to step up and help lead with their fresh ideas and skills. Also, there are many of you, who have already served with other volunteer organizations, that could bring invaluable experi- ence to the table. Please, see page 3 for further details on the election and nominations for office.

Fort Lauderdale is just around the corner and as usual, many of you will be interested in going on the Ships YOU ARE WANTED... Tours at Port Everglades. This year they are expecting 5 ships and a submarine, and the only way to register for Ships Tours is online at the Broward Navy Days web site address at: http://browardnavydaysinc.org/ship-tours-for-fleet-week-2012-please-read-and-sign-up- below For more information please see our Fleet Week article on page 4.

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to come out to the Memorial Mass on February 18th to pay their last respects to our Founding Commandant, Bob Powers, and to those who sent donations and cards, as well. A special thanks goes out to Bob’s daughter Anne Marie, along with PC Bart Reno and VSO Vito Rao for their efforts to help Bob and his family in their time of need. From the fine ceremony at the Church to the military honors rendered at the grave, everything was perfect, and would have made the old man proud. RIP Bob!

At our meeting on February 16th, with her family in attendance, we presented Britnney with a $500 bookstore scholarship.

Also, along with the Flag, came a beautiful certificate signed by the Company CO and 1st Sgt.. Thank you All again for your thoughtfulness and service to our Country and the Corps.

Let it be known that accompanying American Flag was flown in the face of the enemy, aboard Combat Outpost Detroit, in Marajah, the Helmand province of Afghanistan, on 16 November 2011, in honor of Marine Corps League Intracoastal Detachment. “The best way to honor those Americans who perished during the attack on our nation and our way of life on Sep- tember 11, 2001, is to go where our nation sends us in the war against terror, and bring to justice those responsible” The American people can be assured that the Marines and sailors of India company, 3rd Battalion Sixth Marines, are committed to doing just that!

“Fleet Week 2012-Port Everglades, presented by HUMANA MILITARY HEALTHCARE SERVICES”, will take place April 25 – April 30, 2012. Meeting was called to Order by Commandant Scott Vulpis at 19:40 hrs. Opening Ceremony: Acting Sgt. at Arms Ed O’Donnell posted the colors and led the Detachment in the Pledge of Allegiance, and then declared the meeting open for official business. Acting Chaplain Jim DuVall read the Opening Prayer. Roll Call: Elected Officers present: Cmdt Scott Vulpis, SVC Scott Egan, JPC Marty Winston and Past Commandant Ed Johnson. Guests: Our guest for the evening was Britney Kramer and the MCL Auxiliary Unit 1058. Applications For Membership: Marine Sam Biondo. Minutes of Previous Meeting: Copies of Minutes from the members meeting on January 16th, 2012 were passed around for the members review. A motion was made by PC Bart Reno to accept the minutes as presented and was seconded by JPC Ed Johnson and carried to a unanimous vote, none opposed. Paymaster Report: Copies of the Paymaster Report were posted for the members review. A motion was made by Bart Reno to accept the report as presented and was seconded by Tom Depretoro and carried to a unanimous vote, none opposed. Report of any Members or Family sick or in distress: Although, Gene Bredeck was present at the meeting, Cmdt.Vulpis reported that he was recently in the hospital during the time of the Isle RV Show and the day after he was released, he came out to volunteer for the event. Cmdt Vulpis also mentioned that Marine Bill Amos was still recovering from a stroke and Pat Doughtery was out with the flu. Report of Officers: VSO Vito Rao wanted to inform everyone who was seeking or is currently enrolled in VA Healthcare about the importance of signing up at My HealtheVet.com website where there are many advantages, such as safely collecting data from VA hospital records and filling prescriptions. Furthermore, Veterans can now exchange messages with doctors, nurses, clinicians, and other members of their health care team through Secure Messaging. VSO Rao also advised us that the new VA budget request is topping 140 billion dollars, projected through 2015. During this period the VA plans to increase women’s veterans resources by improving access to service and building treatment facilities specific to their needs. Additionally, they have considered additional funding for the high number of troops returning from deployments that have suffered injuries from IED incidents and PTSD, as well. They now are waiting for Congress to approve the proposed budget. Awards: Cmdt. Vulpis presented our guest, Brittney Kramer with a $500 bookstore scholarship and certificate from the Ted Bolender Scholarship Program. Also, he thanked everyone again for their support in helping to get the program off the ground and stated that we were looking forward to presenting scholarships on a regular basis for the Fall semester of each year. Old Business: Ted Bolender Scholarship Fall Semester Packet: Cmdt Vulpis announced that the Detachment 2011 Fall Semester scholarship packet had been released and copies were available up front, plus the rules and application could also be found in the February Scuttlebutt Newsletter and email inboxes. Detachment Exhibit at Isle Casino & Racing RV Show (January 27, 28, & 29, 2012): Cmdt. Vulpis reminded the Detachment that it had completed it’s duties at the Isle Casino and RV Show and collected enough donations to send $725.00 to the Injured Warriors Fund of Florida, LLC. He again thanked all of the volunteers who came out and participated at the Detachment exhibit, and noted that SVC Scott Egan kindly made the embroidered EGA watch caps as our gift/prizing product. Additionally, he again thanked Marine Don Justis for wearing his Dress Blues on the last day, as it made for a great attraction and helped us to collect over $460.00 on that day alone. Birthday Ball Committee Formation: Cmdt Vulpis reminded everyone that a Birthday Ball committee was being formed by Chairman Bob Coleman and would need 4 or 5 individuals to join and help out out with various categories. He also talked about Chairman Coleman’s venue selection of Gulluppi’s on the Green in Pompano, which has nice facilities with views, and good food that has been priced very well, allowing us to pass on a lower ticket rate to our members. Gun Range Meet: Cmdt Vulpis passed on information from Dario Avelo of the Bruce Carter Detachment, inviting MCL members to participate in a monthly shooting meet at the Trail Glades Sport Shooting Range in Miami. He also said that he was glad to hear that another Detachment in the District was promoting a shooting program, which could possibly lead to some organized inter-League competition. Additionally, he reminded everyone that the Detachment would be meeting for an hour of recreational shooting at the National Armory Gun Range, in Pompano, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 3rd, 2012. New Business Department of Florida Scholarship Fund: Cmdt. Vulpis wanted to express the need to support the Department of Florida Scholarship Fund, and reminded everyone that they could find the application for the Department’s program at mclfl.org Furthermore, the Detachment Trustees agreed to donate $100 dollars to the fund, for now. District 10 Meeting : Cmdt Vulpis announced that the A.A. Vandergrift Detachment was sponsoring the next District 10 meeting on Saturday March 17th at the Elks Lodge #1352, at 6188 Belvedere Rd., WPB. SVC Scott Egan said he plans to attend the meeting. Pound #192: Pound Leader Ed Johnson was given the floor to speak about the MCL’s Military Order of Devil Dogs, explaining their origin and mission. He also read the history of the title “Devil Dog ”, from a story of the . Additionally, he reminded everyone that the Pound #192 meets on every fourth (4th) Thursday at 7;30 p.m. at the American Legion #142, in Pompano. PL Johnson also took the time to talk about Chase Bank and their work with the Military Warriors program to donate 100% mortgage-free homes to the families of wounded veterans. Chase has promised to provide 1,000 mortgage-free homes to veterans in need over the next five years through its nonprofit partners. Last month they gave a mortgage free house in Orlando to a wounded Marine. He also talked about JP Morgan Chase and a number of leading U.S. companies launched the 100,000 Jobs Mission in March 2011 with a goal of hiring 100,000 transitioning service members and military veterans by 2020. Bob Powers Memorial Mass: Cmdt. Vulpis reminded everyone of the dates and times, for the upcoming Family Visitation on Friday February 17th, 2012 and Memorial Mass on Saturday, the 18th. Furthermore he commented that the Detachment would perform the Brief Order of Deceased Marines ritual at the Memorial Mass and called for a Semi Formal dress code with Red Blazer uniforms or Church Clothes. Furthermore, Bob’s family request’s, rather than send flowers, please make memorial donations to the Intracoastal Det. “B” wounded troops account. Open Agenda Thanks to PC Bart Reno, Cmdt. Vulpis presented the members with an American Flag that was given to the Detachment by Marine Corporal Steve Sess, and was flown over Combat Outpost Detroit, in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. Marine Marty Winston wanted to inform everyone about the Aventura Trade Council is having a “Desktop” event on March 13th, 2012 where they are supporting returning troops with job opportunities. Cmdt. Vulpis asked for anyone with email that would like to discontinue their mail-out newsletter to please let him know, as this would help to reduce our cost’s on printing and mailing. Marine John Gullman and Bart Reno raised thier hands, saying they no longer need a paper delivery. Marine John Gullman wanted to pass on that he was invited by the Red Cross to attend an Open House in Fort Lauderdale that was centered around hiring returning vets and that his company , PNC Bank, was also very interested in helping returning and wounded vets. Marine George Rafajko wanted to inform us about the upcoming Fleet Week on April 25th-30th, where the American Legion #142 was scheduled to host a free dinner and party for crew member’s off of the USS San Jacinto, on Sat April 28th. He also spoke about Ship Tours and that he would send around a list for people to sign up, at the next meeting. Marine Jose Garcia wanted to inform everyone about the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund and advised Brittney Kramer to go to their website, because his son was able to win a $5000 Scholarship award. 50/50: Marine Gene Bredeck was the winner of $52.00 which he graciously donated back to the Detachment Scholarship fund and the $51.00 went to the Detachment operating account for a total collection of $103.00 for the evening. Closing Ceremony: Being there was no further business, Acting Sgt at Arms, Ed O’Donnell conducted the closing ceremony and Acting Chaplin, Jim DuVall followed with the closing evocation. Acting Sgt at Arms, Ed O’Donnell announced the next meeting will be on, Thursday March 15th, 2012 at this same time and location.
